AIBU to be excited it's nearly Autumn

Hello all, new to Mumsnet and not sure if this post is in the appropriate place? Sorry if not...

Anyway, was having a discussion with the ladies at work about how the tree leaves are already starting to change colour. The nights are slowly drawing back in and it feels cooler (although it seems to have warmed up again today).

This got me feeling excited as I absolutely love autumn and the '...ber' months!

Apart from one colleague who feels the same, the others think I'm strange for loving Autumn!

Anyone else? :D

Such a bunch of romantics on here! You all sound like a Rosamund Pilcher novel.

Funny no one's mentioned SAD yet; I guess I'm one of only a few who suffer from itHmm

coconutwater1 · 11/08/2017 03:57

Im so excited come back soon (Sept) and really looking forward to cooler weather, warm clothing and fresh air.

I love the Autumn and Winter (glad Im not alone here) coats, jumper, cardies and boots, love boots! Need said boots to kick up all the leaves that I really cannot resit doing, of course checking no-one can see me and maybe think I am bit, well strange.

Can practice all the hygge I want and not be bothered what others think!

Arealhumanbeing · 11/08/2017 04:37

I've had my autumn candles ready since February and it will soon be time to wash all my blankets and put them out in the sitting room.

AND I've already been blackberry picking! 😊🍂

stumblymonkeyagain · 11/08/2017 05:58

I'm totally with you...I will soon get our autumn/winter faux fur blankets dry cleaned ready for a decor switch around.

I make my living room all cosy with candles, blankets and autumnal things. It also reminds me of new starts like a PP said because of the start of a new academic year even though I'm not in education any more. I love dark nights and feel like everything feels a bit more magical and I feel more alive from September to December which probably makes me weird.

In the SE so we have less rain and more crisp days. We're also getting married on 1st December this year so lots of lovely bits to do for the wedding.

Can't wait to get my knee high boots and scarves out!

Tentativesteps133 · 11/08/2017 07:11

I feel like I have some kind of reverse SAD. Whilst I appreciate the longer days and love my garden, I always feel unsettled and don't sleep well through the summer months. Once Autumn rolls around and the routine of both mine and DH's sports restart and I can get back to cooking casseroles and crumbles and soup I just feel so much more content. I studied in various institutions for over 20 years so although I've worked for a while now, September still has that 'fresh start' feeling, way more than January. New notebooks and boots and friends.

Plus last October was stunning - I still look back at my instagram from then when I need cheering up. Let's hope for a repeat last year. For any of you other Autumn lovers on Instagram, the fallingleaves hashtag is a treat.

First child is due in December so this year feels extra special.

TheDowagerCuntess · 11/08/2017 07:11

I'm happy for the exact opposite reason - Spring is around the corner, and today felt very Spring-like indeed - bliss. 🌱🌿

As an aside, I'm amazed that anyone could consider February in the northern hemisphere to be anything even vaguely approaching Spring. It is winter, and the worst/coldest of it!

SparkyBlue · 11/08/2017 07:13

Love the autumn. I love getting back into boots and tights and wintery clothes that suit me so much better than summery stuff

lurkymclurkerson · 11/08/2017 07:18

Another one dreaming of thick tights and boots! I love Autumn and Winter, it's my birthday in September and I'm getting married in November so lots to be excited about this year! Then we get to come out of the wedding buzz and get straight into Christmas which is my absolute FAVOURITE. I even love the rain and the grey, it makes all my twinkly candles and fairy lights more appealing Grin

PumpkinPie2016 · 11/08/2017 07:19

I love Autumn and Winter - definitely my favourite times of the year! I love all of the nice colours/crisp days/having the fire lot on a dark night.

Having said that, I'm actually enjoying summer this year but probably because it's not that warm where I am. I can't stand feeling hot and sticky!

ethelfleda · 11/08/2017 07:48

Congratulations lurky Wine

Sayhellotothemoomoos · 11/08/2017 07:48

I love Autumn too.** Often the weather is lovely, great for long walks and bike rides. Cooking roasts and baking cakes, Halloween and bonfire night and Xmas to look forward to, getting out the boots, coats and scarves. It's fab.

I don't like the dark nights but they don't start to become a real drag until after Christmas.

I always thought Autumn was Sept, Oct, Nov.

Sayhellotothemoomoos · 11/08/2017 07:49

Oops, only the months were supposed to be in bold.

ethelfleda · 11/08/2017 07:50

And congratulations tentative!
Our first is due in November so Autumn will be extra special in our house too!

Florence16 · 11/08/2017 07:52

YANBU! I love winter too. Summer is not my thing...

ethelfleda · 11/08/2017 07:53

diodati I always suffered from SAD and as a resulted always loved summer and hates winter - especially January - with a passion. I got bought a SAD light last Christmas and it honestly completely changed my life! I had energy and felt normal through the worst of it.... And I think maybe this is why I now prefer autumn! Will definitely be getting my SAD light out again when the night's start really drawing in!

tootsieglitterballs · 11/08/2017 07:54

Ahhh, I adore autumn. I love winter too, but for me, autumn and spring are the most magical months when everything changes!

The food in autumn is my favourite. Can't wait for stews and soups!

Don't get me wrong, i love summer, but would love it more if it wasn't quite so unpredictable ....

Meadow74 · 11/08/2017 07:57

I love Autumn, best season of the year! I think it's because there is no disappointment. If it's cold and rainy you expect it, warm days are a bonus! Love the chilly evenings, warm fires, smell of the air...!

Spudlet · 11/08/2017 08:22

I love autumn too, I like wearing jeans and wellies! And lighting fires and getting cosy.

I shall like it even more this year because we are getting a new front door, so we won't have as many draughts in the living room. And we're doing a little bit of painting in here too, as we chose the paint colour in summer and in the autumn and winter light, the room can look quite cold.

Autumn always feels like a fresh start to me, left over from school I suppose. I want to go and buy new stationery!

PrimalLass · 11/08/2017 08:26

I love autumn. The air changed yesterday here (east Scotland).

MsJuniper · 11/08/2017 08:27

Oh the Irish/Celtic season thing has enlightened me on a mystery that has puzzled me for years! My SIL referred to her early-February-born DS as being born in the Spring in his naming ceremony and I was very confused at the time and occasionally since then until having a lightbulb moment just now.

I am a Spring-lover myself, but I like seeing the leaves change and if we do get cold crisp days I will enjoy them.

Still hoping for an Indian summer mind you.

lurkymclurkerson · 11/08/2017 08:33

Thank you ethel Brew and to you! Flowers

Unexpectedbaby · 11/08/2017 08:35

YANBU I love autumn. The colours, the weather, the chance to start wearing autumnal clothing. Can't wait to et my boots and thin knits back out!

This is the first autumn living where we do and our car park back onto a nature reserve. The acorns and conkers have already started to grow and I can just tell how pretty it will all look!

Ifailed · 11/08/2017 08:52

Cosy, Snuggling, bonfires, pretty leaves - sounds like a script for the most obvious and patronising TV ad.

Reality will be damp washing all over the house, grumpy kids, colds, flu, old people dying because they can't afford heating, massive queues at A&E, even-more-fucked-up than usual trains, struggling to work under grey and miserable skies, discovering your new boots aren't actually waterproof, ridicules over-sized umbrellas that poke people's eyes out, slippery mush of rotten leaves underfoot, floods, power cuts, foggy motorway pile-ups, leaking roofs, plumbers demanding your 1st born to fix broken boiler and bills, bills, bills to pay leaving you in debt for spring and summer.

diodati · 11/08/2017 09:00

A SAD light, ethel? Is it one of those flat white vertical things that you're supposed to sit in front of x number of hours each day?

NoMudNoLotus11 · 11/08/2017 09:41

I enjoy autumn until November, then it's just dark from 5pm and cold and miserable. Some people go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. Plus if you're worrying about bills, putting the heating on with the expense of it can be a mega worry.

It's one of those expectation/reality scenarios isn't it; expectation is crisp bright, warm days with children happily walking through leaves of red/orange and brown, hot drinks dipped under a cosy blanket whilst enjoying the lovely scent of wood burning bonfires.

The reality is usually dull, damp days with soggy leaves, hot drinks sipped under a blanket which gets too hot but then it's freezing when you take the blanket off, worrying about the cost of heating if you put it on. Starting the day freezing so you wrap up then end boiling during the day. The scents are always nice though! Grin
