I saw an abhorrent video on Twitter yesterday, a female journalist of black and Hispanic heritage interviewed a White Supremacist couple in their home. They said some disgusting things to her ("we'll burn you out of this country" and "I'm superior to you in every way"), how she held it together I'll never know, she's a better person than me.

The thing that chilled me the most was how calm and matter-of-fact they were. They genuinely believed in every disgusting word they uttered Angry. Of course they claimed not be racist at all, just "concerned" about the perceived erosion of their "white heritage".

Roussette · 22/08/2017 08:02

I watched that #caveMum it was absolutely vile.

As a totally shallow aside, watching Trump's talk on Afghanistan, I think he's gone for a more brown/ash shade on his hair. It's definitely toned down a bit from the ghastly orange he normally sports Grin

Bannon’s Breitbart tears into Trump after Afghanistan speech

Articles liken the president's approach to Obama's, and blame the national security adviser for the tone of the address.

Interesting piece on trump and the significance of breaking tabboos

www.theatlantic.com/amp/article/537519/

ibbleobbleblackbubble · 22/08/2017 08:23

'But just 24 hours later, Trump effectively renounced his own statement. Speaking spontaneously, in response to questions from reporters, he returned to his “many sides” formulation and the moral equivalency of the marchers and counter-demonstrators. The president of the United States said that there were “very fine people” on both sides.

In that moment, Trump committed the gravest act of sacrilege of his presidency. In that moment, the president rendered himself untouchable by all who share the belief that Nazis and the KKK are not just bad—they are taboo.

Taboo violations are contagious. They render the transgressor “polluted,” in the language of anthropology, and the moral stain rubs off on those who physically touch the transgressor, as well as on those who fail to distance themselves from the transgressor. When people march with Nazis and Klansmen, even if they keep their mouths closed when others are chanting, and even if they don’t personally carry swastika or Klan flags, they acquire the full moral stain of Nazis and Klansmen. By saying that some of these men were “very fine people,” the president has taken that stain upon himself.'

I only watched this last night (we get it on TV one week later or so) but was really touched.

Jimmy Fallon on Charlottesville.

It can, if the sample is proportional to the make up of that population. But there's still a fairly high error margin.
Say, 3 % error, which means 9 % could be something between 6 and 12 %, so a 6% interval.
They haven't been so wrong in elections, although there are cases of missing some results, mostly because of inadequate sampling.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/08/2017 08:35

cave I can't bring myself to watch it but it sounds awful Sad

northwest it does seem like a small sample size but I think that's taken into account when they calculated
the margin of error of 3.5 percentage points (so the actual figure supporting nazis could be anything from 5.5% - 12.5%)

lweji I've now realised that
I have constantly confused jimmy
Fallon with jimmy kimmel which explains the uneaSy sense of confusion when I watch either of
them Blush

Seems Trump retweeted another bot yesterday.

To retweet one bot is a mistake but to retweet 2 bots??

orlantina I was going to type that I can't imagine him having any kind of plan and that his retweeting of the bot is probably ego driven (and they're heavy propagators of pro trump stuff so statiscally more likely maybe?) but there was an article about trump retweeting teens' tweets that implied he was social media savvy

www.politico.com/story/2017/08/20/trump-twitter-generation-teen-supporters-241796

(This snippet was sad)

“I think his use of Twitter is brilliant,” Dobrovich-Fago told POLITICO, likening Trump’s social media dispatches to FDR’s “fireside chats.”

Although actually, i think I might be back to the original premise that it's not planned because he doesn't seem capable of thinking even one move ahead

Jimmy Fallon is in New York and used to be on SNL.

Jimmy Kimmel is in the west coast (LA?) and has lost a lot of weight.

From his speech

"My original instinct was to pull out -- and, historically, I like following my instincts. But all my life I've heard that decisions are much different when you sit behind the desk in the Oval Office; in other words, when you're President of the United States. So I studied Afghanistan in great detail and from every conceivable angle"

I do wonder what he thinks of Barack Obama now?

I thought this MSNBC piece was good. They mention a "scripted speech" as in code for it's not him talking. Watch David Rothkopf's face. :)

And, btw, I think Trump just meant with the speech that he has no idea what he'll do, as usual. As David says "the illusion of action". Why?
"He did it to change the conversation"
As usual

On a side funny note, an alt-spelling bee:

The Lawrence O'Donnell video was interesting, thanks.

Have the Generals taken over? In normal circumstances, given I'm a liberal that would be worrying, but they are the grown ups and so it's reassuring.

I hope it does change the tone and helps heal the country, and maybe prepare it for Mueller's findings.

Thanks for the thread , lion. It's an inspired and inspiring title and I wanted to post on it at least once.
