To worry about Dh and the West Wing

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 26/08/2017 13:43

I am prepared to be told IABU in the following counts :

  1. Caring about fictional characters
  2. Talking about a TV show everyone else stopped caring about 20 years ago
  3. Reading Internet spoilers

Dh and I have been watching the West Wing for ages now and are nearing the end. I stumbled upon some spoilers that reveal that a character dies suddenly and in dramatic circumstances. I also found out that this decision came about because the actor died similarly suddenly. Dh is very emotionally attached to this character....AIBU to worry about how he's gonna take this??

If he reads internet spoilers.....he knows whats coming.

Tbh i can get very attached to fictional characters. Though its usually more in books than tv.

I have one book that makes me cry everytime one if the main characters dies. Everytime I read it, it would effect me and i always considered stopoing reading.

I havent read it in years, even though i love it. Because of a charachter death near the end.

Dont really see the issue about him talking about it. People talk about programmes i dont care abiut or watch. It doesnt irritate or worry me.

AmyGardner · 26/08/2017 13:49

YABU.

WW is the best show ever. You may as well just pile in and watch it annually for the rest of time like me.

Eemamc · 26/08/2017 13:50

That's a tricky one... I watched this series when it was first on tv. I guess it was less of a shock when the character died because I knew the actor had died anyway. If it will make it any easier, without giving too much away I hope, as obviously the actor had sadly passed away, there are quite a few episodes before I think when they are obviously not in it, just made reference to. They do a really good job of honouring the actor afterwards if that helps at all? It was such a great tv show... I'm quite envious that you're getting yo watch it all for the first time!!

Laiste · 26/08/2017 13:52

Gorgosparta it's not The Green Mile is it? I was such a snotty mess by the end of that that i could hardly see to actually read the words!

Moanyoldcow · 26/08/2017 13:53

Hence your name, AmyGardner?

You are right though - I watch Celestial Navigation almost weekly.

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 · 26/08/2017 13:53

Wow there's a blast from the past. Best TV ever.
I can understand his pain. I'd like to stay and chat but I can only converse if we're talking and walking down corridors really fast.

Did you know leaf-peeping was a thing?

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 26/08/2017 13:54

I watched TWW on a binge watch a couple of years ago. Was captivated by it. I'm sure your DH will be fine. Not saying you ABU but you are probably a worrying bit too much, but it's also lovely of you

Gorgosparta · 26/08/2017 13:56

No but i cries at the too. Its a book called black ships by Jo Graham

PoppyFleur · 26/08/2017 13:57

I love the West Wing and the death of the character in the show, although shocking, is handled well. TBH if you have both dealt with the death of Mrs L (in series 2 or 3?) which came completely out of the blue, you will cope with this.

The real tragedy is that many actors from this superb ensemble cast did not go on to star in equally outstanding series.

Writing about WW has made me realise how much I miss it, might be time for another viewing.

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 · 26/08/2017 14:02

The real tragedy is we have Donald Trump in the Whitehouse instead of Josiah Bartlett

JoshLymanJr · 26/08/2017 14:07

I was in bits even though I knew what was coming...I also tear up when Josh's father dies.

Working my way through the West Wing Weekly podcast - well worth checking out.

SapphireStrange · 26/08/2017 14:09

Oh, let him watch it, weep and love it, like everyone else.

It was so sad, that period. The actual shock and sadness on the faces of all the actors. Sad

The real tragedy is that many actors from this superb ensemble cast did not go on to star in equally outstanding series.
Yes, this. I don't know why. Did The WW make them all look like better

actors than they really are? No, Alison Janney is always ace so that can't be it.

I was thinking the same about Six Feet Under recently. Such a great ensemble but I'm not sure what any of them are doing now. Whatsisface did Dexter, I suppose, and has a stage career, but the rest of them...?

Pancakeflipper · 26/08/2017 14:11

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 - I think that every day I hear D Trump on the radio and one of his team resigning.

I think your DH will cope but go with saddened heart for a while and the series will stay with you both forever and you will wish Josh/Sam/C.J/Toby etc were still your imaginary besties and you worked with them.

Tell him to walked abruptly up and down corrridors carrying important looking docments - I find this helps me be in the WW zone.

Personally I found a bigger shocker than the death towards of the end of the WW and I still haven't gotten over it. If on my deathbed I can ask one question, I know I will ask one particular character "Why?"

The WW never leaves you...

Nanny0gg · 26/08/2017 14:13

YABU. WW is the best show ever. You may as well just pile in and watch it annually for the rest of time like me. (good username! btw)

^^This. I have literally lost count of the times I've watched it. I have the DVDs and I watch on Sky.

I cry when that character dies every single time. It is my favourite ever TV programme and the writing is so good it hasn't dated.

And anyway, he'll know who dies because they dedicate an earlier episode to that actor.

SapphireStrange · 26/08/2017 14:17

Pancake, do you mean Toby?

Nanny0gg · 26/08/2017 14:19

The real tragedy is that many actors from this superb ensemble cast did not go on to star in equally outstanding series.

So good they were thoroughly typecast? And Alison Janney will always be CJ to me...

Funnily enough, just watched two separate episodes of Law & Order SVU and Bradley Whitford and Josh Malina both played peadophiles in them

Couldn't get much further away from their WW parts

Aw thank you all. I'm glad I'm not completely insane. We have just finished series six and Dh was punching the air when they announced the Democrat ticket so I think he'll be pretty shocked. But if there's a dedication to the actor earlier on he will hopefully pick up on that.

And yes, I always rue the fact that it's Trump and his team in the White House not Jed and his team!

Go away GirlInterruptedOftenByKids spoiler Alert

SapphireStrange I do . I've never understood WHY and even at a low point in my life I wrote down possible reasons to justify his actions ( at work really bored). And read stuff on here - and I still need to ask him WHY ???

BartletForAmerica · 26/08/2017 14:23

Resurrecting an old namechange for this thread!

We were latecomers to TWW and watched them all for the first time a few years ago. DH doesn't look for spoilers so it came as a complete shock to him.

This podcast is great and is best listened to after the 'homework' of watching the episode before. They also don't discuss anything that happens in future episodes so the episodes are pretty spoiler-free.

You could start on the West Wing Weekly podcast if you want to get more WW fixes. It takes a bit of getting into and can be quite self-indulgent at times (but with good cause it's hosted by a mega fan and Joshua Malina) but they have had some cracking guests on (including Justin Trudeau a couple of weeks ago!) and it gives some amazing behind the scenes insights as to what it was like working on the show. They regularly have cast and crew on and email Sorkin if they've got specific questions about the writing/plot.

orlantina · 26/08/2017 14:29

I love the West Wing.

Can we show some favourite clips?

I have an FBI file?

Mrscropley · 26/08/2017 14:32

Was it only me who thought this was a stealth boast??

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 26/08/2017 14:37

Errr....what would I be boasting about? Being several years behind the curve or being weak minded enough to read spoilers? ?
