Just that really!
We had a super time in the Cotswolds (exhausting year, small children, couldn't face flights and high temps... this was perfect - house on lake with lots of super amenities - water activities for the older kids and beautiful walks locally, country pubs , quaint villages and relaxing.

We had four days camping near home. I was so nervous as first time camper and it's just me and the DC. It was perfect. The kids turned feral, wading in the stream, through mud, tree swings, forest. We toasted marshmallows on campfire.

greit fingers crossed for you for next year. Flowers

maddiemookins16mum one of my favourite ever memories is listening to Eine Kleine Nachtmusik in Schloss Mirabelle. (Mirabelle gardens are where the "do re mi" steps are.)

lauramcd86 · 29/08/2017 11:24

@nancy75 thanks for that xxx have only ever heard good things!! Must look into flights and accommodation :)

ohtheholidays · 29/08/2017 11:29

It didn't happen!
We were supposed to go on 3 small holidays in the UK but a shit time shit life got in the way.

DS15(who is asd) twisted his ankle the first day of the holidays and was on crutches for nearly 3 weeks,DD14 asd went through the roof then DS15 got really bad tonsilitis(we though he was going to end up in hospital)I got really ill and then yesteday DH had to spend hours at A&E with DD9(asd and disabled)as she somehow managed to trap a nerve in her elbow.

But we have managed lots of days out and although my family don't know it yet I'm planning a weekend away for us all in September and a week away in October half term. Now I just need life to play fair!

Callmegeoff · 29/08/2017 11:30

I'm currently on our Disney holiday in Florida. Dh is taking the organising very seriously and has downloaded some app that says what order to do rides in. even walked by some empty ones .Hmm

Day 5 my self and dcs knackered. And it's so expensive to eat out, I've taken to making packed lunches and mainly eating in the apartment !

Break nr 1: 5 hour flight for 3 days. It was alright. Good to experience something so very different (former soviet state)

Break nr 2: dull and drab.

Break nr 3: hotel was horrific for the money we spent on it. If I'd paid 3* rates I'd had still been peeved by the standard

Break nr 4: 3 hotels in 2 weeks. See above comment about nr 3, which also is true for hotel 3/3 on this trip. Other two were amazing.

Break 5: local weekender. Was good, weather too hot though. Fab restaurants and fab friends.

Break 6: huge row with DH. Thought about leaving him there.

Roll on Christmas holiday! Hopefully I won't be such a miserable cunt about that one. I think I'm just difficult to please.

tossmeacigarette · 29/08/2017 11:38

ohtheholidays that is a lot of crap thrown your way. I hope life plays fair indeed for your planned trips.

MardAsSnails · 29/08/2017 11:38

bananas see my comment about break nr 3 above! Fabulous place but jeez hotels are expensive for what you get.

PNGirl · 29/08/2017 11:45

Not been yet! We're going to Scotland for a wedding next week (from Wiltshire) and going to Prague for 4 days in October.

We did go to the New Forest in Feb, London in May, and Thorpe Park for 2 days in June.

Shodan · 29/08/2017 11:45

This year was the first holiday my sons (21 and 9) and I have been on, just the three of us, since I separated from XH last year.

None of us are particularly 'into' beach holidays, so the boys chose France. We took the ferry and drove to Evreux (west of Paris, about an hour by train) for the main bulk of our week, and had a great time- Paris by train for the day, two days at Eurodisney, Versailles- then drove back up to Normandy for one night to visit the war cemeteries.

It was an amazing holiday, made even better by not having a sulky, thin-lipped XH spoiling it by arguing the toss over pennies.

But it was hard work, if I'm honest. First time I've driven abroad, plus a lot of driving hours (not helped by the fact that we accidentally ended up in the world's longest motorway tunnel due to a slight neglecting of the satnav's instructions Blush Grin)

flownthecoopkiwi · 29/08/2017 11:46

Had a week in Italy which was lovely but HOT and had no air conditioning. Can't wait to go back again tho, although this time with air con and see a bit more of the country

Was supposed to have a family long weekend away glamping with friends but IL ill health meant DH couldn't come and had been planning a mini break this weekend which also won't happen.

We have young DC and hadn't taken them abroad before but will do so now loads. Seeing people go through their end of life makes you realise that you should go off and see more of the world and share these experiences with your children while you can.

chitofftheshovel · 29/08/2017 12:01

We had a staycation and it's been great. Got the tent up in the garden, had friends to stay and have explored our locale.

ihearttc · 29/08/2017 12:22

We went to Dubai at Easter which was lovely. DH works in the ME so we went to see him.

We had a long weekend at Centre Parcs at the beginning of the 6 week holiday and have just come back from Tenerife.

At the moment Im living for our holidays so the boys can see their Dad..it's one of the only perks of him working on the other side of the world!

pi1ates · 29/08/2017 12:37

Just back from 3 weeks on California which was beautiful. Drove north from LA, staying in various hotels along the coast up to Monterrey. Perfect weather - sunny, but not too hot. Fantastic food, no crowds, stunning coastline and laid back vibe compared to London. Also got to see some relatives in LA and was great for kids to spend time with cousins.
Went to Italy earlier in the year, but would not go in the summer as it's too hot and crowded for us.
Shame the £ is not stretching far at the moment - anywhere it seems!

Llanali · 29/08/2017 12:40

We did New Zealand and a stop over in Shanghai in January, which was incredible. I can't wait to go back to NZ. Not keen on shanghai with a kid though, will fly via LA and have a Hawaii stop over instead next time.

Just got back from the long weekend in the Cotswold Lakes- water sports, stunning
Weather and great food.

I'm going to Madrid weekend after next, on business but I am extending the trip so I can explore as I've never been before.

Then New York in October as massive surprise for my husband. Our first night together away without DC ever. She'll be four this month. Just a long weekend, a whistle stop break.

Then two weeks in the far east in November. Malaysia, Borneo or Sri Lanka. Haven't decided yet. I love it in that direction so no rush to decide where.

Nothing next year as I've blown the budget this year!!

@ginuser I'd love recommendations for Sri Lanka please! I've been recommended Galle. I want good hotels, child friendly (kids club!) and local street food/night markets. I don't want to eat in the hotels/western restaurants at all. Amy advice much appreciated! Thanks!

streetface · 29/08/2017 12:45

"How old are your children Streetface?"

11, 8 and nearly 2. (I was also pregnant on holiday and had absoutely no idea) so definitely won't be doing long haul again anytime soon! Shock

Shodan · 29/08/2017 12:51

I also had a week in Baltimore with a friend who is living there for a year.

It was fab- just us two, non-stop talking and laughing. We went to Washington, Philadelphia and New York as well as exploring nearby.

Glamorousglitter · 29/08/2017 12:54

So many replies, thanks !SmileFirstly apologies to anyone that I p*sed off, I did mean to post in chat not AIBU.
And the point of the tread was just to chat about holidays. Sheesh, click on if it bothers you that much! As another poster said, I like to hear what other people do for holidays too, family holidays are lovely and important to us, we ve had years where we couldn't afford one, or relied on the generosity of friends and family, lots of staycations and years where we simply couldn't do a holiday for either financial or health reasons too. Guess that s what makes me want to prioritise and really enjoy any time we do get away. I like hearing about what other people did as it helps with inspiration for next year!

I sat by the Grand Union Canal for an hour, watching and feeding the ducks. Decided it was too much bother to send any postcards Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/08/2017 12:59

silvery

I for one am upset at my lack of postcard

I do like feeding the ducks, my family members have been attacked a fair few times Grin

Icequeen01 · 29/08/2017 13:13

We went to Cyprus and for the first time booked a private villa with pool. The villa was huge even though it was only a 2 bed and the outside space was just gorgeous with views of the sea and a really decent sized pool. There were only a couple of other villas nearby and we were not overlooked at all and it was so peaceful.

We had never been to Cyprus before so had a car so we could do some exploring. Also hired our own little boat for an afternoon so DS17 could do some snorkelling along the coast which he loves. We totally fell in love with the island but it was VERY hot.

First time I haven't wanted to come home from a holiday to see my cats!

Funnyface1 · 29/08/2017 13:31

A midweek break to butlins which was actually great and we all enjoyed it. A couple of nights at Alton towers which was hell on earth, never again.

Waiting til the baby is bigger before we take her on a flight. Ds was 3 when he first went and that worked well.

DellaPorter · 29/08/2017 13:34

Spent Easter using Tesco vouchers for a weekend at a hotel near Coventry with fantastic pool. May bank holiday a long weekend in Croyde bay, kids had surfing lessons. May half term in Brittany (clearing out a house after a relative died) and got lots of beach time. Currently in n wales, cottage of a friend. Weather lovely. Done beach, bodyboarding, climbing, wild swimming, campfires etc

October half term have a £9.50 sun caravan holiday booked

Bumblebee35 · 29/08/2017 13:45

Some lovely holidays here, very envious!! Although I've spent the past year on mat leave so couldn't justify a proper holiday. I did a long weekend in weymouth with my mum and daughters and then 2 days at Alton Towers which was fun. My Dh and I want an extension so need to save for the next few years really, but I've always had an annual holiday. Those who haven't had holidays in the past, how did you keep yourself feeling positive and happy when everyone else is off and you're not??Smile
