Obviously I know not everyone counts but for those that do, what is your average?

There is a lot in the news at the minute about people not being active enough so it's interesting to see what people do?

Also, how do you get your steps? Dog walking? Work? Treadmill?

I personally average around 8000 if I do the treadmill. Without the treadmill it's around 5000 which apparently is not enough?

LovingLola · 26/08/2017 21:26

Usually about 20,000. I always try for at least 12,000.

Roussette · 26/08/2017 21:26

Well done on all the posters who are 13,000 plus!

I'm gonna up my game!

e1y1 · 26/08/2017 21:28

Erm, about 12 - 6 to the car and 6 back sort of joking.

I don't count, but I would say I would average around 8000; - I do have a Smartwatch, but don't use it, but on the times I did/do, I remember an 8 to 9 thousand count.

highinthesky · 26/08/2017 21:38

Looking at the range of responses it seems I should up my game to at least 13,000. I do usually achieve this but am happy with anything over 10,000 steps outside the home.

I'm not sure I'm any fitter though. Will ponder this question further once I've finished my Bombay mix and double G&T.

BestIsWest · 26/08/2017 21:42

I do around 14000 apparently. DH does around 7000. Even if we spend the day together doing the same thing his is always about half of mine. I must move more and take smalker steps.

sirfredfredgeorge · 26/08/2017 21:42

Remember it really does depend on your stride length!

BitOutOfPractice · 26/08/2017 21:43

My average is 11,000. I have just achieved a full year of hitting my step target every single day. Quite proud of that. My Fitbit has absolutely changed my life. I am also 4 stone lighter than I was

I have a sedentary job and no commute so I have to make a really concerted effort to get to my 10,000 target.

As a PP said I am also puzzled by the posters who say they do 30,000. How? Just how?

StatisticallyChallenged · 26/08/2017 21:56

Stride length makes a big difference - I went on holiday with DH, BIL and MIL. All wearing some sort of step tracker (mainly fitbits)

IIRC, one day we compared numbers. We'd been together all day, going round the same theme park. If anything MIL walked less (sometimes sat and waited while we went on rides) but step counts were something like

Dh and BIL (both about 6ft) - 12000
Me (5ft6) - 15000
MIL (5ft1, dodgy hip so short steps) - 20000

My Charge 2 definitely doesn't overcount by any significant amount - I track pretty constantly and carefully at the moment so I would notice phantom steps. I definitely have to be moving quite significantly for it to register - rowing machine confuses it a little though!

Ollivander84 · 26/08/2017 21:59

Even on a day where I've been playing Pokemon and walked a decent distance I barely hit 8000. To hit over 10,000 on a work day I would have to walk for about 2hrs after work!

Swizzlegiggle · 26/08/2017 22:01

Between 15 and 20k when I was not heavily pregnant. Currently around 10k although it's becoming less each week. Hoping to get back on it once baby arrives!

Roussette · 26/08/2017 22:06

You set stride length surely?!

That's what I did. Unless my pedometer is unusual, I set my stride length by walking 20 steps, measuring the distance, and dividing it. Then logging that in. I am tall and have a big stride length and mine is accurate because of that. I know how far I walk.

DropZoneOne · 26/08/2017 22:09

On a busy work day, about 4000. I drive to and from work and get the lift to my floor. To get to my current target of 8000 I have to get in a half hour walk at lunch or after work.
Currently on holiday, walking from room to pool, pool to bar, room to restaurant etc and doing an easy 10000.

poorpaws · 26/08/2017 22:17

14,000 - 3 dogs, 3 hour dog walks daily.

sirfredfredgeorge · 26/08/2017 22:18

Yes Roussette but a 6' person and a 5' person will take a different number of steps to walk a mile due to their stride length, however they'll burn roughly the same amount of energy doing it (if similar weights) So a shorter person will more easily do 10,000 steps than a taller, but they'll not necessarily be doing more work.

So you shouldn't compare steps with other people really, just compare with yourself.

Albadross · 26/08/2017 22:19

We did a 5k walk today and I also cleaned and hoovered so wasn't tiring on my arse - 6500 steps.

I don't get it Confused

Albadross · 26/08/2017 22:20

Tiring = sitting

Libitina · 26/08/2017 22:23

On a work day, 12-15k on average. Today is a day off, so maybe a 100 Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/08/2017 22:30

I do about 6-7K on a 'normal' day and over 10K when I'm running. Up to 15K on an active day with a run in it.

If I didn't make an effort and was acting as I want to act, rather than how I make myself act, about 2-4K. Grin

Wallywobbles · 26/08/2017 22:34

Over the last year daily average 14000.

FetchezLaPhoque · 26/08/2017 22:44

I average 6000-7000 on work days and then either loads or very few on weekends. I've just been on holiday and averaged 13,000/day for the week. I have a Garmin which seems less rewarding than the Fitbit fireworks Grin

glitterglitters · 26/08/2017 22:48

I'm averaging 8/9k but this is up from a lot less. I'm a sahm but I also freelance from home so get stuck indoors a lot. Got a Fitbit for my birthday which has nudged me to up my activity.

Sallystyle · 26/08/2017 22:59

On a work day when I'm doing a late and not as active I do about 7000 to 8000.

When I'm not at work or I'm working early which usually includes going to the gym on those days it is anything from 10,000 to 15,000. I sometimes manage 20,000 but it's not often.

There are days where I've been lazy and only managed 2000. They don't happen too often but I do like to have a day doing very little.

Teatowelfairy · 26/08/2017 23:23

I wear a TomTom spark3. On a lazy day around 4000 to 5000 steps, on an average day, which includes getting my arse down the gym, 15000.

It's never counted thousands of steps during the night, it's usually counted anywhere between 23 & 120 steps. Saying that my youngest 2DC never fucking sleep so I'm constantly in and out of bed!

juneybean · 26/08/2017 23:25

I aim for 7500 but sometimes get just over 5k due to office job. More at weekends.

Stormyumbrella · 26/08/2017 23:31

I try to average out to around 10,000 a day over the week.
