To ask how many steps you do in a day?

Obviously I know not everyone counts but for those that do, what is your average?

There is a lot in the news at the minute about people not being active enough so it's interesting to see what people do?

Also, how do you get your steps? Dog walking? Work? Treadmill?

I personally average around 8000 if I do the treadmill. Without the treadmill it's around 5000 which apparently is not enough?

35,000!!

Okaaaaaay then.

SallyOMalley · 26/08/2017 19:34

If I cycle to work, it's usually around 8000 a day. If I walk/bus it, my average is around 11000 but can go up to 15/16k. I have a desk job but if I have an event on I'm running round all day!

schokolade · 26/08/2017 19:36

Tippy which fitbit do you have? I have a charge2 on my wrist. It always reads zero when I get up in the morning (despite many rounds of breastfeeding during and accompanying book reading during the night).

I can believe some false steps, but not 1000 steps for a correctly worn charge 2.

Ecureuil · 26/08/2017 19:37

My Fitbit usually reads about 19 in the morning, despite my sleep being really restless. The 19 is the steps to and from the toilet in the middle of the night Grin

TippyTinkleTrousers · 26/08/2017 19:39

I've absolutely no idea 😳

But cue those who have done all those steps to claim they have a Fitbit charge 2. 😄😄

TippyTinkleTrousers · 26/08/2017 19:40

ecurecill mine would say I'd done 400 or so in the night. I get a few times but not that much. ☺️

TrinityRhino · 26/08/2017 19:40

No idea but definitely not enough

cheminotte · 26/08/2017 19:42

If you are bothering to measure than you are going to be doing more than people who don't surely? I think the inactive people may be driving to work / school / shops and only walking between their car and wok etc and bag plus a bit of moving around at home. You'd be lucky to get 1,000 if that's your lifestyle. I mostly cycle to work but walk once a week and also deliberately go to toilet on a different floor just to get a bit more movement in my day.

IndianaMoleWoman · 26/08/2017 19:42

I do about 8,000 but I'm tall with long legs. One of my friends is a Facebook Fitbit bore and posts her steps and distance every day. For the same distance I've walked she does about 3,000 more steps. She's a foot shorter than me. Not fair!

Purplerainbow · 26/08/2017 19:45

Sorry to butt in, can I just ask how accurate are fitbits really? I use the app on my iPhone. Only ONCE has it ever gone over 10,000 was after a day at lego land! I'm quite active, and I think it's a good day if it reaches 5000 (despite knowing I should be 10,000)

BuzzKillington · 26/08/2017 19:45

I have to make a concerted effort to get to 10k or over, despite having a non-office based job.

Today, for e.g., I have been to the gym (was a spinning class so didn't count steps), for 2 dog walks, one of which was quite long and have only done 10,278 according to my Fitbit.

I will confess to a 2.5 hour sleep this afternoon, so that didn't help.

Fairylea · 26/08/2017 19:47

I do about 7000. I try to get out for a long walk everyday - either a countryside type one or walking round the shops for hours! I am a full time cater to disabled ds and he loves to walk (autism- loves being outside) so I rack up a fair few steps! I don't ever seem to get above 10k though and when I get close to that I am absolutely exhausted.

TippyTinkleTrousers · 26/08/2017 19:50

Purple Rainbow my iPhone is almost exactly the same as my Fitbit, as long as I wear it on my ankle (sorry I keep going on about this!) because I use both my phone and my Fitbit when I do my running.

And also used it for accuracy when testing the whole 'Fitbit on your wrist' thing.

So my phone was accurate in my pocket or on my arm (running) as my Fitbit was on my ankle. Where as the Fitbit on my wrist racked up loads of false steps.

I think 10,000 in a day of lego land seems accurate from my experience, see my above post about my 12 hour shifts.

For what it's worth, nurses can't wear anything below the elbow and all wear them on the ankle. They too don't do "35,000" or "22,00 on a walky day" and that's including the A+E nurses.

My charge 2 registers steps when I wave my arms around Grin

eurochick · 26/08/2017 19:52

About 10-12 k on a normal work day. But I'm on secondment at another office I can't walk to so I'm only managing about 8-10k. At the weekends it's usually 5-10k, depending on what we are up to.

Ecureuil · 26/08/2017 19:53

The thing is, I don't really care how accurate the step count is. I use my Fitbit to calculate my calories burned (TDEE) and that is calculated from your heart rate, not your step count. Actual number of steps walked is pretty irrelevant, the 10000 steps thing is a guideline and designed to make people more active. I know I'm active.

MrsGotobed · 26/08/2017 19:55

I recently did the 10000 steps a day for a whole month for Cancer Research.
It was really good as it made me get out and walk every day and made me think about taking longer routes to get more steps in etc.
Without doing that challenge I only average 10000 steps once or twice a week. Weekends are the worst - if it's a lazy one I'll only do about 5000 a day.

TippyTinkleTrousers · 26/08/2017 19:56

I'm not sure my Fitbit would get my heart rate from my ankle Confused

I didn't know it used the HR for calories burned.
Mine seems to take steps into account though. Maybe I'm wrong. Or perhaps it's my type of Fitbit? Maybe I have an old one.
It doesn't have numbers and pictures I know that.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 26/08/2017 19:57

I average 15-16,000 on a work day and 20,000+ at the weekend - this is mostly achieved through dog walking - I have a very active young dog who needs a LOT of exercise

PurpleTraitor · 26/08/2017 19:57

I don't have a Fitbit I only have a phone, so I only get steps counted when I'm out of the house walking around because I don't carry my bag around at home. It also doesn't count steps at work etc for the same reason. It's really bad at counting anything if you are not moving from a to b, so even if I carry my phone walking around inside a building it doesn't pick up much.

I know how far I walk because I know the actual distances involved on my gps. I'm a distances bore. I always know how far it is from place to place. My current average is 16,906. It's pulled down by days I don't pick up my phone which show things like 22 steps in the day.

Today I've done 10,677. I've been to the shops.

Ecureuil · 26/08/2017 19:58

Has yours got a heart rate monitor TippyTinkleTrousers? If not, the calories burned is more of an estimate based on your height/weight/steps.

MakChoon · 26/08/2017 19:59

I borrowed my DH's Fitbit for a few days and averaged 11k per day.

They were unusually sedentary days for me (because I hadn't walked the dogs as I normally would).

My steps were mostly from just going around the house and garden, tidying, gardening, hanging laundry etc. I work from home so I can squeeze chores in during the day.

The whole reason I borrowed his Fitbit was to show DH how much I do and to stop his nonstop gloating about his steps. Grin

Tensecondrule · 26/08/2017 20:00

Varies a lot. Aim for 10000, get a few thousand over that most days and at the weekend 20000-25000 because we do big walks. In the week if I get to the afternoon and haven't done many I will plug my iPod in and go for a walk to up my steps (easier for me as no kids to worry about)

JoeMaplin · 26/08/2017 20:00

Average 8 to 13k. Less in holidays without school runs and working less - average 7 to 10k, I have 4 kids and rarely sit down at home and have a fairly active part time job job. If I add in a proper walk of a few miles in addition to the normal stuff, nearer 16k.

TippyTinkleTrousers · 26/08/2017 20:01

I'm not sure. This is my one. How can I tell?

I bought it from my friend, so I'm a bit clueless.
