Just that really

I am wondering if anything is open as its not tourist time and not going in the week leading too, or after, Christmas .

Any Edinburgh MNs around to tell me there are things to do ?

TIA

Zoo is lovely on Christmas Day - lots of people - a wide mix of people. The mansion house in the zoo often does Christmas lunch. The cafe's at the zoo were closed last time I spent Christmas at the zoo - so I took a picnic.

Toottootcar · 03/09/2017 22:02

Yes can get lunch at the zoo but it's bookable in advance.
Let's not keep telling the OP about nice stuff up here though or she'll decide to come after all.

rackhampearl · 03/09/2017 22:02

We go every year early December though for one and DD birthday. Xmas is wonderful in Edinburgh with the German market and all the lights. We even have a Christmas dinner with haggis. I'm so looking forward to this year. Edinburgh has my heart.

ArriettyCArriettyC · 03/09/2017 22:06

We're thinking of going too - thanks everyone!

Fluffyears · 03/09/2017 22:27

The market can get too packed for my liking but I love how Christmassy it makes me feel. It has been very mild the past few decembers, even with just my winter coat I've been sweltering. Winter weather seems to hit Feb-may as we've had snow in may the last few years. Think Edinburgh is drier but windier than Glasgow.

I wouldn't bother with Greenock as it's not really a great place for tourists.

Mind you since you aren't coming due to us all being cunts enjoy LONDON.

wannabestressfree · 03/09/2017 22:28

My partner has a big birthday this year and this was my plan. I just hope it's not mucho cash- his birthday is quite selfishly Dec 30!

NorthernLurker · 03/09/2017 22:35

Gutted to have missed the rant.

There used to be a holiday inn next to the zoo, perfect place to stay for that if it's still there.

BlackJesus · 03/09/2017 23:16

that sounds like an amazing rant I missed Sad

Auldspinster · 03/09/2017 23:27

I'm from Edinburgh and lived in Greenock for a few months when I was a student nurse. There isn't much there although the surrounding areas like Kilmacolm and Bridge of Weir are nice and the views of the Clyde on the road to it are lovely.

Seeingadistance · 03/09/2017 23:33

I'm sorry I missed the rant.

Ah, well.

MrsFezziwig · 03/09/2017 23:36

OP you snapped at the wrong poster so maybe it would be polite to apologise?
And If you insist on posting in AIBU you got off lightly asking if a British city would be "open" in December.

MrsFezziwig · 03/09/2017 23:40

Grrr! Posted after the first rant then realised that I missed what must have been an even better rant! MNHQ you are such spoilsports!

NikiBabe · 03/09/2017 23:48

I have my finger on the button to reserve a hotel from 24th to 27th.
I have to input my card details but apparently you dont get charged.

Not sure if I trust it.

MidnightAura · 04/09/2017 00:51

Gutted I missed the rant too!

I'm smiling at the thought of Edinburgh just shutting up shop for Winter. Love Edinburgh but I'm biased!

Katedotness1963 · 04/09/2017 03:53

Best one I've seen was on a FB travel to Scotland page. Someone asked what injections she'd need before traveling to Scotland. She knew she'd need some as she had traveled to other third world countries...

wannabestressfree · 04/09/2017 06:06

@NikiBabe booking.com is good and they ask for details to hold it. Check the terms and conditions though as sometimes they charge one or two nights before/ a percentage.

fustercluckery · 04/09/2017 06:35

Kate, a uni friend from Surrey asked me in all seriousness if we have any countryside in Yorkshire!

This thread has made me pine for Edinburgh though - I need to book a break there soon!

StoorieHoose · 04/09/2017 18:27

Gutted I missed the rant

flippinada · 04/09/2017 18:38

The rant was epic. OP went from 0-60 on the rantometer very quickly indeed. Think of 0 as being mild mannered and 60 as full on rage with lots of swears.

fannydaggerz · 04/09/2017 18:39

The Christmas market in Edinburgh is amazing. We go every year.

Wrap up, it's cold although it wasn't as cold last year as it has been previous years.

Poshjock · 04/09/2017 19:56

I'm laughing at the jock's saying it's not really cold. It so is! ear muffs, gloves and thick socks are a must!

Do THE DOME! It's absolutely gorgeous, the tree there is fabulous. Afternoon tea is great, you just go in a queue - about 1/2 hour wait but it is lovely!

If you want to see Greenock, do it, there is not much there but you have a specific reason to want to. The train is about 2 1/2 hours. Go early see the views in daylight, catch the train back to Glasgow and spend a couple of hours seeing their Christmas Market. Do visit the BUCHANAN GALLERIES - gorgeous! and only a minutes walk from the train station.

Fife to Edinburgh - depends where you are traveling from. about 1/2 hour with no traffic from Dunfermline to city centre and about 40 minute on the train. Train is not too expensive but last train back is 11.20pm. There is a night bus to Dunfermline for the brave or the drunk!

squoosh · 04/09/2017 20:14

It's really not that cold.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/09/2017 20:16

It isn't that cold and Edinburgh rarely gets snow. I missed the rant too.

OnlyRose · 04/09/2017 20:16

It really, really isn't!

Willow2017 · 04/09/2017 20:21

Havent ever felt 'really really cold' at an Edinburgh Market. Maybe chilly for younger kids so take gloves etc just in case, but normal winter day clothes will do.
