can you think of the last show that actually made you laugh out loud?

OP posts:
IamEarthymama · 26/08/2017 02:04

Car Share and Peter Kay's Comedy Shuffle recently.
Jane the Virgin is wonderful.
Last weekend I was roaring with laughter listening to David Sedaris on R4 iplayer. Really clever and hilarious.

I remember my neice watching a rerun of Two Ronnies aged 10; she was honestly rolling around.
As we were, watching her delight in 4 candles!!

GrabbyMcGrabby · 26/08/2017 02:15

I know it's not TV, but Radio 4extra comedy hour is great. Quite often listen at bedtime. Find it stress relieving. Unless something shit is on.

Cric · 26/08/2017 02:25

HIGNFY always makes me laugh. My husband and I always laugh out loud when we watch cuckoo, can't wait for the next series!

quercuscircus · 26/08/2017 05:13

Yes to Miranda and Car Share - brilliant :) Peter Kaye and Miranda Hart shoud write together - the outcome could be extraordinary!

But I is miss regular dramas that are also a bit funny. Sort of like Doc Martin ought to be but I never liked it/ got it. Needs to be funny but not contrived - difficult to achieve I imagine. Anyone remember "All Quiet on the Preston Front"? I thought that had much more to give. Interesting character that weren't overly cliched or exagerated.

Also miss This Life and Teachers - funny and serious. Ackley Bridge tries to capture those shows I think and has the odd moment, but trips over itself too much trying to be explanantory or worthy or something.

To many 'laughs' have become laughing at people eg Big Brother, Gogglebox, X Factor etc. Or the programmes are very chidlish/ based on adults who never grow up.

Oh, yes AnneGrommit! I loved The Detectorists - fantastic. So subtle and warm and just funny! More like that please :)

Remember the Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield shows too? Jazz? Nice :) Love them and I think we need them back!

ZaraW · 26/08/2017 06:03

Brooklyn 99 I love it. Crazy Ex girlfriend is pretty good too.

fizzytonicplease · 26/08/2017 06:03

Yes catastrophe is amazing and constantly telling people to watch it.

8/10 cats the normal show and when they do count down.

TizzyDongue · 26/08/2017 06:03

Yes it is subjective. Neither clip the OP linked I found funny - I may have when it was first on - though not sure if I did to be honest. A lot of the 90s programme a pp posted I didn't like - Mary Whitehouse Experience would have made me laugh back then though, Bob Mortimer and Whatshisface never did!!!

Looking back on the older stuff especially the 70s so much just isn't funny - racial and sexual stereotyping, foreigners and homosexuality being the joke. Mrs Brown's Boys is 'old style' in my opinion - in the same category as Benny Hill: just not funny to me.

Some of the older stuff is still funny though - Father Ted doesn't fail me. One Foot in thr Grave, Some of Fools and Horses (not all though)

A lot of the stuff I'm watching at the moment it quite serious/dark I've just realised!! Last thing I watch where i laughed was Frankie and Grace (or is it Grace and Frankie?) and also Uncle. Raised by Wolves is another and there was another programme Fleabag i think it was called.

Mind you there's bits of the noncomedies like Game of Thrones that make me laugh too.

Inkanta · 26/08/2017 06:40

I agree OP - I was thinking the same. Where are the comedians and entertainment programmes that used to help us normalise and come to terms with developments going on in the world and people. I blame the internet and social media that is too harsh and surely must put off potential entertainers.

Pigface1 · 26/08/2017 06:50

The Thick Of It makes me howl.

FunkinEll · 26/08/2017 06:52

The American version of Impractical Jokers is one of the few that get me rolling around crying with laughter and even then only some of the episodes. Skoopsy Patatas is the best ever.

mrsnec · 26/08/2017 06:54

Depending on who is on the panel cats does countdown can be funny sometimes.

RonSwansonsMoustache · 26/08/2017 07:05

Friday Night Dinner, Parks and Recreation and old re-runs of Friends are my go-to.

TathitiPete · 26/08/2017 07:18

I think the reason, or part of it, that sitcoms are a dying breed is that it's very difficult to write jokes that someone won't find offensive.

I watch Frasier a lot, I love it, think it's the pinnacle of sitcom, but I regularly spot humour that I think wouldn't fly these days. I can picture young people on 'It Was Alright In The 90s' watching a scene or two with their mouths open, amazed that the show got away with gay jokes, transgender jokes, skinny-shaming, a couple of fat shaming instances and some Jewish stereotyping.

Walnutwhiplash · 26/08/2017 07:29

also her last programme, 3 girls sharing a flat
Pulling? That was ace. I loved the first series of Catastrophe but lost interest mid-way through the second.
there were a couple of series of a programme where famous women in history were seen in a therapist's room
Psychb@tches? That was fab. Sam Spiro is amazing.
Loved Crashing (very 'captures the zeitgeist'-y) but thought Fleabag was a bit meh (Can't Cope, Won't Cope - terrible title - covers similar ground but does it better imho). The Windsors is outrageous and hilarious. Agree with pp that Mum was brilliant. Some great comedy on R4 too.

Plentyoffishnets · 26/08/2017 07:39

Agree with 8/10 cats does countdown, parks and recreation and the Windsor's.
The mash report on BBC 2 is also very very funny

Flyingflipflop · 26/08/2017 07:51

I have to say two recent ones. The Detectorists I thought was brilliant. Also Quacks on BBC2 on Tuesdays. Fantastic.

CaptainBrickbeard · 26/08/2017 07:55

Just adding my agreement to the Parks & Recreation recommendations! It's gentle and sweet and absolutely hilarious 😂

Cric · 26/08/2017 07:56

I can't believe no one else has said cuckoo!

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 26/08/2017 08:00

What I've seen of the Windsors is funny. Murder in Successville v funny although the format means it's necessarily patchy and they over-rely on smut as a comedy safety net.

Taskmaster stands out for proper laughs. Dave Gorman also good, but more smile humour.

Strictly Come Dancing often funny although the scripted comedy bits can be excruciating. Ed Balls throwing himself into Gangnam Style was legitimately hilarious. Michael Vaughan doing the jive always cheers me up.

And probably my favourite joke I've seen on TV this year was Davos correcting Jon's grammar on GOT.

We've recorded Quacks but not watched it yet - high hopes.

PinkyBlunder · 26/08/2017 08:06

I've been watching Quacks on BBC2 and I've been in pain laughing!!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 26/08/2017 08:08

Quacks is very good, I loved the episode with Dickens!

Catastrophe, Toast of London, Horrible Histories, Fleabag all pretty recent and very funny.

There is a series Netflix has revived called Mystery Science Theatre 3000 that I have been watching with my kids very funny. The way programmes are commissioned/ Funded is being revolutionised by On Demand services and internet access so I think that could be very good for comedy.

Missrubyring · 26/08/2017 08:10

Agree with everyone that said Father Ted, The Last Leg, Green Wing and Brooklyn 99. Big Bang Theory used to be but it's kind of just faded into not being funny really.
Another good one that's not really a comedy but I find funny is Amazon's Lucifer, his quirkiness is brilliant. Grin

saoirse31 · 26/08/2017 08:12

Modern Family, latest series.

Oblomov17 · 26/08/2017 08:19

I agree.
Have watched lots of old stuff that I used to like: Fast show:Ted and Ralph.
Bottom
Harry Enfield
Phoenix nights

Julia Davis - Camping was funny.

Now, I can't even think of anything I've watched that was THAT funny.

This is actually quite worrying, don't you think?

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 26/08/2017 08:31

Current series making me laugh are Master of None, OITNB, Love, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Santa Clarita Diet, The Detectorists, People Just Do Nothing, Friends From College, Grace and Frankie, Ru Paul's Drag Race, Jane The Virgin, Glow.

I think it is unfair to say it has to be "something that is on now" as most people now watch a lot of things on demand or via a service such as Netflix so they may be watching older series but only just discovering them. It's a different time, we aren't really a sit down and all get entertained at the same time nation anymore.
May I suggest some comedies that have made me laugh so to the point of tears:
Getting On
Lead Balloon
Lovesick
Him & Her
The Thick of It
Alan Partridge
WA1
Extras
Coupling
Peep Show
Gavin & Stacey
Early Doors
Parks and Rec
Episodes
Gary Tank Commander
The Trip
Fresh Meat
Psychoville

I also find most reality shows hilarious. They arent intended as comedies but they make me cry with laughter.
