AIBU to sack cleaner after Dettol spillage and she didn't tell me???

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 20:42

We have just got home after being away and our cleaner came yesterday.
She has spilled what seems to be an entire bottle of Dettol in the kids room, washed it, left it and didn't tell us.
Why it was being used in there I'm not sure, I think more likely she was carrying it and dropped it.
We got back, all windows shut and a boiling hot day today as could smell the Dettol stink as soon as we opened the front door.
I texted and asked and she said yes she has spilled in in our child's room but washed it so no stain and went home.
Surely the fumes are dangerous from Dettol?
We've opened the window and moved her in with us for tonight but how on earth do you get the smell out?
It absolutely stinks.
Aibu to sack her?

Oooh the problems of the middle class 🙄

Get over it.

Mammysin · 25/08/2017 21:07

I can't believe your neighbour was so negligent as to fail to report the fumes to you! You should move - all problems sorted then ...

junebirthdaygirl · 25/08/2017 21:08

Would putting a cut up onion in the room help. It soaks up some smells but not sure about dettol.
Op l hope you dont get sacked in work the first time hou make a mistake.

Almostthere15 · 25/08/2017 21:08

I think you're massively overreacting. It must have been stressy to come home to the smell but it was an accident. She cleaned it up. If we all got sacked eveytime we made a tiny mistake, and especially after we'd fixed it then noone would have a job and everyone would spend their lives in employment tribunals!

KittyVonCatsington · 25/08/2017 21:08

said inhaling it can be toxic! where did it say that, OP?

Doomhutch · 25/08/2017 21:08

But WHY would she have told you? If as you accept the smell wasn't particularly strong when she cleaned it up?

I get that it's unpleasant, but stop trying to make it a hanging offense and don't come on AIBU if you are convinced you not Use. You are. Everyone's told you.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 25/08/2017 21:08

I think you should sack your cats too.

They could've easy texted you with their little toe beans and said, "Look here, the cleaner spilt Dettol. It's toxic, you know? This really isn't on."

Everyone has failed you today. Everyone.

Chestervase1 · 25/08/2017 21:08

I prefer Dettol to Chanel No 5

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 21:09

She brings her own products
For what it's worth the neighbour generally uses the back gate as access to our house so if she did that and came in via the kitchen she may not have smelt it as isn't a direct passage upstairs whereas from the front it is.
Also she's an elderly lady, she may not have clicked there was an issue just that it smelt VERY clean!
I just knew as soon as I smelt it that it was Dettol and worried about the cats and then after looking into it more found inhalation of it is also toxic to humans! So then www very annoyed with her for not giving me the heads up.

Sorry, cross post your neighbour was on cat food duty. Elderly people are known to lose their sense of smell, do it's likely she didn't notice.
I sleep with my windows open all year round, have a word with your self saying it's cold overnight.

Anasnake · 25/08/2017 21:09

'I'm going to sack you because you knocked over some dettol and then cleaned it up' Hmm

LuluJakey1 · 25/08/2017 21:09

Be very careful if you have pets. Dettol is dangerous to cats, even very diluted. It can also damage furnishings and plastic.

mummymummums · 25/08/2017 21:10

In the nicest possible way I think you need to get a grip. That poor woman!

acornsandnuts · 25/08/2017 21:10

Arrrhggggg again YABU.

Doomhutch · 25/08/2017 21:11

I think the cats should sack you for not telling your cleaner to not use Dettol if you knew it was hazardous to them.

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 21:11

It was clearly tipped over neat and she hasn't diluted it by washing the entire carpet or anything as you can smell exactly where it was compared to the rest of the carpet. She could have steam cleaned it which would have at least lifted some of it.
The people asking about the Dettol haven't read my reply which stated she brings her own products. I've never bought Dettol as know it's dangerous to cats.

Disn3yN3rd · 25/08/2017 21:11

But you said you were only worried about the cats after you read up about it but you last post makes it seem you were worried about the cats before you you read up on dettol?

Also someone coming in three times a day didn't smell this overpowering smell of dettol? The same smell you have said "choked" you as you came in the door?

To be honest I think you are looking for a reason to sack this cleaner.

Giraffey1 · 25/08/2017 21:12

I feel a bit sorry for your cleaner. She had an accident, spilt some Dettol and cleaned up the mess. She probably thought no more about it. I would have had no idea about the smell and I bet she didn't either.

Take a deep breath (not in child's bedroom, obviously!!!) and move on.

toldmywrath · 25/08/2017 21:12

Sorry OP, my last sentence was unduly nasty. But I do think you're being unreasonable. No doubt you're worried about the cats, do they have a cat flap or did the neighbour sort the litter tray, too?

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 21:12

This link shows it is toxic " when unintentionally breathed in "

Firefries · 25/08/2017 21:13

I want my house to smell of dettol. Sorry OP but if I had a cleaner come and clean my house and it smelled of dettol I would be seriously happy Smile

RhubardGin · 25/08/2017 21:13

Do you also smell bullshit in your house OP?

mogonfoxnight · 25/08/2017 21:13

yabu to sack her for this (and as others have said, she may not have realised that the smell would get worse) but i do think you need to be cautious about allowing your dc to sleep in a room where there is a strong odour, any strong odour, without ventilation, because if they are very little it may cause problems and it isn't worth the risk. one of my dc had issues with lungs so I am now the cautious type over this sort of thing.

Firefries · 25/08/2017 21:13

And I have cats

krummymummy · 25/08/2017 21:14

Why post this. You obviously are going to get rid of her. Do you want people to make you feel good about it?
