Hello all, new to Mumsnet and not sure if this post is in the appropriate place? Sorry if not...

Anyway, was having a discussion with the ladies at work about how the tree leaves are already starting to change colour. The nights are slowly drawing back in and it feels cooler (although it seems to have warmed up again today).

This got me feeling excited as I absolutely love autumn and the '...ber' months!

Apart from one colleague who feels the same, the others think I'm strange for loving Autumn!

Anyone else? :D

I live in a village that enjoys Halloween.
We have a Pagan fiddle concert, Pumpkin Ball for the little ones, Adults only Midnight Party.
We spend the week baking, kids choose songs and jokes for guising, make costumes, decorate the house, have ghost story readings.
Often friends will have Tarot Readers come to parties, we have Wand making workshops for kids at the village craft club.

Yes lasts a week.

It's the most WONDERFUL time of the year!

AradiasDaughter · 11/08/2017 17:19

Being an Italian witch I follow the seasons as 8 festivals. Samhain (Halloween) Shadowfest (Stegheria beliefs) is my new year so I absolutely love it! It's all about reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the next one. I usually make a "Halloween" type wreath for the door, take the kids to pick our own pumpkins and do all sorts of crafting. Plus my work starts to slow down a bit (apart from Halloween when I'm in demand a bit more Wink) which is always a good thing as I'm usually shattered from working most weekends from Feb-Oct!

It's lovely to hear so many people looking forward to the Wiccan/pagan holiday of Halloween. Smile

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 17:23

Me too- but pagan festivals keep me going all year round Grin

AradiasDaughter · 11/08/2017 17:25

Cailleach me too Grin it's like one big party

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 17:25

AradiasDaughter my work (pagan based) gets crazier during the winter months.

I'm a Spiritual Life Coach/ Psychic (I'll get blasted on here probably) but I do a lot of the MBS fairs when the muggles come out and then get busier over Halloween and Christmas with the private parties I do.

ForalltheSaints · 11/08/2017 17:30

Autumn colours are lovely, and if you can have a holiday then you can have pleasant weather and not have too many crowds at tourist attractions.

toffee1000 · 11/08/2017 17:31

Christmas lasting a whole month??? Good grief!! How does it last a month? I've seen so many people on here getting stressed about just one day/couple of days so a whole month sounds madness! Where do you live?

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 17:32

Good for you - I make and sell craft/pagan items ( don't want to out myself too much) and sell worldwide, online, supply several shops in USA, Canada, Japan, China etc.
Halloween/Yule is a mental time for me, I am already ordering supplies getting ready for this busy time.

AradiasDaughter · 11/08/2017 17:35

Cailleach PM me your wares and I'll take a look. I bet I already have you on Facebook Grin

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 17:44

toffee- I live in Scotland.

Yes, a month.
First week we start by making the paper snowflakes. A Swedish friend taught me how to make these traditional paper snowflake cut outs- very intricate, and started with the kids when they were toddlers. Now it's one of the first things we do, make dozens and pin them on windows, all around the house. ( Lovely when the sun shines through and casts shadows of snowflakes around the room). We scent candles for later use, of course get out all the blankets and winter cushions, make christmas cake, make our Yule logs, ( wooden ones). We gather pine cones, stud satsumas with cloves, make a gingerbread house, loads of christmas crafts. The crafts vary from year to year.
I make cinnamon vodka and cranberry gin.
I start shopping for christmas food, buying nice things I see and put them away. We start the odd christmas outing, then nearer the time, we collect evergreens, make wreaths, and finally the tree.
Our village musicians will have a Yule Ceiledh, a christmas concert, various mulled wine evenings with friends. and that still leaves a week to go. We have a solstice feast and ceremony and celebrations on Christmas eve, Christmas day and the following week.

In December there are fun things going every day or two, the preparations are very much part of the enjoyment of Christmas.

toffee1000 · 11/08/2017 17:58

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds nice! I suppose everyone's got a different opinion on things. I do actually like Christmas although as I still live at home I haven't had to organise it all myself yet.

Dustbunny1900 · 11/08/2017 18:05

Halloween for me is two months (sept-oct) and right before thanksgiving here I gear up for Christmas! So a good month for me as well. I love holidays , just adds so much flavor and enjoyment to life, I could never live somewhere that didn't have 4 seasons.
I make sure they aren't too stressful though, I don't do the whole get-yourself-into-massive-debt over Xmas gifts or any of that.
calli, that sounds lovely!

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 18:09

Thanks dustbunny- the US attitude to festivals sounds fantastic.
Sure we have bad weather for half the year, but a celebration makes it go with a swing!

(And what's not to love about coming in on a cold winter's night to a mug of hot chocolate slyly laced with some of my home made cinnamon vodka Wink )

NoMudNoLotus11 · 11/08/2017 18:32

Cailleach could you please pm your website or fb page - I'd love to have a look Smile

tootsieglitterballs · 11/08/2017 19:05

@Cailleach666 I think I need to move to wherever you are based - it sounds truly wonderful!

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 19:11

tootsie- yes, come along! I feel very fortunate.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 11/08/2017 19:13

I absolutely hate Hallowe'en - what is the point of it? Some silly made up event which is becoming more and more 'there' as the years go by. Why can't people just enjoy the day/week/month which is happening now rather than wish it all away?

Cupcakey · 11/08/2017 19:20

I love it too Smile

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 19:22

milktray- Halloween is an ancient Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the "darker half" of the year.
It dates back to before christianity, and some of us still like to celebrate.

Not sure what you mean about it being a " made up event"- you mean like Christmas? or Easter?

Coconutspongexo · 11/08/2017 19:24

I look forward to autumn/winter as for some reason I am more anxious and depressed in spring/summer.

People are different

TheNaze73 · 11/08/2017 19:25
