Aibu to have an irrational hatred of JoJo bows?

Is it even irrational?! Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with a hair accessory in general. But a) these are just so... big and b) seems most people don't have a clue how to wear them. I've seen the odd one worn so, while not to my taste, it looks vaguely 'right' but in the most part kids seem to do whatever they would normally do with their hair then just slap it on top of their head as though there's no correlation between hairstyle and bow. Basically it's like they are wearing helicopter blades. Just...odd. Prejudice not helped by fact took DD to theatre yesterday and her view was completely obscured by the ginormous helicopter bow plonked on top of the head of the kid in front. (Appreciate in the great scheme of things this is not something to waste energy on but friend and I were musing on way back from theatre and, if DD's friends are anything to go by, they seem to be very marmite. Love or hate?)

Yanbu. I've banned them in my house! Horrible tacky looking things. I think schools should ban stupid head wear phases!

knobblykneesandturnedouttoes · 01/09/2017 21:26

I think as parents we're not really supposed to like the latest trends are we? I think the massive ones are awful but I'm really not in a position to comment. I wore a floppy hat in the 90's. And I loved it. My mum however, hated it in secret, just like we should all be doing with the bows, while waiting for the phase to pass. (Hopefully the next phase will be a little bit more subtle). What really does make me angry about the bows though, is the ridiculous prices.

oldlaundbooth · 02/09/2017 00:12

One to avoid, I'd say.

They are hideous! Nothing like looking over a sea of jo jo bows in assembly to make you chuckle! My daughter loves them I hate them! Lucky for her she has the most darling of nans that doesn't even bother to pretend my opinion counts and bought her about 10 in varying idiocy of sizes and colours! As I was told by all involved "it's none of your business"! If only I was the Mum and it was eh!ConfusedGrin

It's a bow. I don't understand the angst. Surely there are worse things they can do in life

Indeed there are -like being an actual grown up woman but still coming out with the sort of sneery, spiteful comments on here about something as harmless as this which a little girl likes.

ForalltheSaints · 02/09/2017 06:53

I don't consider having taste to be an irrational hatred.

I think it depends what sort of family you grew up in. I wasn't allowed to have every fad that came along. We didn't have money to waste on things that were just bits of tat and would be out of fashion in six months time. I had fewer but more quality things. I remember the children that had every new fad going and they were all of a certain ilk. I didn't ever feel hard done by as I simply didn't expect to have something just because lots of other people did. I really don't think you need to get children things that you genuinely don't like, whatever that is. Its healthy for them to realise that some things are simply not going to happen.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/09/2017 09:17

I don't consider having taste to be an irrational hatred

"Having taste" is largely subjective.

"Hating" a temporary children's fad is rather irrational. Posting the sort of sneering comments (and I see that old favourite "chavvy" made at least one appearance) is mean- spirited. Feeling smug that your good taste means a temporary children's fad doesn't appeal to you is too.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 02/09/2017 15:01

What does 'having taste' equate to? Many things that are thought to be 'tasteful' and boasted about by numerous posters do not 'do it' for me. I wouldn't comment on them because people like them.

The fact that they profess to 'have taste' really doesn't mean that they have, just that whatever the item is, appeals to them.

Why be sneery? It just makes you sound insecure and a bit dyspeptic.

MiddlingMum · 02/09/2017 15:40

I agree with many posters that they are hideous.

However, haven't we all worn something in our youth that we thought was the bees knees at the time and would be horrified at now? Surely we should give our children that freedom to have cringy photos to look back on.

I was upset my DM wouldn't shorten my trousers and sew tartan round the bottoms - Bay City Rollers style Grin

Surely you could say that about any phobia.

Threenme · 02/09/2017 17:06

Middling Mum that's a very good way to look at it! They are especially fun when there are nearly the sIze of the child's head!Grin

verbaIkint · 02/09/2017 20:08

Lambzig, I often enjoy a walk around Skeggy to pick up some clotted fudge, sugar dummies, occasionally a cock rock for DM.
Jojobos or weaponry guised as fidget spinners were mainly everything you could buy. Can't even get fake Vans anymore, gone right down!

dnwig · 02/09/2017 20:15

I'd never heard of these!

Feeling left out now...

threelittlerapscallions · 02/09/2017 21:05

I like them in general, one of my daughters looks good in them as she has crazy curly hair and the bow doesn't look so huge as the hair is big as well if that makes sense. Other daughter a tomboy so won;t wear them anyway.

JoeMaplin · 02/09/2017 22:01

I saw a mum in her 30s wearing one today. I don't tho k it was ironically.

jjbutt · 03/09/2017 10:56

there's no correlation between hairstyle and bow. Basically it's like they are wearing helicopter blades*

But don't these bows originate from all-star cheer, and that is exactly how the bows are worn
cheer bows

IncyWincyGrownUp · 03/09/2017 11:12

I don't like them. Thankfully my daughter has hair too short and is too old to want one. One of my boys has long hair but apparently having his hair in a bobble at times is too much to deal with so no boys there either.

The school I volunteer in has banned them from PE sessions, and is encouraging the children to have smaller less flamboyant hair accessories for practical reasons.

summersgoneaway · 12/09/2017 11:28

I have just bought my 8 year old 3 1 in sale 2 free a lot of her friends at school wear them

summersgoneaway · 12/09/2017 11:30

She have very long hair she wears a ponytail so bow will sit at the top of it
Wouldn't of paid full price for one £10 Rrp
I paid £5 each and one was free
Bought medium sized
She has wanted them for ages as in sale didn't mind getting

TonySoppyrano · 12/09/2017 11:32

Awful, cheap-looking things.

Capricorn76 · 12/09/2017 12:55

They're harmless and little girls like them. I think it's weird that some parents are so desperate to fit into the middle class that they won't allow their child to make the odd adolescent fashion mistake.

And what is 'taste'? Is it having your house done up Scandinavian style with Farrow and Ball paint everywhere. Why are some people so desperate to conform?

summersgoneaway · 14/09/2017 10:14

They really suit my dd
