To ask how long it will take to die if we do get nuked

Just this really. How quick? I know the warning, if there is one, will only be a few minutes so nowhere near enough time to get to school and be with DC. But when the bombs hit, is it just a flash of light and then oblivion? Or a longer scarier process? Obviously I hope none of this will actually happen.

OP posts:

I think that the death and destruction would be more isolated than people are making out. See @Kursk post (or one of those horrible websites). Or Hiroshima.

With that said OP, I sense you're really worried about this and this thread is likely not helping at all. Try not to dwell on stuff like this, The North Korea situation is largely rhetoric and it's worth noting they flew a missile over Japan 8 years ago. It's an ongoing situation but I don't think we're on the brink of a nuclear war.

When US / Russia cut their phone line I felt really worried. It helped me to think about the fact we all share a space station for example. Whilst there's a lot of political rhetoric being flung around, we also have mutual arrangements which are operational. No one wants a nuclear war.

hmcAsWas · 29/08/2017 14:59

Its not going to happen!

NotAnotheChinHair · 29/08/2017 15:00

Well this is a jolly thread

adviceadviceasvic1234 · 29/08/2017 15:01

Bloody hell this thread has scared me to death Sad

Buggeritimgettingup · 29/08/2017 15:01

You should watch THREADS OP I was in it as a child (I remember our parents had to sign dispensation and we could only watch little bits at a time)

ragz134 · 29/08/2017 15:01

ninjakittysmells Yes if things looked really bad I would do the same to prevent my kids suffering... Awful thought though.

ikeadyounot · 29/08/2017 15:01

Instead of acting like it's a foregone conclusion, why not do something proactive - get involved with anti-war and anti-Trump protests, for instance. If more people took the time to stand up to dick-waving politics on all sides, the world would be a safer place.

CuppaSarah · 29/08/2017 15:01

If it all kicks off I'm off to my dads. He has guns and chickens. Then I can use my obvious charisma and charm(and terrifyingly good at shooting dad) to take control of my own small community when society breaks down.

I will allow you to join if you can offer something of value to my society. In return you'll get pigeon meat rations, eggs and protection from cannibal gangs. Wink

RuggerHug · 29/08/2017 15:02

Hit post too quick on mine. Gives details on distance affected from a blast at St . Pauls cathedral with times/damage etc. I watched it years ago in a 'wow that must have been terrifying watching this when it was a real threat, thank fuck that's over!'.

UnderCrackers5 · 29/08/2017 15:04

There is no protection from cannibal gangs

Mustang27 · 29/08/2017 15:04

Terrifying

Fantasticmissfoxy · 29/08/2017 15:04

Also realistically if you head to Scotland your chances would not be that much better here! We have massive military targets in airbases, the Trident Base and also major gas / oil infrastructure that would be key targets

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 29/08/2017 15:06

Depends on the bomb used tbh.
If you watched Threads the cloud went up and those a few miles away who didn't take shelter were vaporised after a flash about 4-5 mins later.

I would imagine break down of society afterward would be the real killer for a lot of people.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 29/08/2017 15:06

3 min warning was based on the missile coming from USSR

user1467662525 · 29/08/2017 15:07

How could anyone really know?

pringlecat · 29/08/2017 15:09

Had a look at that nuke map website. It's not reassuring at all. As a Londoner, if it's a small blast, I'm likely to be caught within the "Dying takes between several hours and several weeks" part.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 29/08/2017 15:09

Oh and I really trust the UN to sort this out Hmm

user1467662525 · 29/08/2017 15:09

I guess if you didn't get burnt to a crisp straight away, it would be a slow, lingering death from radiation sickness. 😱

PyongyangKipperbang · 29/08/2017 15:11

NK could be taken out very quickly if there was a real risk of him pressing the button.

China doesnt want NK to fall like that because it will be a failure for them. tThey helped NK from the very start and still supports them to a certain exent now, even though China is trying to embrace the west. NK is their embarrassing cousin and China wants them to say quiet and behave themselves, otherwise lots of awkward quesions start going CHina's way. As it is, I think it is inevitable that NK will fall very soon, while they were killing and starving and terrorising their own people (and were not sitting on a huge cache of oil Hmm )no one cared, but when they start throwing their weight around at the west it is going to lead to them being brought down.

The people who will suffer most are the ordinary people and those in the military who are not in the upper echelons. KJI will have no problem with using them as a human shield to protect himself. Millions will die :(

RuggerHug · 29/08/2017 15:11

Or suicide. I admit I am a coward and if I was unfortunate enough to survive initial blast but know what was in the post I would take that way out.Blush

No if you are close enough for the radiation then it won't be that slow.

hmcAsWas · 29/08/2017 15:13

My last post sounds awful! I am not encouraging anyone to do this - just thinking aloud about what I might do

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 29/08/2017 15:13

Pringle - I guess the benefit is that at least nowerdays we know the effects of radiation sickness at close proximity to a nuclear bomb. So should we be affected, we can off ourselves quickly

GrouchyKiwi · 29/08/2017 15:14

It does all make me want to move back to NZ, though.
