We're fucking screwed 😱

Trump threatens 'fury' against N Korea

The only real danger is NK - Kim Jong ILL is nuttier than squirrel shit and there are no barriers to his pressing the button - unlike Trump (maybe just as bonkers, but the USA DO have control over the President).

I can see NK striking first. USA would retaliate, but China would not pile in if NK were the aggressors. China just doesn't want to lose face.

BR62Y · 08/08/2017 22:12

NK strike first? I very much doubt it.

Lynnm63 · 08/08/2017 22:12

I've decided to scrap the diet. I have a chocolate cake in the freezer that will be defrosted for pudding tomorrow. Pissed off I won't see the end of GoT though.

Bunnyfuller · 08/08/2017 22:13

Trump has been completely manic on Twitter the last couple of days. A few negative press things have pissed him off and he's going nuts on there with bluster and ragging 'fake news' at all and sundry. He's in full blowhard mood, let's hope there's an executive order to shoot him if he starts unlocking the briefcase!

Bettercallsaul1 · 08/08/2017 22:16

I think at the moment an American president can give the order for a nuclear strike independently of Congress. There was an attempt this year to pass a bill making this conditional on a declaration of war by Congress but the bill has not yet been passed.

Justaboy · 08/08/2017 22:24

Right. NK has a missile that can theoretically so they say reach the States. They have not as yet developed a H bomb there're more damaging than A (fission ) bombs to fit on it. We aren't that sure that their guidance system is that good anyway.

So Kim fires one off towards the states that stands a very good chance of being shot down before it gets too far. They can have anti ballistic missiles stationed in South Korea, on ships in the pacific on Hawaii even so they have a lot of chances to knock it down anyway. They could blow it down a small nuke explosion with a missile passing close would defeat it.

The Israelis have some very good examples of Anti missile tech and I very much expect Americas abilities are kept quiet about, after all they don't wantt the Russkis knowing too much do they?

The damage would be if they had a "Lot" of missiles they could launch at once like the Russians have that's the real problem could they take them all out before they hit the states or anywhere else for that matter.

The Yanks could reply with a bit of Sun-fire of their own, these weapons come in very small sizes up to a few kilotons they arent all big city flatteners.

So it looks to me unlikely that it would be a big exchange and the Russians know that all out exchange would benefit no one hence the MAD principle thats kept the peace for a very long time.

It's in no other countries interests to have a nuke exchange so I expect that Kim will keep up the insults an so with Donald.

It will be more interesting the see what the Chinese influence would be and that outcome NK wouldn't want to lose face so interesting all the same.

Partypolitics99 · 08/08/2017 22:25

It won't happen. Both Trump and Kim Jong are power hungry and love being in charge over the little people. If they start pinging nukes then they might be safe in a bunker but when come out they rule over nothing. All that power gone.

MorbidBibliomancy · 08/08/2017 22:34

Yes, Trump can order a nuclear strike without getting the approval of Congress first. There's a chain of command (Trump tells Secretary of Defence, order gets passed along, etc) and any one of those people in the chain could, in theory, refuse. But the main part there is 'in theory', because as far as I can see they don't actually have any authority to shut the thing down themselves after the order is issued. They could maybe decide that they simply cannot comply, but there will always be others that have been trained to carry out orders regardless that can take their place.

The podcast Radiolab did an episode a while ago about this exact thing. It's worth listening if you want some more insight about the whole command and control thing.

SlothMama · 08/08/2017 22:34

Could that stupid man be impeached already, I'd rather not die because of his and that small dicked Korean's ego

Viviennemary · 08/08/2017 22:43

Bully. I've got a stick to hit you with. Other big kid. I've got a bigger stick I'll hit you. Whole school including teachers (ie UN) run and hides instead of dealing with it. That's about where we are. IMHO.

APMom · 08/08/2017 22:51

My dd is on the west coast of the US at the moment. I'd like her home. Another dd was on the east coast but she came home this morning. I think I'll start digging.

DorisMcSweeney · 08/08/2017 22:53

I have a few tins of beans and some long life milk, I think I'm sorted for the forthcoming nuclear apocalypse

Slimthistime · 08/08/2017 22:58

I wonder what the official advice is for anyone live broadcasting when the four minute warning goes

I reckon QVC would just keep going.

ChocDee · 08/08/2017 23:16

My best friend and my 3 year old god daughter is currently living in South Korea. I am worried. We have spoken about it in the past and I will definitely try and get hold of her tomorrow and clarify emergency procedures if the shit hits the fan for getting our little girl out of harms way. Her mother will have to stay because of the nature of her job...

WhollyFather · 08/08/2017 23:20

I know you all hate and fear Trump - posting the fake tweet not funny or helpful btw, Ovaries - but settle down. The BBC is not a reliable source of unbiased information on anything to do with Trump; I'd suggest a read of the linked WaPo article.

NK is run by madmen but they are not mad enough to launch against the USA, knowing (i) none of their few primitive missiles would get through, and (ii) the USA would reduce NK to a desert in retaliation. The Chinese would do nothing.

Maybe it is willy waving, but Trump has by far the biggest willy and he knows it. And so does KIm.

So don't fret.

DorisMcSweeney · 08/08/2017 23:23

This article is long but worth a read

www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/07/the-worst-problem-on-earth/528717/

In summary, there are four options, each of them shit, and doing nothing is probably the best of a bad bunch

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 08/08/2017 23:25

Wholly - yes I'm sure someone hacked Trump's twitter back in 2013 and wrote this message Hmm

The Dow jones is down.....0.15%

Clearly the markets don't believe a word of it

Viviennemary · 08/08/2017 23:45

That NK guy needs to be stopped. IMHO. He'll want to use his 'toys' eventually albeit on a small scale at first. Appeasement hasn't work well in the past. But agree they didn't have nuclear weapons then.

WattdeEll · 09/08/2017 00:41

All this is doing my anxiety no good.

TheRollingCrone · 09/08/2017 01:04

I'm hoping behind the scenes the Pentagon have Trump on a leash, and would just ignore the fucker;most of his officials seem to.

And I don't want to be all histrionic; but it seems unimaginable to me that we exist in a world that has thsee weapons and that at some point they will not be used.

Kursk · 09/08/2017 01:14

North Korea have 60 nuclear weapons, however they don't have missiles that can reach further than Japan and South Korea. The threat is minimal to the US or USA.

The most likely scenario would be a conventional airstike on North Korea's weapons factory
