Hello all, new to Mumsnet and not sure if this post is in the appropriate place? Sorry if not...

Anyway, was having a discussion with the ladies at work about how the tree leaves are already starting to change colour. The nights are slowly drawing back in and it feels cooler (although it seems to have warmed up again today).

This got me feeling excited as I absolutely love autumn and the '...ber' months!

Apart from one colleague who feels the same, the others think I'm strange for loving Autumn!

Anyone else? :D

Cailleach666- I don't mean the actual day/event - I mean all the ridiculous outfits which children want to wear - the horrendous trick or treating and the supermarkets generally cashing in on the whole thing with specific items for that day. I agree the day itself is steeped in tradition.

DrCoconut · 11/08/2017 19:38

YABVU. I'm still waiting for summer. I loathe Autumn and winter. They're a depressing shite fest of cold, dark, rain, horrible clothes and hospital admissions with asthma for DS2. Nothing enjoyable about them at all other than perhaps a couple of days at Christmas if no one is ill. Bring on sunshine, light nights, unrestrictive clothes and fun times.

MsLexicon · 11/08/2017 19:40

Seriously?

And I was looking to a cruise in the Caribbean.

Cary2012 · 11/08/2017 19:46

I too think Autumn has come early. Bushes in garden bursting with big fat blackberries, at least three weeks early, and my gorgeous clematis is now flowering, always been September at the earliest up until this year.

I love misty Autumn mornings and all the glistening cobwebs on the hedgerows.

Butterfly3005 · 11/08/2017 20:11

Wow I didn't expect so many responses! I'm happy to know I'm not as crazy as I thought.

I do love summer but with all the miserable weather lately, I'm happy to wave it goodbye. Saying that we usually get some glorious sunshine days in September anyway.

Not a lover of winter I admit and also suffer with a bit of SAD, all the viruses and flu going around and dark long nights (I hate going to work in a morning when it's still dark but I love leaving work when it's dark). I do wish we had some decent amount of snow!

...But I LOVE Autumn!! The crisp air, falling leaves, the smells, slow cookers, stews and soups, hot chocolate, new school year, harvest, my children's birthdays, halloween, bonfire night, children in need and the excitement of Christmas! Oh I could go on! The only bit I hate is when its very wet and you have to dodge all the slippery leaves!

Thanks OP, I;m feeling quite excited now after this thread!!

Girty999 · 11/08/2017 20:26

I bloody love autumn, warm boots and snuggle jumpers, I'm not a hot weather person at all but I do love all the cosy stuff mmmh fluffy socks and boots x

Mothervulva · 11/08/2017 21:54

I agree with pp who said they don't feel settled until September starts. I feel the same. Really looking forward to Autumn this year, although it feels hete.

SingingTunelessly · 11/08/2017 22:03

Love Spring and Autumn. This summer has been humid and no doubt Winter will be dull, grey and drizzly. You can rely on Spring and Autumn. Spring - lighter nights, trees/flowers bursting forth. Autumn - nights drawing in, leaves dropping, year turning. Love it. Smile.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/08/2017 22:36

“I never understand why people quote these nights as reasons why they love a whole season”

Me neither. I must admit that I don’t really enjoy Christmas. DD is 17 and there is just the three of us so Christmas is never a big deal for us.

“Nothing ever gets better and by summer I am thoroughly p'd off with the heat, humidity and noise of thundering, roaring petrol propelled garden equipment and balls bashing on decking, walls and wheelie bins.”

Where do you live where you get hot weather all summer? We are lucky to get a few consecutive days of hot weather. The thermometer hasn’t risen above 21 degrees since the schools broke up, and has averaged at about 17 degrees with several rainy days.

“Halloween lasts a week? I can't think of anything worse but each to their own.”

Same here.

“Don't worry that there's been no summer, you have Halloween and bonfire night to look forward to... Those two nights alone will make up for it, surely.”

Erm, no they don’t. Two nights out of 6 months of grim, dull, grey weather aren’t enough. And we don’t “do” Halloween now that DD is 17.

I find it interesting that all the summer haters like to extol the virtues of jumpers, boots, electric fires etc. Surely if you don’t like the heat you have no need of these that we summer lovers need in cold weather.

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 22:41

I do Halloween and I'm in my 50s.

Never too old for Halloween.

Delatron · 11/08/2017 22:41

That was my point. Everyone who loves Autumn quotes Halloween and bonfire night, as though dressing up as a witch and begging for sweets makes up for months of cold damp drizzle.... Bonfire night is just as crap. They hardly make Autumn. Astounded people look forward to these two nights.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 11/08/2017 22:42

Hmmm
Summer - wasps, mosquitos, sunburn, sweaty nights, early mornings (gah), screaming children, yet another rotten birthday, stinky bbq's, mowing the damn lawn, heatstroke, hayfever...

Autumn - golden hour in the evenings, falling leaves, harvest festivals, Jack Frost, proper cold rain, Samhain (Hallowe'en) Yule, DD's birthday (yay), new boots, woolly hats, kids back at school, real fires, Bonfire night, Hot tomato soup. I could go on. Lol (Did I mention Samhain?)

I'll let you guess what side I come down on .

LoniceraJaponica · 11/08/2017 22:43

I don't get it either. My birthday is between Halloween and bonfire night, but as it is at such a miserable time of year I just can't get excited about it.

Delatron · 11/08/2017 22:44

Yay leaves falling off the trees and tomato soup...

Cailleach666 · 11/08/2017 22:45

I adore summer-
I love the heat, long hazy days, soaking up the sun, the freedom of shorts and skimpy clothes, picnics, BBQs trips to the beach, just heaven. Usually go abroad too- it.s rarely too hot for me.

Doesn't stop me loving autumn and winter though, I'm not a hater of any season.

Slarti · 11/08/2017 22:45

I enjoy all the seasons as they each have something to look forward to. I'm not actively looking forward to summer ending as I enjoy gardening in nice weather (in between the year round rain). I'm a bit Hmm at people being excited about switching the heating on though. Don't get me wrong I love having the wood burner lit but I draw the line at getting giddy hearing the boiler click on.

Dragonflycushion · 11/08/2017 22:46

YABVVVVVVVVVVVU

toffee1000 · 11/08/2017 22:46

Cailleach you are from Scotland where Halloween has always been quite a big thing. It's not so big in England.
I will never, ever understand the attraction of cold and rain. It's fucking miserable and our usual weather for the vast majority of the year.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 11/08/2017 22:47

Delatron I LIKE tomato soup! Lol

IckyPop · 11/08/2017 22:48

Autumn is my favourite time of year. I love it when there's that slight chill to and change in the air. I'm normally bored of summer by August!

Delatron · 11/08/2017 22:49

ForagingForFaerieGold. So do I, no need to wail until Autumn! Have some now! Fill yer boots..

ForagingForFaerieGold · 11/08/2017 22:51

Delatron Ach, it's not the same hehe Smile

MeltingSnowflake · 11/08/2017 22:54

I LOVE autumn - especially since moving to California. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I can't relax when it's too hot, I always feel like I should be outside 'making the most of the sunshine' but it's TOO hot!

Roll on the dark evenings when I can curl up with a book and a glass of wine and do nothing! Grin

Only downside about autumn here is that there's no bonfire night Sad

MissEliza · 11/08/2017 22:54

I lived for ten years in a hot country where we didn't really have seasons, just very hot and hot. We moved back at the end of August therefore just in time for autumn. I was so happy taking in the smells and the colours. Dh thought I was crazy.
