To worry about Dh and the West Wing

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 26/08/2017 13:43

I am prepared to be told IABU in the following counts :

  1. Caring about fictional characters
  2. Talking about a TV show everyone else stopped caring about 20 years ago
  3. Reading Internet spoilers

Dh and I have been watching the West Wing for ages now and are nearing the end. I stumbled upon some spoilers that reveal that a character dies suddenly and in dramatic circumstances. I also found out that this decision came about because the actor died similarly suddenly. Dh is very emotionally attached to this character....AIBU to worry about how he's gonna take this??

This might make some people very happy indeed - Richard Schiff talks about a reboot possibility.

Hassled · 27/08/2017 12:23

Sorry - you have to scroll down a bit - it's the second clip.

SenecaFalls · 27/08/2017 14:28

I don't know whether you get Samantha Bee in the UK, but here is a clip of Allison Janney doing CJ on Samantha's special Not the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Is there not a theory that Toby was taking the fall for someone else i.e. CJ?

SapphireStrange · 27/08/2017 15:06

Yes, I thought this was the case, although I haven't actually watched the show in so long I couldn't offer any evidence to back myself up.

Toby was my WW crush. Quite fancied Jason Isaacs, too, for the first and so far last time (sorry Jason, I know that's a blow).

JoshLymanJr · 27/08/2017 15:16

There's a great anecdote that when Bradley Whitford wrote an episode he pranked Joshua Malina by deliberately giving Will Bailey the line "I can't act! I'm a terrible actor!"

CityBoy1984 · 27/08/2017 15:22

@GirlInterruptedOftenByKids

No. YABU for watching a show that tanked after Aaron Sorkin stopped writing it (end of S4, just FYI) instead of watching House of Cards.

KimchiLaLa · 27/08/2017 15:28

To be honest this is the one show I get massively invested in. I cry at certain episodes - for example two cathedrals. Seasons 1-2 were the best though. Frankly josh Malina and that chick who played Kate ruin it for me, there was no chemistry between the "new" cast.

CaveMum · 27/08/2017 16:02

I'm on Mat leave and am rewatching for the eleventy-billionth time Grin Currently on Season 5.

Favourite episode definitely The Supremes. Or maybe Two Cathedrals. Wink

Oh and YABU, as others have said the death is sad but it's so well handled. Personally I cried more when Simon (Secret Service guy) died and when Mrs L talked about her so s dying in Vietnam Sad

CaveMum · 27/08/2017 16:05

Show Mandy disappears at the end of Season 1. She's in the last episode, but come Ep1 of Season 2 is gone and no one even mentions her again Grin

Piffpaffpoff · 27/08/2017 16:24

"I miss my boys". Oh Mrs L Sad

I bought all the DVD box sets when they came out each time, and binged them. I didn't know anyone else who watched it at the time, which amazed me. I felt so sad when I started S7 knowing I was getting to the end (but was FURIOUS when a TV guide revealed the election result by printing a spoiler photo which I just saw by accident - with text you can skim past, but not a obvious big picture!)

Its rerunning on Sky Atlantic atm, and I happened to turn over the other day when CJ (my hero) was doing the bit about how the women of Qumar walk around with their dead babies strapped to them because they can't put them down. I'm not a mum, but eve that hit hard (and it is true in many parts of the 3rd world)

ShotsFired · 27/08/2017 16:42

@AmyGardner does the tip of your nose also wiggle when you talk like hers does? Grin

Couldn't unsee it after I saw it....

CaveMum · 27/08/2017 16:43

CJ has many excellent speeches/rants Grin

Tumblethumps · 27/08/2017 17:13

I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I had you here. I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important 'cause we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: Touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you? One last thing: While you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tight-Ass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits.*

It's frequently quoted but my goodness, it makes me stand and applaud every bloody time!

orlantina · 27/08/2017 17:25

I do wonder what Trump thinks of the West Wing...

EekThreek · 27/08/2017 18:12

@CaveMum that's the highlight of my maternity leaves as well, I'd have 10+ babies just so I can binge watch WW!

That speech is one of my favourite Tv moments @Tumblethumps

I'm always referring to Big Block of Cheese day if someone tells me something completely bizarre!

Fiderer · 27/08/2017 18:13

Tumble I haven't managed to get my children to watch more than a few episodes of TWW but I have shown my daughter that clip a couple of times.

Which she used in an argument with a younger version of Jenna Jacobs in a Religion/Ethics class. She admitted she got confused about the Biblical names (discussion was in German) but she made her point.

CaveMum · 27/08/2017 18:15

It would go WAAAAY over his head Orlantina

EATmum · 27/08/2017 18:37

My favourite - one of my favourite - episodes is Isaac and Isiah. So want to go and start again but my teenage DDs are v reluctant.

LivingInMidnight · 27/08/2017 19:02

I often skip that one EAT because of the end of season 2 and also because it's sort of crowbarred in at the beginning of s3.

Thanks to this thread I finally sorted out switching to US netflix again. I'm sure the service I'm using will get blocked quickly though.

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 27/08/2017 19:06

Straycat I LOVE that Alison Janney clip. Thank you :)

"He was fat back cat cool like a Friday afternoon martini, chillin' at a quarter after 5. Twist of lime, Coke on the side. The brother loved the high life. Had a Ph.D. in street stride. They called him 'The Jackal'.

LittleBearPad · 27/08/2017 19:49

God I loved TWW.

DH and I are watching - him for the first time. We've lost impetus but we need to get going again. So many amazing bits to watch.

I managed to burn out the memory card or something of my iMac binge watching west wing.
