Republicans behave as if they do not expect the 2018 elections to be free and fair, which is a horrifically reasonable assumption given the acceleration of voter suppression after the 2013 partial repeal of the Voting Rights Act, the appointment of civil rights antagonist Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, Trump's rhetoric about "illegal" votes in minority-heavy California, widespread gerrymandering, and the ongoing threat of Russian interference with possible Trump staffer collusion, among other factors. When representatives flaunt their disregard for public will this blatantly, they insinuate that public will is irrelevant. It's a classic authoritarian tell: They see their political dominance as a lock.

I see three options that explain the actions of the GOP right now...

1. As above, they do not plan to hold free or fair elections
2. They realise it is too late to repair their reputation, so moderate republicans have gone into a lot of despair leaving the extreme right to push through as much as possible before the next elections
3. They are genuinely so delusional that moderates believe they can turn this around and the extreme right believe that everyone will recognise their rightness and wisdom in the end.

I was listening to a woman on R4 this morning talking about NK. The entire interview can be summed up as "there is no solution, we're all fucked". It was not a great start to my day to be honest.

Now, if Trump was to end sanctions, send aid to NK, and invite KJU to Washington, that would really throw everything on their backs.

I suspect it would mostly upset Putin and the Chinese.

Otherwise, it looks like the US would be better off trying to sabotage NK in covert operations rather than to use open hostility. But... wasn't it more or less what the Obama Administration was doing? Reportedly?
