Long thread here with examples of how Arpaio operated over the years. Well worth a read.

We've been covering Joe Arpaio for more than 20 years. Here's a couple of things you should know about him... 1/many

Roussette · 26/08/2017 15:53

I read that thread Lion, it's appalling what that man Arpaio has done.

I present to you fellow thread inhabiters...
"Trump staring blankly at Hurricane Harvey Projection maps."
Bloody hell the man is gormless isn't he... or at least he comes across as that.

Trump: yes, we have no Steve Bannon
AcrossthePond55 · 26/08/2017 16:04

Hell, the only thing Scrotus was looking for on those maps was whether or not any of his properties was in danger.

I assume one or more was or he wouldn't have signed a disaster declaration. You know, to make himself eligible for those low/no interest rebuilding loans.

Roussette · 26/08/2017 16:16

Oh my! Yes Across! I never thought of that.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 26/08/2017 16:18

Mayor of Phoenix doesn't seem to be a fan.

Trump: yes, we have no Steve Bannon
Lweji · 26/08/2017 17:05

"Donald Trump has been tweeting non-stop about the storm this morning, even reacting calmly and constructively to a warning from a Republican senator."

“Keep on top of hurricane Harvey dont mke same mistake Pres Bush made w Katrina,” Iowa’s Chuck Grassley tweeted to the president yesterday, prompting this reply this morning:

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
.@ChuckGrassley - got your message loud and clear. We have fantastic people on the ground, got there long before #Harvey. So far, so good!
12:32 PM - Aug 26, 2017

It's not him, is it?

www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2017/aug/26/hurricane-harvey-makes-landfall-in-texas-latest-updates?page=with:block-59a16764e4b07fc6f8bda702#block-59a16764e4b07fc6f8bda702

At least the new FEMA Chief seems to be good at the job and well respected.

Lweji · 26/08/2017 17:08

In Rockport buildings have collapsed, including

"The roof of a high school had partially caved in, about 10 people were taken to the county jail for treatment after the roof of a senior housing complex collapsed, and the historic downtown sustained extensive damage, AP reported."

But rain is forecast for the rest of the week, so the flood risk isn't over. On the contrary.

Sleipnirthewonderhorse · 26/08/2017 17:16

Northwest that's pretty strong from the mayor of Phoenix - " Donald Trump can ignore the rule of law". I assume DT will now spend his valuable time in some sort of childish comeback.
I must say I've found today's news incredibly depressing. Yet another case of watching DT do absolutely whatever he wants, whether its against legal laws or laws of normal decency and being allowed to get away with it. Again. I'm not surprised he's getting worse- why wouldn't he, if no-one is prepared to stand up to him? Im coming to the sad conclusion that a sexist racist country where the rule of law means nothing is actually what the american people want.

Very amusing

Lweji · 26/08/2017 17:32

What was that word? Oh, yes. Obstructionists.

orlantina · 26/08/2017 17:59

If you accept a pardon, doesn't that mean you accept you are guilty?

With his pardon pen, POTUS reveals his own contempt for our Constitution, our courts, and our founding principles of equality and justice.

InigoTaran · 26/08/2017 18:22

God, just reading my Twitter feed today makes me want to weep. My partner isn't interested in politics so can't discuss it with him. It's like watching a country implode. And this is THE USA!!!! AngrySad

lionheart · 26/08/2017 18:28

Some debate about that online, as far as I can tell orlantina.

It may have an impact on any civil actions brought against Arpaio.

Abuse of the pardon also may be grounds for impeachment .

The latter, I will add to the pile of all the other impeachable activities that don't seem to bring any kind of result.

Wow. "Hold the line until our country gets back to understanding & respecting each other..." Jim Mattis to US troops

Shock
Lweji · 26/08/2017 19:12

If this is his re-election strategy, surely it's misguided.

Trump looks to 2020 but a more immediate peril looms: Democratic control, and impeachment power, in the House

"As he picks fights with his own party’s congressional leaders, Trump is adopting his own version of “triangulation,” trying to forge a separate and distinct identity from both Republicans and Democrats."

Not sure he can pull out the "what have you got to lose" con again anyway, even if he manages not to get impeached.

cozietoesie · 26/08/2017 20:13

Mattis said what?

lionheart · 26/08/2017 20:31

Yep. He's looking for a reverse button on his tank.

On that earlier point about the law.

Ben Jacobs‏Verified account @Bencjacobs 3h3 hours ago

Worth noting that once someone has accepted a pardon they cannot invoke 5th Amendment because they inherently cannot incriminate themselves

cozietoesie · 26/08/2017 20:35

Ah Yes. I remember that point. Smile

lionheart · 26/08/2017 20:38

Breaking: NBC News confirms Trump poised to end favorable treatment for Dream Act kids.

cozietoesie · 26/08/2017 20:41

That was coming. Sad

lionheart · 26/08/2017 20:44

I suppose it t does show how desperate he is to appease his base.

Lweji · 26/08/2017 20:51

The problem is that his current base won't give him a re-election.
He needs to move towards the centre.

lionheart · 26/08/2017 20:52

Let's hope he stays put then. Smile
