To worry about Dh and the West Wing

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 26/08/2017 13:43

I am prepared to be told IABU in the following counts :

  1. Caring about fictional characters
  2. Talking about a TV show everyone else stopped caring about 20 years ago
  3. Reading Internet spoilers

Dh and I have been watching the West Wing for ages now and are nearing the end. I stumbled upon some spoilers that reveal that a character dies suddenly and in dramatic circumstances. I also found out that this decision came about because the actor died similarly suddenly. Dh is very emotionally attached to this character....AIBU to worry about how he's gonna take this??

A bit?! Loved him! Also loved Sam! Cried all the way through the opening credits when we sat down to watch the final episode.

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 27/08/2017 08:17

Sam was written out in a really odd way. They just never even said whether he lost the election (assume he did!)

I rewatched my box set a few months ago and sobbed when CJ's secret service guy was killed .. they play Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and it just makes me cry so much 😳 best TV series I've ever seen.

mikado1 · 27/08/2017 08:27

Also loved newsroom but why was it so short-lived?

mikado1 · 27/08/2017 08:29

Oh yes minicooper. Definitely going to watch this again soon.

Hassled · 27/08/2017 08:37

My people! I've watched it so many times - and still feel bereft when it's the last episode. All 4 DCs have sat through it and loved it - in fact all 4 at some stage seem to have given "working in the West Wing" serious consideration as a career option, despite not living in the US or being American.

There are some FB groups of like-minded WW obsessives - Wit and Wisdom of the West Wing 2.0 is one of them. Once you're in, you'll never get out and then every time you go on FB you'll end up re-watching clips or considering things like Margaret's very brief pregnancy or how great Ainsley Haines was.

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 · 27/08/2017 08:38

No Sam was elected to the House.

MrsFezziwig · 27/08/2017 08:43

My favourite series ever! There's a podcast? And a FB group? senses opportunity for wasting even more time on the internet
Elizabeth Moss hasn't done too badly for herself.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/08/2017 08:45

I'm sure we find out at some point that he lost, for reasons that are spoilery.

Hassled · 27/08/2017 08:46

The podcast is fantastic - some of the podcasts last much longer than the episode they're actually dissecting lasted. West Wing Weekly.

JoshLymanJr · 27/08/2017 08:46

There's a podcast?

There is, and it's brilliant. Joshua Malina (Will Bailey) hosts it and they have lots of cast and crew guests on. They're about halfway through series 3 at the moment.

JoshLymanJr · 27/08/2017 08:51

Just thinking about my list of favourite WW episodes and I think it would go like this:

17 People
Take This Sabbath Day
Two Cathedrals
In the Shadow of Two Gunmen (both parts)
The Supremes
Noel
Galileo

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 · 27/08/2017 08:58

My favourite crush was actually the character of Bruno Gianelli. For those watching the early series, you have this joy to come. However brilliant the likes of Josh, Leo, CJ, Sam were ...when it came to election campaigns- they brought in this amazing expert who would just order them about in his fantastic Noo Yawk Italian accent....hmmmmmn

Fiderer · 27/08/2017 09:01

The irony! I have AIBU hidden but come in to find & read the Trump threads. And today find a TWW thread Grin

NataliaOsipova · 27/08/2017 09:04

Sam was elected to the House.

I thought he lost that Orange County election (campaign cockups galore). There was some mention of his having been promoted to Senior Counsel (when they wrote Rob Lowe out).....and then he turned up again in the final season when Josh went over to persuade him to come and work with him again.

Feebeela · 27/08/2017 09:06

West Wing is fantastic TV and sadly as relevant now as it was almost 20 years ago.

A friend who is a super fan recommended listening to The West Wing Weekly podcast hosted by Josh Malina. He is joined by various guests (politicians and actors from the show) to discuss each episode in depth for an hour. It's very interesting and entertaining as they really unpick the writing, acting and political climate of each episode. Well worth a listen!

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 27/08/2017 09:07

wetsthefinger everyone does. Everyone.

So happy to have found this thread. Can we keep it going forever to support each other? DH and I binge watched TWW. Felt utterly bereft when it ended. In fact, I was in a panic about it ending with three seasons still to go. I miss those characters so much.
Most of the characters have twitter profiles and I've started following them. I am that sad...

Hassled · 27/08/2017 09:10

Yes, Sam was back being a lawyer when Josh went to get him back in Season 7, wasn't he? Or at least he was in a meeting room that looked a lot like the first meeting room when he was practicing dodgy shipping law.

dontslouchdarling · 27/08/2017 09:13

I think Toby' s final storyline was the culmination of all the times previously when Bartlet disappointed him by either taking a morally dubious decision or was not radical enough. Bartlet says to him that he's not surprised by the bad thing he does as he (Toby) has always thought he had a better moral compass than Bartlet.

That's my take on it. Not that I'm massively overinvested in the WW or anything....

Have to say not a huge fan of Will or Kate. Best episode with Will is hi. trying to get the Interns to come up with a ad for clean fuel.

Feebeela · 27/08/2017 09:13

Loved Studio 60, Six Feet Under, The Wire and Carnavale too.

What other series have you watched that have rocked your world like TWW? We're watchin Breaking Bad atm. We're enjoying it but it hasn't grabbed me.

mikado1 · 27/08/2017 09:16

Feebella six feet under followed ww here. Best. Finale. Ever

dontslouchdarling · 27/08/2017 09:16

I've been re-watching ER recently. Absolutely fantastic. Easy to forget how ground-breaking it was at the time.

Fiderer · 27/08/2017 09:17

Hassled , yes Sam was, justifying it to Josh by mentioning Good Things he'd got the law firm to do.

I liked the chess scene with him & Jed where it's fairly clear Jed expected him to run for & become president one day. I had to give a chess-related speech a few years ago. I borrowed heavily from Jed.

A new thread would be fun, maybe in Telly Addicts rather than AIBU? As there is nothing UR about TWW. And it won't show up on my TIO after the recent changes

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 · 27/08/2017 09:28

Ah I stand corrected on Sam. It interesting isn't it that TWW hooked the imagination when that dimwit Baby Bush was in the White House. We watched Jed Bartlett with longing thinking if only....

Now that we have The Donald irl our only hope is to introduce a new generation to TWW. Keep hope alive

NataliaOsipova · 27/08/2017 09:30

Now that we have The Donald irl our only hope is to introduce a new generation to TWW. Keep hope alive

I hadn't thought of it in those terms, but I think you're absolutely right.....
