We have just got home after being away and our cleaner came yesterday.
She has spilled what seems to be an entire bottle of Dettol in the kids room, washed it, left it and didn't tell us.
Why it was being used in there I'm not sure, I think more likely she was carrying it and dropped it.
We got back, all windows shut and a boiling hot day today as could smell the Dettol stink as soon as we opened the front door.
I texted and asked and she said yes she has spilled in in our child's room but washed it so no stain and went home.
Surely the fumes are dangerous from Dettol?
We've opened the window and moved her in with us for tonight but how on earth do you get the smell out?
It absolutely stinks.
Aibu to sack her?

You're being ridiculous and ignoring the questions on what else she could have done

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 20:56

And for the record it isn't just mine and my child's lungs I'm concerned about but we do indeed have 2 cats that were here at the time so now we have to watch out for bloody poisoning symptoms as there's no debating it's toxic to cats

You can see the snip was of a man with OCD who kept buckets if the stuff around his flat - so we can assume if it was detail that killed him, it was after lengthy exposure to buckets of the stuff.

@Sayyouwill Grin

Sayyouwill · 25/08/2017 20:57

The cats! Won't someone please think of the cats?!

Sorry, couldn't resist

Roomba · 25/08/2017 20:57

Isn't this the second thread this week about Dettol fumes being dangerous? Or am I losing my marbles?

Cheby · 25/08/2017 20:57

I probably wouldn't sack her, but I'd be fuckingn irritated to come back from holiday to a house with an unusable bedroom because a cleaner had spilled a cleaning product and failed to deal with it properly. She should have got a rug doctor or shampooed the carpet, you can't just leave dettol, it reeks. I can't stand it, my DM used to use it to clean if we were sick as children and now its inextricably linked to the smell of vomit for me. Makes my stomach turn.

Ktown · 25/08/2017 20:58

Open the window
I assume you have a carpet - this holds any smell for some time
It will go in a couple of days
I wouldn't sack her though

bloodymaria · 25/08/2017 20:58

Oh Friday night mumsnet, you are a one.

safariboot · 25/08/2017 20:58

"I don't know her very well as I'm not home when she comes"

That seems ... well, 'trusting' would be nice way of putting it. I'd be worried that any new cleaner would simply rob me blind if they had access to the house when I and family weren't in.

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 20:58

Yes well apart from choking on bloody Dettol fumes
What I would have liked her to have done is replied to me yesterday morning letting me know.
I then could have googled it, seen it was toxic to cats and got a neighbour with a spare key to take them for the day until we returned at least. Or I could have asked her to make sure that door was shut so the cats didn't have access to it.
Or I could have asked neighbour to go in and leave Windows open until last night.
Lots of things she could have done actually rather than replying " fine "

No don't sack her. What would be the point in her telling you about this dettol accident? She thought she'd dealt with it. It's because the house was closed up that the smell has lingered.

You don't sound like the sort of person I'd want to work for, or even know. Hmm

BuffaloCustardbath · 25/08/2017 20:59

It's one bottle of fertility that has been at least somewhat cleaned up, not buckets left lying around 24/7 for goodness knows how long as per the link. This has got to be a wind up.

Sayyouwill · 25/08/2017 20:59

So tell her "next time you spill a cleaning product, please let me know"

Would that be so difficult?

IHaveCausedConfusionAndDelay · 25/08/2017 20:59

Roomba it's the first one I've seen this week. Been sniffing the Dettol again dear?

treaclesoda · 25/08/2017 20:59

Someone with a serious mental health disorder that led him to live surrounded by Dettol in buckets may or may not have died as a result of that. But that is in no way comparable to someone spilling some and then cleaning up afterwards.

SuperStormborn · 25/08/2017 20:59

if you're that arsed, then kip in the garden for a few days

Mandatorymongoose · 25/08/2017 21:00

I have just opened and sniffed a bottle of dettol due to this thread.

Totally worth the risk of death.

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 21:00

Well she came recommended by friends, I met her on interview and for the first 2 cleans she did, husband was here for the next 2 and this time my neighbour was home when she was cleaning as she got the key from her and returned it to her

Sayyouwill · 25/08/2017 21:00

@BuffaloCustardbath fertility?! Grin

MrsDustyBusty · 25/08/2017 21:00

Listen, you're obviously bulling to fire her, you don't need our permission. So do it. You won't be satisfied until you do because it's clear you have no intention whatsoever of listening to anything else.

Mammysin · 25/08/2017 21:00

Who was taking care of your cats?

Twickerhun · 25/08/2017 21:01

Op chill. The cats will be fine, as will you. However if you fire your cleaner over this you would be incredibly unreasonable.

RhubardGin · 25/08/2017 21:01

Why don't you clean your own bloody house then!

Wine
Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 21:01

Because on the bottle it says " dangerous to cats " and I have TWO cats?
Because any sane person knows Dettol stinks so would be polite and let the person know?
