Aibu to have an irrational hatred of JoJo bows?

Is it even irrational?! Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with a hair accessory in general. But a) these are just so... big and b) seems most people don't have a clue how to wear them. I've seen the odd one worn so, while not to my taste, it looks vaguely 'right' but in the most part kids seem to do whatever they would normally do with their hair then just slap it on top of their head as though there's no correlation between hairstyle and bow. Basically it's like they are wearing helicopter blades. Just...odd. Prejudice not helped by fact took DD to theatre yesterday and her view was completely obscured by the ginormous helicopter bow plonked on top of the head of the kid in front. (Appreciate in the great scheme of things this is not something to waste energy on but friend and I were musing on way back from theatre and, if DD's friends are anything to go by, they seem to be very marmite. Love or hate?)

Note to self - we're not going anywhere near Claire's Accessories until they've gone.

ambereeree · 01/09/2017 09:13

I remember wearing a shellsuit and a massive bow late 80s or early 90s...the horror...

londonrach · 01/09/2017 09:14

What are they

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 01/09/2017 09:23

I'm not keen either, my DD (10) loves them and has several. She only wears them for dance class though.

Claire's are selling them off and the next craze is going to be 'cat ears' that Ariana Grande has been wearing! 😩

Sayyouwill · 01/09/2017 09:30

They're awful.
I love hair accessories when they're done right, but these look awful unless they are part of a dance costume or something.
I also hate headbands on babies.

MrsMarigold · 01/09/2017 09:41

I just had to check what they are, I can't say they are common in North London, never even seen one.

SteelyTesticlesOfObjectivity · 01/09/2017 09:44

No way hosay! My nearly 7 yr old wanted one and got told straight "no! If you want to look like some country hick from the deep south then no!!"

This hick from the south can spell Jose! GrinGrin hosay. Ffs.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/09/2017 09:45

I wonder if some of the posters decrying these as 'tacky' would be so calm if something their children liked was described as the same? No, I don't expect so.

I don't know what sort of poster uses the word 'tacky' to describe kids' stuff. Not one I would listen to anyway.

nothingontelly · 01/09/2017 09:46

It's just another fad, nothing to get worked up about.
I would on the other hand become increasingly worried about your

limecordial · 01/09/2017 09:48

Just to say

A) I've seen LOADS in N London
B) can only speak for where I live but def NOT a class thing round here. The kids I've bed talking about were all very obviously middle class but the craze seems to be pretty generic round here
C) I never ever ever wore a shell suit or a fergie bow (etc etc) Leg warmers another matter altogethet

No, they are grim! But harmless. Little girls from all generations wear awful tat.

I personally recall (as a 90s child):

Velvet headbands with your name glitter glued on
Those spiky headbands that you used to push back and flip to give you a massive bouffant
White ankle socks over black tights
Rimmel Heather Shimmer lipstick (far too dark for most people, me included)
Coloured mascara with matching eyeshadow (hello purple for both, you look like you've got black eyes!)
Spiral perms
Hair mascara (especially nice when it went all dry and stiff!)
That fashion of having two thin stands of hair covered in hairspray dangling in your face
Tippex-ed fingernails
Very overplucked eyebrows

Rite of passage to have awful fashions as a kid/young teen! Let them have fun while they are little (and hope the trend for those god-awful monster eyebrows has passed by the time they get older!).

Lonelynessie · 01/09/2017 09:52

Not a huge fan myself but my 6 year old loves them, and if you can't have fun and wear oversized bows when you're 6, then when can you?

I do make sure they are placed correctly though, not just plonked on the top of her head 😂

SparklyMagpie · 01/09/2017 09:55

Not to everyone's taste but you have JoJo off dance mom's to thank for all of this Grin

ambereeree · 01/09/2017 09:58

Where in N London are you OP? I haven't seen many

WhoWants2Know · 01/09/2017 10:00

Lol, we already have the cat ears with matching collar and tails, and they're quite cute on little ones who think pretending to be a cat is fun.

The Jo Jo bows caught my kids' interest, but we ended up buying ribbons and making bows that they can wear with their school uniforms. (For less than the cost of one giant Jo Jo bow)

Aibu to have an irrational hatred of JoJo bows?
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/09/2017 10:00

I can't get worked up about them as I was a teen in the 80's and we all wore Madonna and Fergie bows.

Saying that I've seen some adults wearing them recently and it looks odd to say the least!

LuluJakey1 · 01/09/2017 10:00

Hideous- I had to google them mind to find out what they are.

limecordial · 01/09/2017 10:18

I think it's the mis placement that drives my hatred Grin

Also yes to many hideous fashions of the 80s/90s but to the best of my memory they didn't impede people's views on theatres and cinemas

And ambereeree have seen many, many, many up and down the northern line (high barnet branch). Live near highgate.

DD has one friend who is never without one...but she puts them in the right place at least. It's the helicopter style plonking...

BackforGood · 01/09/2017 10:23

YANBU. They do look ludicrous, but, if you can't look ludicrous when you are 6, then when can you ? Grin
Fashion is there for other generations to mock.

sashh · 01/09/2017 10:28

Fergie bows
The alice bands with your name badly written on
Puffball skirts
Shell suits

I lived through others wearing all of them, I thankfully, somehow was immune.

ambereeree · 01/09/2017 10:43

I have to say i wouldn't want my daughter to have one because they're naff. But I'm sure those girls love them. Just as i loved my huge satin bow in the 80s.
I haven't seen many around the whetstone area.

I think they look utterly ridiculous. Particularly on tiny babies.

LuLuuuuuuu · 01/09/2017 10:55

Sun In , Haha . Takes me back to a hair disaster .

Had brown hair thought Sun In spray may help lighten it . It did .. Only to the 4 shades lighter , which was orange . Hasty trip to hairdressers and she got it a nice light brown .

JoJo Bows I have no opinion on really . Seen some little girls with them in and reminded me of Fergie bows and recycled .
