To worry about Dh and the West Wing

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 26/08/2017 13:43

I am prepared to be told IABU in the following counts :

  1. Caring about fictional characters
  2. Talking about a TV show everyone else stopped caring about 20 years ago
  3. Reading Internet spoilers

Dh and I have been watching the West Wing for ages now and are nearing the end. I stumbled upon some spoilers that reveal that a character dies suddenly and in dramatic circumstances. I also found out that this decision came about because the actor died similarly suddenly. Dh is very emotionally attached to this character....AIBU to worry about how he's gonna take this??

And back then no-one knew the acronym POTUS

JoshLymanJr · 26/08/2017 21:14

"...and the walls came tumbling down. I'm fine, Toby, thanks for asking."

wtffgs · 26/08/2017 21:23

TWW is wonderful even the dodgy eps

That death is so sad but the actor was clearly loved. Others, Ron Silver and Roger Rees have died subsequently Sad

TWWW is my salvation in these Trump-infested times!

TWWW is my salvation in these Trump-infested times!

We thought it was wish-fulfilment in the Bush era - little did we know...

ChoccyJules · 26/08/2017 21:33

A certain dishy rockstar babysitting on the campaign bus towards the end was an extra bonus as I recall Grinw

ChoccyJules · 26/08/2017 21:34

w?

OnlyRose · 26/08/2017 21:42

Two Cathedrals is my favourite episode as well, AngryBird.
I am definitely due a rewatch. Perhaps I'll start watching TWW instead of the news...
Did anyone else used to read the episode recaps on Television Without Pity? I loved them almost as much as the episodes themselves.

Yes! :)

DH and I love The West Wing - it is our favourite thing when long enough has passed that we can start it all over again like new.
It is more relevant now when the dangerous bastard Trump, who has not a gram of integrity or any moral code, is POTUS, than at any point since it was made.
He may react very badly to the character's death. DH cries every time. I am more hard-hearted.

Brownsauceandsausages · 26/08/2017 21:56

Thanks for the info on how to access it. It's going to have to be DVDs I think. Agree they seem like a terrible faddle though.

GrouchyKiwi · 26/08/2017 22:16

I never much liked the character who passes away, but that episode did make me cry.

TWW is my favourite ever show. I need to do a proper rewatch but DH insists on watching with me so it takes forever. Might just do it without him.

Celestial Navigation is such a fun episode. I also love Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc, and the one where we're introduced to Ainsley. (I wish she stayed on the show longer.)

bluechameleon · 26/08/2017 23:01

I'm currently rewatching for the nth time - it's on Sky Atlantic. I do have them all on DVD but as pps have said, it's too much effort to watch DVDs now. I started watching halfway through series 5 and am now almost at the end but it cycles back round so I have the first few episodes of series one waiting for me. I never get bored of it and find new things to enjoy every time I watch. Some of my favourite episodes are the documentary about CJ, the Stackhouse Filibuster and the ones at the beginning of series two when we get the backstory about the early days.

GirlInterruptedOftenByKids · 26/08/2017 23:05

I really enjoyed "A Good Day" - Santos leads a senator sleepover, Toby has pizza with kids, Kate concentrates on border disputes with Canada. Classic WW - some serious issues (stem cells) mixed in with great comedy moments.

And we're watching it all on DVD. Old school!

I love it so so much and am definitely due another rewatch.
My understanding is that Richard Schiff was very unhappy with Tobys storyline because he like the rest of us knew it didn't fit. I can't wait till The West Wing Weekly gets to those episodes (although I'm also already dreading the time when that's over too).
I loved Studio 60 and just wish it'd been given longer :(

SenecaFalls · 26/08/2017 23:19

I have never seen Newsroom so started that this afternoon. There goes my weekend and plans to reorganize my kitchen cupboards.

Also watched the WW episode where Bartlet gives Charlie the knife set. Lovely.

HerculesMulligan · 26/08/2017 23:26

Another wing nut here (and yo to you, @AlexanderHamilton). I serve at the pleasure of President Bartlet.

AlexanderHamilton · 26/08/2017 23:31

I serve at the pleasure of the President.

(There's a million things I haven't done but just you wait)

MuddlingMackem · 26/08/2017 23:42

I'd love to do a WW rewatch, but it's not currently on Sky Box Sets, one of the channels has been showing it daily but I couldn't have kept up with that.

GrouchyKiwi, Ainsley was my favourite character, and I thought she and Sam has great chemistry, I loved their scenes together.

Anyone else watched Designated Survivor on Netflix and got the WW vibe from it? Even though it's a completely different premise and different creative team, for me it felt like coming back to the West Wing after a ten or fifteen year gap.

AlexanderHamilton · 26/08/2017 23:49

Yes. We are desperately awaiting the next series of Designated Survivor.

Nanny0gg · 26/08/2017 23:59

Anyone else think that Bartlett could be a bit of a bully sometimes? Like when he made Zoey do things she didn't want, or the time he kept Josh listen to him droning on about National Parks, when he wanted to go home to bed as he had to be back in four hours?

WetsTheFinger · 27/08/2017 00:06

YABU

The West Wing is brilliant. I still mourn it. Bartlett For President, always.

McSleepy · 27/08/2017 01:01

I have found my people! We are huge WW fans and cannot count how many times we have watched it on DVD (and also a couple of episodes a week on Sky Atlantic when time allows). We first watched season 1 on rented box set from Blockbuster (showing my age) and had a mad dash to the store to return it and hire season 2 just before closing time.

Toby's storyline felt like he'd been suspended/written out for a reason. It was very strange. Although I do feel he worked best with Sam and was just angry when working with Will/Joshua Melina. But he did have great chemistry with CJ (who is probably my all time favourite character).

Also just binge watched Designated Survivor on Netflix and really looking forward to season 2. Much cheesier than WW but really liked it.

Loved Studio 60. Such a shame the end was rushed and it wasn't given a second season. The Newsroom was also great but lacking something that I can't put my finger on.

Dule Hill has recently turned up in Suits - love seeing him again.

LetBartletBeBartlet · 27/08/2017 01:15

TWW is just so comforting to binge watch.

Must see if I can find it. An autumn rewatch would be splendid.

WetsTheFinger · 27/08/2017 01:18

Anyone else fancy Josh a bit? Blush
