Obviously I know not everyone counts but for those that do, what is your average?

There is a lot in the news at the minute about people not being active enough so it's interesting to see what people do?

Also, how do you get your steps? Dog walking? Work? Treadmill?

I personally average around 8000 if I do the treadmill. Without the treadmill it's around 5000 which apparently is not enough?

How are you getting the Fitbits to fit around your ankles?

Sallystyle · 27/08/2017 00:02

I have the Samsung Gear and it is pretty bloody accurate. It doesn't add steps when I read and I can shake my arm around and it doesn't add steps.

I'm sure it gets it wrong at times. But not enough to make me think my step count is anything other than a couple of steps out at most, if anything.

Nuttynoo · 27/08/2017 00:03

12-20k

nokidshere · 27/08/2017 00:45

I average 350 a day!

Timefortea99 · 27/08/2017 01:02

If I WAH I walk for 4 miles before I start work which equates to 10,000'steps. Then I walk at lunchtime for 30 minutes to get more steps in. When I am at work I have to really want to make the 10k target. I do it by getting off my train 20 minute walk away and then trying to walk at lunchtime. Sometimes I have to get off the train at my home station and walk for 20 minutes to get to target. I have been doing this since January. I will take every opportunity to get some steps in. I have lost 25 pounds.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 27/08/2017 01:05

I average around anywhere between 10k and 12k (Fitbit One worn on my bra, so pretty accurate, though my Garmin watch broadly agrees) If I'm not running, I can still easy peasy do 10k if I walk to work and back (a mile each way) and have a leisurely half hour walk at lunchtime (I walk with dawdlers). I have an office job, but I have to go to far too many meetings, so walk around a fair bit. When I was coding all the time I would barely move for hours.

StrumpersPlunkett · 27/08/2017 01:22

Fitbit one attached to trouser pocket each day.
Mostly I clear 8,000
I aim for 10,000
If we are pottering round town or the zoo or something like that I will crack 14-16,000
Occasionally I will have a day of 2-300 getting up and down from sofa to make a cuppa but that is v rare.

vikingprincess81 · 27/08/2017 01:44

Fitbit surge here (worn on my dominant wrist and the app knows that) but dunno if that makes any difference Wink
My phone and Fitbit tend to agree (within around 50-100 steps) so I suppose it's accurate(ish)
Anyway. Spin class 3x a week accounts for a proportion of my step count - the pic refers to my latest spin class and how it affects my numbers. Because I drive to and from work I go out walking for 45 mins at lunch time (I get an hour and do a sedentary job so need to walk at lunch if I want to get my steps up) and will go out again after dinner with the dcs. I tend to average 10-12k daily over the course of the week, I walk on average 5 miles daily, and have my floors/hill goal set at 20, which I easily hit due to the stairs at work. My goal for active days is 5/7 which I always hit or exceed. I have no idea how people manage 25-30k steps - I don't have the time to walk that much! I gave DH my old charge HR when I bought my surge and competition definitely helps turns out I'm more competitive than I thought Grin

I average 350 a day!

Nokidshere - are you wearing a fitbit or device? If so it must be faulty.
Because surely that means all you do is sit, make a cuppa, go to the loo and sit again. Day in day out. I'm sure you do more than that! That's what I would get if I was ill in bed.

CountFosco · 27/08/2017 08:42

14k steps yesterday plus a swim that was equivalent energy expenditure to about 8.5K steps according to my Misfit even though I was pushing myself a lot more than I would during a walk of a few miles. Of course, it doesn't think my yoga counts at all even when I'm out of breath and can feel my heart going. So I take it all with a pinch of salt.

Chronic arthritis Sad I do sometimes manage more but that's an average figure over a month.

Maybe I should take it with me to my pip assessment as "evidence' Confused

Roussette · 27/08/2017 09:33

Awww I'm sorry Nokidshere, it must be painful and I'm sure you have good days and bad days.

LongtimeLurkerNowPokemonHunter · 27/08/2017 09:55

I've only been tracking since July but push for 10k per day minimum.
I find my fitbit very active and count it manually too. I usually wake with 3-4 steps max or 20 if I've been up to the loo!
To hit 10k I need to make an effort to walk to or from work, or walk more at work. For example walking to the other end of the building to fill my water bottle!
I have the same hand hygiene restrictions at work, and I'm in a non desk based job so it's a bra one I've got.

BackforGood · 27/08/2017 13:30

Thankyou forosting nokidshire.
I did 469 yesterday.
This thread is only recording people with massively high step counts, so giving a really distorted view.
Most people in the UK do nothing like the 10k. Probably nothing like 5k.

Lockheart · 27/08/2017 13:37

I don't have a Fitbit, so I'm reliant on my iPhones app, and I don't always carry my phone so my numbers won't be that accurate.

On weekdays when I commute I do about 6000 walking to and from train stations. But I also walk around the office and go up and down several flights of stairs multiple times during the day, and this doesn't get recorded as I don't carry my phone.

At the weekend it depends. Sometimes it's as low as 400 (lazy days!) other times it's over 20,000 (going out shopping for example). It just depends what I'm doing. Currently I'm on 2162 today, and I have no plans to leave the house again, so I would say I'll hit max 3000 today.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/08/2017 15:19

Backforgood you're right. This is a self selecting sample! The research last week showed that the majority of adults in the uk don't walk for 10 minutes a month so the super steppers here are not a representative sample of uk adults.

Ecureuil · 27/08/2017 15:23

The research last week showed that the majority of adults in the uk don't walk for 10 minutes a month

Genuinely pretty surprised at that

sirfredfredgeorge · 27/08/2017 15:59

Ecureuil that's because the research last week didn't say that at all.

It said a minority of 40-60 year olds did not manage a brisk 10 minute continuous walk every day. www.gov.uk/government/news/6-million-adults-do-not-do-a-monthly-brisk-10-minute-walk

Which is quite a different thing, it does highlight though that steps are not as useful as doing vigourous exercise unless of course they are exercise - I can easily walk 8000 steps a day without my heartrate getting above 90 all day, that would be as sedentary in exercise terms as others doing considerably less. So I could hit the 10,000 steps mark comfortably every day, but I'd be a lot less fit and healthy than if I did less but did it vigourously (for me a 10km race only gives me about 6500 steps)

BayLeaves · 27/08/2017 16:01

I tested this out recently with my old Fitbit and I can't believe that I actually do 11,000 a day on days where I'm at home all day with a 2 month old baby and a 3 year old! Literally just from housework and looking after the two kids!

NC4now · 27/08/2017 16:06

My Fitbit charge 2 misses loads of steps. If I'm pottering round the kitchen for example, it doesn't count them because I'm quite light on my feet.
I've just been to IKEA and clocked 300 steps all the way round. It's definitely more than that, but because I was walking slowly it didn't pick them up. It annoys me.

OriginalRhubarbGin · 27/08/2017 16:14

I have a basic step app on my phone and average 12,000-15,000 on a term time week day and make sure I do 10k on a weekend by going for an extra evening walk if needs be. On particularly active days I top 20k, and usually top 25k once a month. Holidays have been a bit more difficult, i barely average 5k a day and have to go for a specific fast walk every single evening to make up the difference.

Ecureuil · 27/08/2017 16:59

That makes more sense sirfredfredgeorge.
I do 10k on my exercise bike most mornings, at a quite high intensity (heart rate of 140). It doesn't register on my step count, obviously. So steps taken definitely aren't the be all and end all!

wooster16 · 27/08/2017 17:05

I've got a Fitbit and when I first started tracking my steps I was in shock at how sedentary I was! Only getting around 4-5,000 or so steps in per day. Now I walk to and from work and try to be more active throughout the day so I hit my daily target of 10,500. At the weekends I do more, around 15-20,000.

Greyhorses · 27/08/2017 17:23

I do between 10 and 15k usually although some days are significantly less and some days I hit 25k!

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 27/08/2017 17:32

Between 4000 and 9000 usually. I'm working up to 12000.
