Really fucked off with Euro exchange rate

We have been going on holiday self-catering to the same place in Europe for over 10 years.

This year everything feels prohibitively expensive - to the point where it is really inhibiting what we can choose to do.

We are here for 2 weeks and it's really hard as family of 4 (with 2 teenagers) to spend less than £100/euros a day on activities/eating out.

Not in a beach resort type place, so taking a picnic to the beach for the day isn't an option - nearly everything there is to do here costs money. 3 euros for a coffee, 3 for an ice-cream - it all quickly adds up. Even the 'cheap' food in the supermarket is expensive. Practically at parity with £.

Bloody Brexit!

I expect a Brexiteer will be on in a minute to say it's a small price to pay for sovereignty. Wink

Efferlunt · 27/08/2017 15:46

It's terrible what we've done to our country and national interest. :-(

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 15:46

grumpy

I feel your pain, i felt the same way on holiday this year

I just cling on to the thought that we have been lucky to have cheap holidays in the past

But its very hard when holidays can be few and far between

SophoclesTheFox · 27/08/2017 15:48

Yep. Welcome to my life: income in sterling, live in the Eurozone. Over the last two years I've had an effective 20% drop in income. And Brexiteers want me not to talk about it? Or to see it as a good thing/small price to pay/not related?

No. Not going to happen.

Agustarella · 27/08/2017 15:51

I think it may get much worse in the event of a 'no deal' scenario. Sorry, that's not very helpful. Hope you manage to enjoy your holiday in spite of having to scrimp a bit. I also miss the luxuries we had when the pound was stronger, and hope to start earning in euros shortly.

arethereanyleftatall · 27/08/2017 15:53

Isn't this a good thing though for the British purse? More people start holidayIng in the U.K., (both from the uk and abroad). Happy to be corrected.

arethereanyleftatall · 27/08/2017 15:55

The holidaying element of the exchange rate weakening I mean.

zaalitje · 27/08/2017 15:55

I'm hating it too, I'm due ivf in Greece, had it been pre the referendum it would have cost about £3.3k, currently looking to be £4.6k and likely to get worse, our savings will now only pay for 2 attempts not 3:(

Domino20 · 27/08/2017 15:59

We went to Croatia a few weeks ago and found it crippingly expensive and we're used to London prices. I'm not sure that being forced to holiday in Britain, because the rest of the world is prohibitively expensive, is any kind of silver lining.

granny24 · 27/08/2017 16:02

Pension in sterling taxed in U.K., live in Portugal. Today local cash machine was £1 For 99 cents. It will get much much worse.

thecatfromjapan · 27/08/2017 16:11

Tsk. It's making our exports cheaper! How dare you talk the UK down!!!

And as arethereanyleftatall says, it encourages visitors here - spending all their more valuable than the £ now currency here.

You need to think of the opportunities. During the summer, don't go on holiday. Invest in a camper stove, a mini-fridge and a portaloo, move your family into the sitting room and rent out the rest of your house to visitors to these glittering shores.

Kerchinggg!!!

WritingHome · 27/08/2017 16:15

it's good news for those using euros when we visit the UK though Grin

ilovesooty · 27/08/2017 16:20

It will certainly get worse. I believe we've reached an 8 year low at this point.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 27/08/2017 16:22

We found France so expensive this year and it's put us off travelling in Europe again so it's not just shit for us - I would imagine mainland European holiday destinations will start to struggle if us brits stop going.

Eve · 27/08/2017 16:23

Euro is preficted to go to 1.10 by end of year on 1 site I was reading!

gillybeanz · 27/08/2017 16:25

It's crap, the Euro and pound are worth about the same now.
European countries will lose out from the UK in the future.
Maybe they make enough from other countries through Tourism though and won't miss us too much.

PoppyPopcorn · 27/08/2017 16:25

Exchange rates are crap if you're travelling overseas. However, I do some freelance work for a company which pays me in euros so I'm earning more.

Legrandboucle · 27/08/2017 16:30

There was a news piece when I was in France last week exploring the benefits of the weak pound. There was lots of gloating about how cheap it was to visit the UK and how the value of the pound had plummeted. Sadly a lot of us don't own hotels, icecream stalls, shops etc so won't see the benefits. The suggestion that everyone just rents their house out is laughable.

whiteroseredrose · 27/08/2017 16:30

We've been going to Spain for years. It has been almost 1:1 before and bounced back.

Meandyouandyouandme · 27/08/2017 16:31

In 2009 it was €1.04 to the £ so slightly worse than now. But yes, it made our holiday in Majorca, seem much more expensive, it's scary.

SunshineAndSmile · 27/08/2017 16:31

With self catering we try to balance the cost by eating out less, having bbqs and buying fresh produce at local markets. Buying fruit, veg, bread, meat and fish was much cheaper and nicer than buying in supermarkets in Europe or the U.K. France is one of the more expensive destinations in Europe but other places in Europe outside of the main popular resorts are still good value.

MargaretTwatyer · 27/08/2017 16:34

We weren't paying for the value of these things before though were? Just the cost.

And if it's stimulating our export markets and decouraging speculative investment is much more important than making things cheaper for people who can afford an annual holiday every year IMO.

Birdsgottafly · 27/08/2017 16:35

People who like their holidays abroad aren't going to stay in the UK.

They will just cut back even more on what they spend on here to afford the same holiday that they always have.

planetclom · 27/08/2017 16:35

Care to tell me what exports? As the tories more or less killed our manufacturing industries as we would become a service economy, which worked well while we had other economies to service but we are about to lose them.
You can't have a cheaper holiday in the UK because guess what we import so much stuff and all that has gone up too, have you not noticed the smaller packets and increased costs of shopping. And the worst is cheaper ingredients

PNGirl · 27/08/2017 16:35

Yep. I work for a company that buys in stock from Portugal and the Brexiters are moaning that our prices have gone up.
