To think that really pyjamas should be washed after every wear?

Not that I do it!
But they are worn next to the skin for 8 hours and I'd wash anything else worn like that..

What do you think?

I hover a inch above the bed all night and never touch anything or fart or have sex or anything like that. In the morning I burn all the bed linen and pillows then buy more.

Our bodies are designed to cope with the many bacteria thrown at it, and to co exist with many that are within us. Excessive use of 'cleaners' and especially bleaching, it seems a MN favorite, destroys the planet and our bodies capability to work with bacteria

Yes and no. Centuries ago, didn't people die of illnesses and diseases which were a result of poor hygiene? Soap has probably saved many lives and increased life expectancy.

SideOrderofSprouts · 01/09/2017 09:38

I couldn't sleep naked.

I wash my pjs after every other use. Same as the kids. Bedding once a week. Towels after every other use.

Pigface1 · 01/09/2017 09:41

It's when I see threads like this that I realise why the planet's fucked. Washing towels after every use?!!

I'm team minger. I grew up eating food off the floor and sleeping in the dog's basket. I haven't had a cold for 5 years. My DH grew up with a germ-phobic SAHM who was a neat freak, sought antibiotics for his every sneeze, and basically followed him round with antibacterial spray. He now has a number of autoimmune conditions, one of them (ulcerative colitis) being pretty serious and debilitating.

Obviously other factors - genes etc - will inevitably be at play but having read a lot about research into autoimmune conditions, I don't think it's coincidental.

Pigface1 · 01/09/2017 09:46
  • I should say that I wasn't made to sleep in the dog basket. I did have my own bed available.
Sallystyle · 01/09/2017 09:56

I sleep naked. PJs are just to lounge around in. I wash them when I need to wash them. When they start smelling a bit or are visibly dirty.

I also wear jeans for many days without washing them! I also wear tops for more than one wash unless I have been sweating.

I am not a minger. I am not obsessive about being clean. I just wash things when they need washing.

5rivers7hills · 01/09/2017 10:06

Why on earth would you not wear knickers under your pyjamas?!

Why would you?

Not good to have close fitting underwear all the time - let yourself breathe!

Cailleach666 · 01/09/2017 10:09

I often don't wear knickers during the day- I would never wear them at night, unless to support a sanitary pad.

I hate the feeling of knickers.

Oooh I love a good washing habits thread! I'd say I'm somewhere in the middle - 10 second rule is alive and kicking in our house!
Jammies get washed after 2 wears (unless it's hot and I'm sweaty, and I do get sweaty) or if I spill cereal on them at breakfast! Kids would wear theirs til they walked off on their own, so i tend to intervene after 3-4 days (they're not sweaty)
Undies are changed and washed after every wear, as are tops (see aforementioned sweatiness) anything else is washed when it needs it.
Towels are good for 3-4 uses (hung up to dry in between) and bedding gets changed weekly (still sweaty!)
Everything is washed on a 30 cycle, hung out to dry on the line as far as possible, or on the airer (don't have a tumble drier) and I don't use any of the Dettol type thingies that seem to be popular. I'm ok with germs, but not being stinky. I think washing clothes is plenty without using extras, but have no opinion on others who do use it.

demirose87 · 01/09/2017 10:30

I wash mine after every wear. I don't wear underwear with mine so I agree with pp who said its like wearing underwear twice. I have a bath of an evening so I like putting on clean clothes. I might wear a pj top or nightie twice but not pj bottoms.

JKR123 · 01/09/2017 10:37

If worn without underwear then yes I would wash! If worn with underwear then I wouldn't wash before every use

FizzyJelJel · 01/09/2017 10:38

wtf? they're just like normal.clothes. If they are physically dirty they get thrown in the laundry. If not they're okay for another wear...kinda rotten people wearing pyjamas for a week...

CallySinammon · 01/09/2017 11:12

'Everyone's clothes/pjs washed everyday in our house - even on holiday'

Wow, I bet your family holidays are Fun Timezzzz.

butteriesplease · 01/09/2017 11:27

I wash pjs once a week for all of us, bedding once a week or less frequently. We aren't particularly sweaty and the beds get aired etc. Why on earth would you wash pjs every day?? Mental as.
Towels as required, but they all get hung up to air/dry after each use. usually once a week or a bit less?? but nothing smells and we are all healthy and clean. With 5 of us there is plenty of washing as it is, without paranoia about pjs.

RhubardGin · 01/09/2017 11:39

Wow, I bet your family holidays are Fun Timezzzz

That made me laugh Grin

Well I am definitely in Team Minger according to MN standards! The only clothing items we wash after every use is underwear. And that doesn't include bras Shock

Everything else just gets thrown in the laundry when it's actually dirty/smelly.

Arsed with washing perfectly clean jammies and clothes every single day! How sweaty are you people??????

Cailleach666 · 01/09/2017 11:45

No paranoia about pjs here.

I simply like the feel and smell of clean nightclothes.
We are all different. Doesn't make anyone bad.
I have no interest in handbags or posh shoes- but I like fresh jammies every night. Is that a life crime?

ShotsFired · 01/09/2017 12:07

What exactly is the unthinkable thing that will happen to people if they wear clothes that have already been worn once? How far does this horrible effect extend? PJs? Shirt? Jumper? Coat? Hat?

@BreakfastAtSquiffanys My pjs don't get washed after one wear, but I get washed after wearing them, so I think that's ok
I agree. Unless we think clothes have feelings too, so they can't suffer the indignity of having human skin next to them more than once?

midnightmisssuki · 01/09/2017 12:22

The kids pj's I wash after every use, my husband's and mine maybe every two days, the bedding gets washed every two weeks and the pillow cases i change every two days ( ny mum sewed us loads so we have enough to last the week or so and this goes in the wash with the towels and bedding)

Cailleach666 · 01/09/2017 12:31

shotsfired What exactly is the unthinkable thing that will happen to people if they wear clothes that have already been worn once?

Nothing will happen. I only wash clothes daily that have been next to my skin, so jeans, jumpers coats etc. get washed less frequently.

I have fresh pjs every day.
If I wore the same ones for a week I am sure I wouldn't get sick, I wouldn't smell ( I shower every morning anyway), no bad thing would happen.

But I like the smell and feel of freshly laundered pjs, a little luxury to make my day feel a little better. I feel cosy and fresh going to sleep.

I am sure you have little luxuries in your life to make your day a little nicer.
I really don't see why it's a problem.

ShotsFired · 01/09/2017 13:01

But I like the smell and feel of freshly laundered pjs, a little luxury to make my day feel a little better.

That is a perfectly valid opinion/choice @Cailleach666

The query is to the pp who are recoiling in sheer disgusted horror at the very thought of wearing pyjamas more than once while they sleep.

Very different kettle of fish to you.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 01/09/2017 13:26

I wear nighties for the precise reason that I don't have to wash them every day. I would have to with pyjama bottoms and can't be arsed.

Cailleach666 · 01/09/2017 13:39

I can't get along with nighties, they seem to swivel three times around my torso and end up under my armpits.

lozzylizzy · 01/09/2017 13:44

Rinkydinkypink

*Shower every morning and night. Clean PJ's every night (or naked). Clean sheets every week.

I'm busy, I care about the environment. I just don't feel clean otherwise and it bothers me.*
