Gilmore Girls - Dean

Got my dn to start watching Gilmore Girls so we've been chatting about it.

This has probably been done to death but isn't Dean just an awful, horrible character?

He's possessive, jealous, moody, emotionally black-mailing Rory constantly...

And everyone loves him and panders to him.

In one episode he phones over 20 times in like two hours! And Lorelei encourages Rory to put up with that and even pander to it!!

It actually makes for pretty horrible viewing and I have told impressionable 16 year old niece that she should run very, very far from a boy like that!

Anyway, AIBU?

*Disclaimer: I'm aware there are far more faults with the show. I am also aware that it is entirely fictional, and that I have no life!

Logan reminds me of Tristan- the facial features, bad boy image (Tristan doing something to the principal's car, Logan with the L&D brigade) and Tristan being sent to military school/Logan being sent to London

The quirky town-folk are the best thing. Does anyone remember Northern Exposure? It had similar eccentrics.

They ended up with Rory being a mixture of all the horrible traits of the men and women in her life. She ended up worse than Dean at least he had youth to explain him being an arse.

My niece has definitely crossed over to the Gilmore side and is obsessed Grin

Currently despises Dean and thinks Luke puts up with far too much from Jess! She's older than her years, clearly!

Moira, I'm with you - quirky townsfolk was what drew me in. I still miss Northern Exposure. I think one of GG's successes was that the characters are all flawed. That's what makes them interesting. I thought the Marty situation was so true to life. How often are friendships tinged with one person wanting a bit more. He adores her. She liked him but didn't fancy him and was too wrapped up in the whole destructive glamour of Logan.

I don't recall the party scene with Jess - when did it happen?

I used to like Dean - missed the whole controlling thing. Didn't like Logan though - found him selfish. Came to prefer Jess in the end - surprised if wouldn't take no - but then again don't recall him doing so!!

Rory and Jess were at a party and he put loads of pressure on her to shag him and when she wouldn't he flipped out at her!

Dn is reminding me of it all, I might re-watch.

The episode with the dance competition where Dean dumps her and shouts at her in front of everyone. He really is a big little bastard!

Agreed; me and DP both hate Dean.

The guilt tripping and endless calling annoyed me. He seemed to resent the fact that she wanted to be sucessful/get into a cgood college etc. and wouldn't accept that that takes work and therefore she can't spend 24/7 with him. Would drive me insane in 5 minutes.

I hate Rory too though, actually I hate most of the characters, not sure why I watch it sometimes! I find both Emily and Paris really funny though.

It's charm definitely comes from the supporting characters. Paris is a gem.

I think the problem is we as viewers were constantly reminded of how wonderful and angelic Rory was. Like she had zero imperfections. It was ridiculous!

Team Jess (except the party scene) all the way.

Dean was a needy, selfish drip, and Logan was unbearable.

Loathe Dean! Nasty, entitled, arrogant and bullying. Team Jess (other than party scene) here too, especially adult Jess.

However, my main ire is reserved for Logan and his horrible squinty face. Spoilt brat. I could never stand him, and the revival! WTF, Rory? Can I be explicit about the revival or have people not watched it yet?

Love Emily and Richard, Luke, Sukie, Lane and Zac and Mrs Kim, Kirk, Paris and the rest - I just don't like Lorelai, Rory and most of their love interests!

Early Logan was fab. I loved all the life and death brigade stuff. He was ruined by his family expectations!

It was Rory's treatment of Paul and lorelai treatment of him as well. It is how I imagine lolerai and Luke's relationship if they had dated 20 years earlier. I know the writers wanted to show a flawed side but I ended up hating them. I wanted Rory and Logan together so they could spend the next 20 years cheating on each other. Thank god for Paris. Still angry about Lane!
