To ask how long it will take to die if we do get nuked

Just this really. How quick? I know the warning, if there is one, will only be a few minutes so nowhere near enough time to get to school and be with DC. But when the bombs hit, is it just a flash of light and then oblivion? Or a longer scarier process? Obviously I hope none of this will actually happen.

I'm in a rural area btw, not near any big cities.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 29/08/2017 14:16

I think we burn instantly..

StumpyScot92 · 29/08/2017 14:17

I'm near a nuclear storage base so I'd be gone pretty much instantaneously

meditrina · 29/08/2017 14:18

It all depends how close you are to the epicentre.

You probably want to be close enough to it to be instantly vaporised, or far enough away to be uninjured and not likely to be affected by radiation sickness.

Between those two distances (which depend on size of device and geography of impact area) it could be a bit gruesome.

Heyx · 29/08/2017 14:19

I don't have a basement or a sturdy building near me.

MagicalRealist · 29/08/2017 14:20

I think it's a given that anyone who survives will get radiation sickness isn't it?

mummyofmoomoos · 29/08/2017 14:21

Im not far from the early warning system at Fylingdale- so unsure if its a good thing or not...

Ninjakittysmells · 29/08/2017 14:21

I remember as a child being horrified by my dad saying if there was a nuclear attack he would put us all in the car and drive towards the bomb. As a parent now, I totally get it.

Littlecaf · 29/08/2017 14:22

Basically you want to be in a big city and die quickly rather than from nuclear holocaust after the event.

Watch 'Threads'.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/08/2017 14:22

You'd have to be fairly central in London to get vaporised by any nuke here. Far better to die quickly than slowly by radiation poisoning or starvation in a nuclear winter.

meditrina · 29/08/2017 14:23

"I think it's a given that anyone who survives will get radiation sickness isn't it?"

Nope. It's dose related, so depends on your distance from epicentre and also your individual constitution because - like severity of any other poisoning - it also depends on your health status before exposure.

MagicalRealist · 29/08/2017 14:23

Yeah this is why I'm wondering how long the process is likely to take. Guessing it's not going to be over in a few seconds for most of us then.

ImperfectTents · 29/08/2017 14:25

This is cheery

Fruitcocktail6 · 29/08/2017 14:25

I'm near London so I hope I'm gone in an instant. I really don't want to live in the aftermath.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 29/08/2017 14:26

Does anyone know the distance the bomb would affect?

I'm in Essex so if a bomb landed in London would we die instantly?

LuLuuuuuuu · 29/08/2017 14:27

Very close to London (especially the Canary Wharf area) so would probably notice a light briefly then be no more . Quick here for which I'm thankful.

Nobody would want to survive a nuclear war

XJerseyGirlX · 29/08/2017 14:27

lol @ imperfect Tents

catgirl1976 · 29/08/2017 14:28

We are near a BAE factory that has a massive runway and builds fighter jets and also near a nuclear facility so I think we'd be targeted for a bomb and go in a flash of light.

If not I am hoping years of watching The Walking Dead will have prepared me in some way.

Light heartedness aside it's a bloody terrifying time isn't it? :(

Ifailed · 29/08/2017 14:29

if you live pretty well anywhere in England you'll be fucked, either immediately, or soon after. If you do manage to hole up in the cellar or something for the recommended fortnight, you'll just be hunted down by the local cannibal tribe when you emerge.

Ninjakittysmells · 29/08/2017 14:29

I can't remember the name of it, but there's a website you can use to select your bomb and location to see what the fall out would be.

LuLuuuuuuu · 29/08/2017 14:29

www.nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/

This is scary but would give you some idea OP .

Ninjakittysmells · 29/08/2017 14:30

Ooh I think this is it!

Ninjakittysmells · 29/08/2017 14:30

Great minds Luluuuuu :D

Worriedrose · 29/08/2017 14:30

Very cheery!
You could Move to the Nevada desert and live in a caravan with tin foil on the windows only eating tinned peas!!
I would hope in any situation in life I would die instantly!

TopBitchoftheWitches · 29/08/2017 14:31

ifailed

I hope it would be immediate then.
