AIBU to be excited it's nearly Autumn

Hello all, new to Mumsnet and not sure if this post is in the appropriate place? Sorry if not...

Anyway, was having a discussion with the ladies at work about how the tree leaves are already starting to change colour. The nights are slowly drawing back in and it feels cooler (although it seems to have warmed up again today).

This got me feeling excited as I absolutely love autumn and the '...ber' months!

Apart from one colleague who feels the same, the others think I'm strange for loving Autumn!

Anyone else? :D

"I will never, ever understand the attraction of cold and rain. It's fucking miserable and our usual weather for the vast majority of the year"

This ^^.

I suspect all the winter lovers don't struggle with heating bills or drying damp washing in a house with no central heating or tumble dryer.

nina2b · 11/08/2017 22:58

Autumn is my favourite.

CakesRUs · 11/08/2017 23:04

I love it too.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 11/08/2017 23:04

Tbh I'm not sure it's actually any of these things really. It's just a feeling. Like the first sunny day of the year almost always makes me feel a little bit uplifted. It doesn't last, but it nearly always happens. The start of Autumn is the same for me but it's more gradual and lasts longer. I dunno. I'm rambling. As you were

abigailgabble · 11/08/2017 23:08

definitely got a whiff of autumn today despite hideous summer holidayness..

Rachel0Greep · 11/08/2017 23:14

I like Autumn. I like the colours as the leaves turn. I like seeing new clothes in the shops, as the 'sales' end. I like taking time off in September, often better weather than 'summer'. I associate September with new beginnings, probably harking back to new school / college terms.

Teddy1970 · 11/08/2017 23:16

I Love Autumn and Winter, there's no pressure to wear skimpy clothes....you never see a womans magazine with " Get your dream body by October with our 2 week raincoat diet" on the cover do you?

Sallystyle · 11/08/2017 23:34

Autumn can piss off. I've not had a summer yet. The only saving grace will be the fact that I'll stop being disappointed that the sun isn't out. I hate winter with a passion. Some people make it sound so romantic but going to work early in the morning and having to defrost the car is not fun. It isn't fun when the younger kids are stuck in because it's dark once they get home from school. The relentless rain and cold. Cold makes me feel ill and depressed.

Everything is such an effort. Wrapping up just to go to the shops. Not being able to eat lunch at work outside. I should be able to hibernate.

I adore a proper summer and don't mind Spring. Winter and Autumn are horrid. I don't mind the colder nights if I can wrap up in Pjs and snuggle under a duvet but I work a lot of evenings so will be in a too cold for my liking building a lot of the time and I hate jumpers and wearing a lot of clothes.

I'm a miserable fucker when I'm cold and I feel the cold very easily.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 11/08/2017 23:47

Spring - March Equinox to June Solstice;
Summer - June Solstice to September Equinox;
Fall (autumn) - September Equinox to December Solstice; and,
Winter - December Solstice to March Equinox.

YANBU OP! Autumn is my very fave season of all ! For all the reasons the Autumn loving PP have mentioned. Though I'm not in the U.K. So we don't really get an Autumn like those which I do miss. Laughing at August being in Autumn!

Better clothes, better TV, Halloween and the run up to Christmas . Christmas also lasts all of December in our house. Though it's not cold here so that's a bit rubbish. We still go the whole hog though!

kitkat321 · 12/08/2017 00:16

Spring and Autum are my fave seasons - summer in the UK is over rated.

It's rarely as nice as you hope and when it is warm all the midges/horseflies appear along with my horrendous hayfever.

I love the promise of spring and the crisp, dark evenings of autumn!

Judydreamsofhorses · 12/08/2017 00:55

I love the start of autumn, and far prefer autumn/winter clothes, but hate going to work and coming home in the dark. Here it's dark by about 3pm in the proper depths of winter, and autumn feels like the start of that.

NikiBabe · 12/08/2017 01:02

Depressing as hell.

Dark nights, miserable cold weather.

Roussette · 12/08/2017 07:00

Everyone talks about Autumn in a misty, leaf crunching underfoot way, when in fact it usually involves rain lashing against the windows, waking up to grey skies, strong winds (which often means power cuts here) and general gloominess. Very depressing, no more being outside pottering in the garden for hours on end, I start to feel caged in.

I fail to see how one night of halloween can make that better. Or putting your Christmas tree up in November. I only feel OK about it all when we're the other side of Christmas and to be honest I only really get a spring in my step when the clocks change in March because I know there's hope of more daylight hours and warmth to come.

Cailleach666 · 12/08/2017 07:21

Rousette, but it's a state of mind I think.
There is no doubt that weather in the UK cold and wet for many months.
It's about finding joy though.
I live in Scotland where winters are darker and colder than much of the UK.
Countries with worse weather than us seem to find ways of still having happy times through these winter months.
Danish call it Hygge, Gremans Gemütlichkeit, Gaelic còsagach.
It's not about christmas trees in November, for me it's a time for some introspection, it's a time to be more relaxed- no charging about in light warm evenings.
I catch up with reading and planning, we have more time to talk and read and do indoor activities.
And find the magic
Wild weather has a power all of its own, lashing rain, frosty mornings, snow and ice, some of the most spectacular skies ans sunrises, woods and forests have a beauty of their own in the winter months.
Life is short and prefer to find joy and wonder in all times of the year.

SingingSeuss · 12/08/2017 07:31

I do love autumn. Long boots and tights, scarves and that slight nip in the air. Crunchy leaves and gorgeous colours. My only complaint is that I am still waiting for summer. I'd very much like that first.....

Cailleach666 · 12/08/2017 07:36

usually involves rain lashing against the windows, waking up to grey skies, strong winds

Which has been summer in Scotland for the past two months!

If we are looking at having a non idealistic view of seasons then let's start with summer. It has been gloomy and wet for almost all summer here in Scotland.
If you pin all your hopes on the halcyon hazy days of summer then you may end up feeling short changed.

Cailleach666 · 12/08/2017 07:37

Exactly singing- at least winter weather is reliable.
None of that mad rush to have a BBQ/picnic/trip to the zoo before the next downpour.

Coconutspongexo · 12/08/2017 07:45

The UK doesn't even have a summer, we don't even have 'proper seasons'.

WealdenFlowers · 12/08/2017 07:45

Metereologically speaking spring is march, april, may: summer is june july august, autumn is sep oct nov ans winter is nov dec jan.

I love autumn.

TipTopTipTopClop · 12/08/2017 07:47

I LOVE AUTUMN.

Sorry for shouting.

We need this thread in Style and Beauty so we can post all our proposed autumnal purchases Wink

Spudlet · 12/08/2017 08:00

I like the bad weather, in a perverse sort of way. I personally find it much easier to deal with than heat. I can add more layers in the cold but there are only so many pieces of clothing one can remove in summer before horses start to spook and people make complaints to the management. Also, I am pale, ginger, and afflicted with hay fever so I am essentially allergic to summer. I spend the time dosed up with antihistamines and sudafed, slathered in suncream and dodging from shady patch to shady patch. That's not to say summer doesn't have its nice bits, but it can feel a bit oppressive to me.

I like wrapping up for the cold, and getting the log basket filled up and wood chopped and a fire lit for warmth. I prefer wearing jumpers to vest tops, and fluffy slippers to sandals.

Each season has it's good points, bad points, and compensations. But I like autumn best of all.

DeadGood · 12/08/2017 08:04

"I love all seasons, but especially Autumn, there is a crackle of magic in the air."

Love this!

Cailleach666 · 12/08/2017 08:05

I think autumn makes me think like a child again.
It;s a season of expectations, the smell of a new leather school bag, the feel of the first frost in the air, Halloween approaching, knowing that Christmas- always the very best time of year was not too far away. And Now I have Yule and Imbolc to celebrate in winter months too.
I still feel that excitement in the air as the summer ends.

wtffgs · 12/08/2017 08:07

Yabu- I get so depressed by the shortening days. The leaves are gorgeous but everything else about impending winter makes me want to cry.

Cailleach666 · 12/08/2017 08:07

In fact as I dress this morning ( leisurely and with a coffee chatting you you guys) I can see the rain outside - it's torrential- and only 12 degrees- time to wear my leather boots.
