mashable.com/2017/08/25/hurricane-harvey-unprecedented-flood-risk/#eZVWkfz9aOqR

An article about the severe flood risks posed by the imminent hurricane Harvey. A number of newspaper articles suggest a lot of at risk people aren't heeding the warnings about this storm- possibly they think as it's "only" a cat 2 hurricane at the moment, that it's not going to affect them... but rainfall, storm surge and flooding risk is down to a lot of different factors, only one of which is the wind speed.
I hope there's not also an element of "experts know nothing".
I hope those who have stayed behind in the risk areas have at least come up with a "what if" plan, to get themselves to high ground/roof etc if they need to.

Sadly, this could become one of those "see why you should listen to scientists and climate researchers may be right about climate change"?

The problem is if nothing much happens it will be heralded as another science failure. (not understanding that it's a complicated system and warnings are to prepare for the worst to protect lives)

HowDoYouFeelNow · 25/08/2017 17:25

Thanks for the new thread Perking. Still outraged and paying attention.

orlantina · 25/08/2017 17:25

I wonder if this could be his Hurricane Katrina?

I think he has another rally next week.

www.news-leader.com/story/news/politics/2017/08/25/report-president-trump-coming-springfield-next-week-talk-taxes/600965001/

Maybe he should put yet another rally on hold.

lettuceWrap · 25/08/2017 17:26

Yes, exactly- the warnings are there to hopefully prevent loss of life (and property, if it's boarded up and secured, it may escape damage), but successful evacuations tend to make people a bit complacent, including people in authority, as nobody is seeing the deaths which would have happened, if there had been no warning and no evacuations, iykwim. People may start to think, ah, we'll just stay put, nothing terrible happened last time.

cozietoesie · 25/08/2017 17:31

The trouble is that once you're in a hurricane - and Yes, I have been - there's very little that you can do.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/08/2017 17:36

I don't think it will be another Katrina, that was down to a mix of some very specific geography and the abandonment of a certain part of society there.

Placemarking with a pic of recent purchase. We ran out of poo bags.

Thank you for the new thread. Am struggling to keep up at the moment but am going back to finish reading the last thread.

BiglyBadgers · 25/08/2017 17:38

When you have a significant group of people who think weather is an act of God (literally), and have a strong distrust of science and mainstream media you are going to have a big problem during a potential disaster like this. It is horrible and I am just hoping that it doesn't turn out as serious as some fear it may be. Sad

MsHooliesCardigan · 25/08/2017 17:40

I thought Springfield was a fictional place where the Simpsons live Confused
Surely he can't be having another fucking rally? This is getting ridiculous- rallies are for when you're campaigning for office, not for when you're supposed to be, like, governing the country.
Much as I abhor TM, at least she's not pissing tax payers' money away on constant rallies.

Fekko · 25/08/2017 17:41

Hello new thread. Reporting for duty.

badbadhusky · 25/08/2017 17:43

I thought Springfield was a fictional place where the Simpsons live

If I recall, Matt Groening et al chose it because every state has a Springfield, so it has an everyman quality & is nicely non-specific. I don't know if this includes Hawaii and Alaska.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/08/2017 17:45

A good friend in Tx is battening down her hatches. She's not right on the coast but expecting 18-20 inches of rain this weekend.

She's an evangelical and a closet Trumpette so I asked her if this hurricane is God's punishment on Tx for voting Trump. You know, seeing as how everything bad that happens in a blue state is 'God's justice'. Dead silence.

LionsTeeth · 25/08/2017 17:46

I haven't posted on these threads before but I hope it's okay to join in! Everyday I become more and more fearful about what's going on. I've been rereading Primo Levi's If this is a man, and the idea of nazis in America, who the president won't condemn is terrifying. I thought I'd share the poem which is at the beginning of Levi's book and is a stark reminder of the evils of fascism.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 25/08/2017 17:46

Sarah Kendzior Twitter thread on his next rally:
1.My guess for why Trump's going to Springfield: crowd size. He bombed in AZ. But b/c he's new to Ozarks, ppl will go purely out of curiosity

2 Trump largely ignored MO and states near Springfield: AR, KS, OK. He'll try to get a new crowd to avoid embarrassment of low attendance.

3 That rally size is a big Trump concern shows his pathetic desperation; that he's prioritizing campaigning during a natural disaster is vile.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/08/2017 17:48

I thought Springfield was a fictional place where the Simpsons live

It is to us. But The Simpsons is broadcast on Fox Network and Scrotus thinks everything on Fox is the truth. Sshhhh! Don't tell him. Hopefully he'll get lost driving around looking for it and we'll never hear from him again.

lettuceWrap · 25/08/2017 17:49

Cozie- sounds scary, I've only had to deal with normal Scottish gales (with some pretty bad localised flooding)

cozietoesie · 25/08/2017 17:55

....Dead silence....

Norty Across. Grin

Literal LOL. (I'm alone in the office)

Harvey's effect on energy. A CNN Money piece.

Hurricane Harvey and oil infrastructure

PerkingFaintly · 25/08/2017 18:11

Ooh fook. Harvey's going to cause a sea surge. Those aren't good.

Hope things go as well as possible in Texas.

And since this is talking about forces of nature, my thoughts have been with those in Sierra Leone this last week, caught in the mudslide. The country has been through so much in recent years with ebola, and now they get such a large scale disaster as this. Not likely to be anyone from SL reading, but I didn't want it to go unremarked for all that.

OP posts:
Perihelion · 25/08/2017 18:20

lettuce's link says parts of Texas could get upwards of 35 inches of rain.......potentially 1 metre of rain, with a storm surge...Shock

In pondering all the talk of Trump being unfit to lead and possible early stage dementia, I was wondering if this will be used as a defense or to prevent jail time, like Earnest Saunders in the Guinness fraud trail?
