Gilmore Girls - Dean

Got my dn to start watching Gilmore Girls so we've been chatting about it.

This has probably been done to death but isn't Dean just an awful, horrible character?

He's possessive, jealous, moody, emotionally black-mailing Rory constantly...

And everyone loves him and panders to him.

In one episode he phones over 20 times in like two hours! And Lorelei encourages Rory to put up with that and even pander to it!!

It actually makes for pretty horrible viewing and I have told impressionable 16 year old niece that she should run very, very far from a boy like that!

Anyway, AIBU?

Dave was my fave in the early days but Logan is just a beautiful man. Same in the Good Wife.

Interestingly (or not) my DH hated Jess!

Oh Jess was very beautiful in The Good Wife.

I agree, there was a definite shift in season 7, though Paris really came into her own then!

Dean was awful and young Jess too. But grown up Jess was great and really "got" her IMO. Though she is a bit of a numpty

Never liked Logan, he made my skin crawl from the start.

Poor Logan! He's just a misunderstood little billionaire!

I love GG, and I will never not love it. However, on rewatch I think the the writers did an amazing job of telling us how amazing/smart/sweet Rory was without actually demonstrating it. On the show she was bratty and self-centered.

There was a lot of fat shaming in it, too. If I'm nitpicking...

And homophobia. Gilmore Guys podcast even started a segment called, "Um, is this homophobic?"

Logan was seriously manipulative from the start and just wanted to play her. I thought he was always treating her like a toy. He never respected her as an equal at all and always came across as hugely entitled.

I think she did a bit of a "wrecking ball" on him though - in that he went in there with the intention of playing games but then ended up falling for her.

But that didn't negate the way he treated her for basically all of their relationship ever.

It was homophobic, and a couple of disablist comments made me wince!

I think it was just TV at that time, though.

I hated Dean. Nasty, passive aggressive, manipulator. I never understood the attraction to Jess and was Team Logan all the way until the revival and then Jess became my favourite

It was certainly of its time.

I think some of the Korean family jokes were a bit cringey by today's standards too TBH.

I never particularly liked any of Rory's boyfriends (which one was Zac?) but like a PP said, Logan made my skin crawl. I kind of forgave Dean his ineptitudes. They were so young and muddling through their first relationship. When he later cheated on his wife & slept with Rory I wanted to give them both a slapping though.

Oh of course. I liked him! Also fairly inept at relationships but rather lovely.

I just remember Dean being lauded as this wonderful, perfect, extra tall, ideal boyfriend and he's awful.
