can you think of the last show that actually made you laugh out loud?

OP posts:
msrisotto · 26/08/2017 08:34

Atypical on Netflix had me proper laughing the other day. Same with task master, brilliant stuff.

msrisotto · 26/08/2017 08:34

Ooh yes lovesick was great too

msrisotto · 26/08/2017 08:36

Oh my god how did I forget Jane the virgin and crazy ex girlfriend!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 26/08/2017 08:47

Crazy ex-girlfriend Is brilliant! So is Kimmy Schmidt. I enjoyed Atypical but kept crying because ds is a newly teen Atypical boy so it's a bit raw Blush

guinnessgirl · 26/08/2017 09:00

The Last Leg gets me every single time. Brilliant stuff, always on point.

JumpingJoey · 26/08/2017 09:11

Him and Her
The Job Lot

lesmcqueen · 26/08/2017 09:26

Chewing Gum

SilverySurfer · 26/08/2017 09:29

I agree OP, YANBU, it has been decades since I last watched something funny on TV. I think current 'comedy' is absolutely dire and totally unfunny.

EdmundCleverClogs · 26/08/2017 09:35

Brooklyn 99

South Park

Archer

Raised by Wolves

What about radio shows?

Bleak Expectations (I've listened to this on repeat and still find it hilarious)

Cabin Pressure

Clare in the Community (the first four series)

Old Harry's Game

Dead Ringers

The Now Show

bigmouthstrikesagain · 26/08/2017 09:45

Have you ever thought it's not them it's you? Children and young people laugh more. There are programmes I remember as funny that just aren't on repeat viewing decades later, even now I don't always laugh out loud like I did when I was younger.

I think as we get older we get grouchier and more serious and less ready to laugh, so that colours the way we experience things that are meant to make us laugh. Some programmes are made with a specific younger audience in mind that may not be so funny to us over 40s. I don't know, but I really don't think 20-30 years ago was some comedy golden age. I have plenty of dire sit coms in my recollections and then the Mary Whitehouse Experience (which is not as good on repeat viewing).... Then a lot of bobbins about comedy as the new rock n roll!

There are always going to be talented funny people around and hopefully resources to enable them to make funny programmes.

mrsnec · 26/08/2017 09:45

And yes to radio shows and podcasts. I'm sorry I haven't a clue is funny sometimes.

HappydaysArehere · 26/08/2017 09:52

Laughs out loud this week when Sky Arts showed a Buster Keaton film called The Week. Also Only Fools and Horses and Outnumbered. Don't get Miranda at all. Is that falling about supposed to be funny?

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 26/08/2017 09:55

I agree there's not much on right now. I think stuff like Miranda and Mrs Brown's Boys is absolutely awful and there's far too much of it.

However, if you dig a bit deeper, there has recently been some excellent comedies including:

Fleabag
Inside number 9
Catastrophe
Master of None (Netflix)
Transparent (US)

Upcoming series:
New series of The League of Gentlemen
Back - from the writers of Peepshow

PoppyPopcorn · 26/08/2017 09:55

The episode of Car Share when they went to the safari park. DH and I were in bits.

RonSwansonsMoustache · 26/08/2017 10:00

I also think TV is different these days. So many people don't watch it live and rely on Netflix and Prime, so traditional sitcoms that come out every week at 9pm just aren't that popular anymore.

I can't remember the last time I found a show I was happy to stay home and watch, but as a kid I remember being really excited for new episodes of Top Gear or Mock the Week to the extent I would plan my evenings around them!

VioletCharlotte · 26/08/2017 10:01

Miranda always makes me laugh til I cry. But there's not that many funny shows on nowadays.

NormaSmuff · 26/08/2017 10:03

Agree, Radio 4 has some great comedy programmes.
Friday Night Dinner I just watched the other night, which had me laughing.

MumBod · 26/08/2017 10:23

The last time I cried laughing at anything new was the episode of Car Share when they accidentally brought the monkey home from the zoo.

Other than that, IT Crowd and Father Ted. No matter how many times I watch Roy thinking he's dying at Denholm's funeral, I nearly wee myself Grin

ethelfleda · 26/08/2017 10:54

Has anyone mentioned Dave Gorman - modern life is goodish??
I think he is brilliant.

Quimby · 26/08/2017 11:09

This country and people just do nothing are fantastic, can't believe I forgot them

Also
Archer
The league

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 26/08/2017 11:26

Radio 4 Extra recently repeated Mary Whitehorse Experience, which I loved at the time and I was hugely disappointed by how shit it was - like the Now Show on a particularly poor week.

Round The Horne OTOH hasn't aged a day. What's particularly interesting is the disparity between camp humour written/performed by gay men like RTH and Monty Python which has aged well, and gay jokes in comedies by straight men like the Goodies and Sorry I'll Read That Again, which make my toes curl up so hard they nearly fall off. Likewise the Goon Show still gets away with most of its horrendous race jokes because Ray Ellington was a valued member of the team and in on the joke. Shows with white cast members in blackface, not so much.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 26/08/2017 12:47

I can't remember the last time I had a proper belly laugh at something I watched on television
Me neither. All the things that people are "crying" over on here leave me cold, yet I find loads of random things funny so I'm definitely capable of laughing and do numerous times each day. Miranda, Mrs Browns boys, Victoria Wood, Car Share, Peter Kay, Only Fools, all the usual popular "funny people" I just don't get. I like Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, but generally I find sitcoms awful. Last time I properly laughed was watching YouTube videos of a , Marcus Brigstocke and his , and when in Family Guy.

Harry Hill's (often surreal) commentary on You've Been Framed makes me cry with laughter sometimes
"Dirty boy!" LOL.

Magicpaintbrush · 26/08/2017 13:00

Big School is properly funny - why didn't the bbc continue with it (idiots!!!) Watch this link and you will see why......

Also the episode of Car Share with the monkey in the car is a hoot.

But genuine belly laughs are rare these days I agree.

Alittlepotofrosie · 26/08/2017 13:11

Taskmaster is brilliant. Best thing on tv.

Also like would i lie to you.

bluesbaby · 26/08/2017 13:20

Fleabag Grin That was brilliant!

I was also pretty late to the Cuckoo party, but that was a good sitcom.
