I think that historically, mums have had to clean up the detritus of their teenage sons' emissions - be it cleaning the bathroom floor, the loo, the bedsheets or the bedroom floor - while dads have had to do these things less often in general. Girls don't produce horrible crusty tissues, either.

I think it's another form of sexism, myself; I imagine that the young men who are happy to leave crusty items all over the house for their mum to clean away would be far more reticent if it was their dad. A MAN can't let another MAN clean up his tissues, after all.

As a less serious aside I have 2 boys who will be teens in 7 years and I am dreading this suffice to say I do not intend to be a mummy martyr and WILL speak up if needed.

And- speaking as the mother of a nearly 20 year old I have had none of that "detriius" you speak of.
