Aibu to have an irrational hatred of JoJo bows?

Is it even irrational?! Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with a hair accessory in general. But a) these are just so... big and b) seems most people don't have a clue how to wear them. I've seen the odd one worn so, while not to my taste, it looks vaguely 'right' but in the most part kids seem to do whatever they would normally do with their hair then just slap it on top of their head as though there's no correlation between hairstyle and bow. Basically it's like they are wearing helicopter blades. Just...odd. Prejudice not helped by fact took DD to theatre yesterday and her view was completely obscured by the ginormous helicopter bow plonked on top of the head of the kid in front. (Appreciate in the great scheme of things this is not something to waste energy on but friend and I were musing on way back from theatre and, if DD's friends are anything to go by, they seem to be very marmite. Love or hate?)

Maybe I need my head looking at but when I first glanced at the title I thought this thread was about something very different.

YANBU because they are ugly - but YABU because everyone on this thread probably wore something just as ugly when they were that age. My era was the 90s - which included such gems as Spice Girls-inspired fashion, adidas poppers and Alicebands with my name written on in pink glitter. So I'm in no position to judge anyone.

RubyGoat · 01/09/2017 08:15

For me, it's the fact they are relatively expensive for a relatively small amount of ribbon. Branded ribbon. Someone is laughing all the way to the bank. I don't personally like the look of them either but I think, each to their own. I suspect my opinion on how they look, is coloured by the knowledge of how bloody expensive they are...

PodgeBod · 01/09/2017 08:17

I think they're cute. I also like bows on babies, even if they are bald Grin

KittyVonCatsington · 01/09/2017 08:18

Hate - they seem to be a northern thing - not so popular down south

Not strictly true. I see them everywhere in SE London and Kent - a little hard to miss as they are so big!!!!

As a teenager I wore those large butterfly hair clips. I view these bows as a similar thing.

blackteasplease · 01/09/2017 08:26

My dd would join you in hating them OP! She is 8 and they seem to be a craze in her class (darn sarf for PP who wondered if they are northern). They are a bit big but O don't especially mind them!

WindwardCircle · 01/09/2017 08:30

To the adult eye they're horrible, but they're also harmless. Unlike a lot of little girl fashions they don't make the wearer look like a mini teenager, no one in secondary school would be caught dead wearing one, and although for a bit of ribbon on a clip they're expensive they're not actually expensive or out of the price range of most people unlike hugely pricy trainers. And it could be a lot worse, at that age I was wearing deely boppers and thinking I was it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/09/2017 08:31

Walkingdead, you're rude... and a country 'hick' would probably use the correct term. Hmm

MadameJosephine · 01/09/2017 08:32

They are horrible, thankfully 4yo DD has not yet discovered them

However, I come from a generation where these were all the rage so I can't really complain Grin

My niece liked these bows at 8, I don't think she still does though. It's funny, that line between little girl and tween-ager, seems to change from one to the other in a flash, no lead in sometimes.

I don't much like the bows but I'm not the age group that would find them appealing. Harmless things though. I too remember the hair mascara and the Fergie bows - and RaRa skirts! Shock

Namechangetempissue · 01/09/2017 08:35

I can't get worked up about it really. Yes, they are tacky as fuck and look ridiculous- but every fashion/rage that comes out for kids is a guaranteed adult hate. From the dawn of time I bet adults have been rolling their eyes at what their kids have chosen to put on today. Mini skirts, sun-in, pierced NAILS (anyone remember that?!), platform clompy shoes, double denim, the mullet....

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/09/2017 08:35

Deeley-boppers, Madam! Grin

Headofthehive55 · 01/09/2017 08:37

It's just fashion.
You don't have to like it - you aren't the one wearing it.
Batwing sleeves big big hair, and shoulder pads in everything! Pussy cat bows, all ridiculous really.

3EyedRaven · 01/09/2017 08:39

Ah, well, if you can't look like a decorated tree when you're six, when can you?
TBH, I think they're very inoffensive.
I wouldn't wear one myself, but dont see why people care what little girls wear in their hair.

Yes, the last thread on this was awful. People Saying that the girls wearing the bows now will be the ones with underage pregnancies, calling children 'chavs', just really sneery and nasty.

sashh · 01/09/2017 08:42

YABU to think this is irrational

AccrualIntentions · 01/09/2017 08:43

I don't think it's irrational, they're fucking hideous. I dare say my mum thought some of my accessories of choice as a child were hideous too, but that doesn't mean these aren't.

See also hair bands on baby girls. Are you so terrified someone might think she is a boy?

ticketytock1 · 01/09/2017 08:47

Yanbu
DDs friends mum started talking about them the other day and I sad yeah they are awful aren't they? She was taken aback and went on to tell me her dd had 4 of them 🤦‍♀️

Clandestino · 01/09/2017 08:50

They look cheap, tacky, horrendous and I can't imagine how they stay on if the child is actually doing what kids are supposed to do, i.e. be active and run around. Otherwise I have no problem with them.

DD1's school has banned them for the coming year. I am ecstatic.

Bedsettee · 01/09/2017 09:02

I had great difficult looking my 40 odd year old friend in the face yesterday because my eyes just kept rising to the huge rainbow coloured bow on top of her head.
Until this thread I didn't realise it was a fashion and the bow had a name.

leccybill · 01/09/2017 09:09

All reduced to £5 and under in Claire's yesterday. They are on the way out.

Ledkr · 01/09/2017 09:11

I agree they aren't the most classy accessories, however as shatners says, they are for little kids so who cares?
My 6 year old wears one occasionally, she also wears a tutu with converse and more recently an exercise outfit, Halloween hat, tail and flower garland!
She has years to be conventional.
