To feel very very frightened

I'm overwhelmed with all this talk of war, North Korea and now Trumps talking of military intervention in Venuzala, now i hear India and China are close to war. I feel as if we've no future, like the worlds going to explode. Is there any hope, please calm me down.

In the olden days (talking about the early to mid-80's) I recall being scared every day - I was going to work 5 miles away (on the bus) from my children's schools - my husband was a similar distance. We had no mobile phones, no internet. I was so worried what would happen to my daughter and son if someone pressed the button. It's natural to be worried and I totally get how you feel OP. However, the world continues to be unstable and we mere mortals can't do much about it. Now I have grandchildren to 'worry' about, 2 little ones and 2 of an age to be 'called up' if demanded; so not much is changing! I like AnneGrommit comment. Make a safe haven with loved ones and try to enjoy life. I'm not burying my head in the sand but worrying about it all those years ago didn't do me any good except cause stress.

Jesswhi · 13/08/2017 18:33

I agree it is all very worrying. You only have to watch Trump's reaction to the awful situation in America in the last 24hrs to understand what a truly A1 t**t he really is. However my experience of the media is that they will go to many lengths to make a good story and much of what is news is in my opinion merely speculation and propaganda think Brexit coverage. So in that sense there is probably less to be worried about than the fears that are currently being touted Hmm

retreatwhispering · 13/08/2017 18:37

Stop watching the news OP. If something terrible happens you will hear about it anyway. It's worrying, but there's nothing we can do but enjoy what we have and hope for the best.

I don't think that you're BU to be frightened though. I am too.

libbyb · 13/08/2017 18:39

Quizqueen: I cannot believe that you have taken the line that Obama was weak.
You are obviously a supporter of clueless despots and I despair that there are people like you on this planet!
Trump is' strong' and that's why he was voted in? He has the brain of a 5 year old - watch his face when he responds to any question - he's on the defensive and his attitude is "it's mine" !
So scary - but even more scary is that we have people like you living in close proximity who think he's a "leader" AIBU to say that you are contributing to this new conflict - or is it because it won't be your country that explodes that prompts you to respond how you have? Be in no doubt - this will be a Domino effect - nobody will survive!

Smudge100 · 13/08/2017 18:41

Come on, guys, we made it through the Cold War and God knows, that went on long enough.

NeverTwerkNaked · 13/08/2017 18:45

I do find this the most frightening place the world has been in for a while. Trumps rhetoric, going back a long way, indicates that there is a risk he is actually quite keen on launching a nuclear strike. Just have to hope there are enough other people working to stop him.

That said, I mainly try and put my head in the sand and just enjoy the mundane pleasures of life with my two small people who are totally oblivious to all of this

BeyondQueenOfLists · 13/08/2017 18:46

They both like a bit of willy waving, but neither trump nor KJU seem kamakaze suicidal to me? So MAD is surely as much of a deterrent as it was when it got us through the Cold War intact

Borodin · 13/08/2017 18:51

"From romances to parting"?

iloveeverykindofcat · 13/08/2017 19:29

The sheer delusion of both leaders is somewhat alarming, and I think the risk of war is higher than its been for a while - but still not high. Trump's staff simply wouldn't let him make a preemptive strike on NK. He'd be impeached first. NK won't strike first because a) they know perfectly well US could wipe them off the map b) if they did, even China would be forced to stop selling food and the country could no longer feed itself, which really would result in a coup. I presume. It's hard to say how powerful brainwashing really is. But I'm pretty sure people will revolt before they starve, as a general rule. So my take on it is that whilst the risk of war has gone up a little....we're still way more likely to die in a car crash etc. Not really worth panicking about.

God I wish someone would take Trump's phone away though.

simon50 · 13/08/2017 19:39

You should be more worried about the effects climate change will have over the next 40/50 years, the population of Africa etc, will be moving towards Europe as Africa will be uninhabitable.
Migrant crisis ? You ain't seen nothing yet !

heartstornastray · 13/08/2017 19:40

I agree, that is the frightening thing, but hopefully the thing that would prevent it? I know they'd be in their bunkers but they'd eventually have to come out to.....nothing. Their huge wealth would be worthless, nothing to spend it on. I'm banking on that.

My daughter is worried sick about Brexit and the effects of it on her and her family. She is so anxious she doesn't sleep properly and won't listen to the news as stuff like the numbskulls Un and Trump are saying just heightens her fear. I'm afraid it's something you have to learn to live with and try to keep, perspective on. I tell my daughter that I was born just after WW2 and it was a funny world then too, with rationing, TB, Polio and other nasty things going on like the Cuban crisis and Suez. Later we lived with threats from the IRA and other terror groups. There is always something to worry about but we are all still alive and kicking.

EMSMUM16 · 13/08/2017 19:43

Put both Kim Jong & Trump in a boxing ring & let them fight it out, they're both mad as a box of frogs

simon50 · 13/08/2017 19:46

EMSMUM16... Think that was already done by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.. Two Tribes !

"You should be more worried about the effects climate change will have over the next 40/50 years, the population of Africa etc, will be moving towards Europe as Africa will be uninhabitable. "

Ah yes - THAT I am worried about.

AgentZigzag · 13/08/2017 20:59

Ah, is that who viques was talking about? Thanks CC.

I heard in a news story he'd given some sort of sign to his parents (squeezing their hand maybe?) that he knew he'd made it home before he died. Small comfort but important to them I'm sure.

There's a prog just starting on Beeb2, North Korea: Murder in the Family. I wonder if KJU knows he'd be bumped off too if he didn't toe the line?

dottybooboo22 · 13/08/2017 21:04

What a world eh,
We just have to carry on carrying on because there's not a damn thing we can do to stop it.

At least Trump can't just go and push the button all by himself, there are procedures that have to be strictly adhered to and he would be undermined, i'm sure, by the rest of the senate. It's not as simple as him sneaking down in the middle of the night to do it, because if that was the case, THEN i would be really worried!!!

As for the other little toad in north korea i'd send someone in to take him out!

Another scenario i read about today is that Vladimir Putim has called out the whole thing as a red flag incident...he says that north korea doesn't even have nukes but what they DO have are rare minerals that the US really need!
so they're making the whole thing up to get their hands on them.

Cast your minds back to tony blair, sadaam hussain and the WMD's that never existed.

conspiracy theory??? ... make your own minds up.

There are things going on behind the scenes in this world that we, the minions, the little chess pieces know nothing about!

PickAChew · 13/08/2017 21:14

We can only keep on keeping on.

Took advantage of the rare fine day, today and parked up in the city centre and took the kids for a stroll along the river side. It's a tiny city and within 10 minutes we were on a track alongside fields of wheat. The only thing preventing us running through those fields of wheat was the fact that the ground was rather boggy, in places!

It was lovely, though. The kids were relaxed and we were too busy enjoying the landscape to give a shit about current affairs.

CoolCarrie · 13/08/2017 21:17

I am watching the documentary on tv now, interesting stuff.

kateandme · 13/08/2017 21:32

Coolcarry - what documentary is that? What channel please

MammaTJ · 13/08/2017 21:45

There have been many times in my nearly 50 years on this earth when it felt like the end of it, but that has not happened yet. Hopefully, as you get older, you will become immune to the Scrotum Rattling of world leaders and just get on with your life accordingly.

amazing scrotum rattling phrase totally stolen from 'The last leg'

heartstornastray · 13/08/2017 21:50

I've had a lovely day today, out walking with family and dog. Appreciating the little things in life, trying not to think about scary stuff, just pushing it all to the back of my mind. I've always been a worrier. It's a lovely world we live in, not everyone is fortunate to enjoy it. We in the west are lucky. So much strife and greed, if only we could all get on and live in harmony. Thanks for all the replies, they've helped so much.

'But I'm pretty sure people will revolt before they starve, as a general rule'

I always thought 'society's only 3 square meals away from revolution' was true as well, but hundreds of thousands have already starved to death there and the majority of them now rely on imported food (good as a bargaining tool?).

I presume they've done away with any opposition and made sure groups of people aren't given the opportunity to express dissent.

Lol at Putin calling the US on trying to get their mitts on rare minerals dotty, because they'd never do anything so low as a land grab would they? Grin

dottybooboo22 · 13/08/2017 22:04

Oh they never would, Agent! 😉
