We're fucking screwed 😱

Trump threatens 'fury' against N Korea
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40869319

OP posts:
Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 08/08/2017 21:29

Economic sanctions don't appear to be working, so how do you stop North Korea if you are the USA and they have a capability to hit your country with a nuclear warhead, assuming they do and it's not all a load of bollocks?

ThoseFemalesAreStrongAsHell · 08/08/2017 21:30

Fuck. This sort of shit really scares me

Fossilshavenomemory · 08/08/2017 21:31

What does Trump mean then?

What would unfold, I find it hard to imagine what this means. Please can someone explain?
I am not usually stupid but admit I am on this one

PacificDogwod · 08/08/2017 21:31

And Chris Pratt just became single! Bad timing.

Indeed.

orlantina · 08/08/2017 21:33

Trump's made a threat. A red line. If North Korea cross that red line, that line in the sand, Trump is going to do something using force. I think that's a given. He criticised Obama for not doing anything about Syria and chemical weapons.

I worry what he will do and how NK will react if the US retaliates to any further tests.

Bettercallsaul1 · 08/08/2017 21:37

This is exactly the scenario Michelle Obama warned about during the American election campaign - the danger of having an emotional, hot-headed, reckless individual with access to the nuclear codes.

pongoismyhero · 08/08/2017 21:38

Wow, massive overreactions and dramatisations on this thread. It's just willy waving; no need to be worried. Nukes will not be fired.

Agree.

Longdistance · 08/08/2017 21:38

Just duck and act British by having a nice cup of tea ☕️

CaveMum · 08/08/2017 21:40

Oh I know that doesn't mean we're all safe, but I made the point because I remember a thread a while back where the OP had genuine anxiety about the UK being hit in a direct nuclear strike.

As I pointed out then, there are only a handful of nuclear powers in the world, the majority of which we consider allies, so the likelihood of a direct strike on the UK is very small.

The matter of fallout and nuclear winter is a whole other subject.

Caenea · 08/08/2017 21:40

Fossils it's literally a "my dick is bigger than your dick" contest.

All Trump means is that he will find something to do if North Korea actually launch a warhead with malicious intent. He probably doesn't know what this is. He simply feels obliged to posture.

IF both countries actually do launch and IF both missiles find their targets? Massive loss of life. Asia and environs would suffer terribly, as would the US. For the UK? Nuclear winter, radiation to a lesser or greater extent. Think Hiroshima/Nagasaki, but on much larger scales.

However, please bear in mind that it is not Trump's decision to make. As a previous poster mentioned, Congress would have the final say.

We have been here before: The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world has come to nuclear war and that was all a cocks on the table scenario. It didn't happen then, it's very unlikely to happen now.

LittleLionMansMummy · 08/08/2017 21:40

I picked a fucking bad week to watch Threads for the first time.

Spuddington · 08/08/2017 21:42

mummy you really did.

PacificDogwod · 08/08/2017 21:43

I have this theory that All Of Life's Conflicts can be explained if regarded as a Pissing Contest.

This is a prime example.

Shame it's Dicks with WMD... Hmm

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 08/08/2017 21:43

A few months ago I read something about a theory by a scientist (or sociologist?), Italian, I think, along the lines of: the fact that we have found no life on other planets could be due to alien civilisations political structures not having kept up with scientific progress. I.e. those civilisations were advanced enough to create weapons of mass destruction but could not manage them and ended up self-destructing.

I have probably explained it all wrong but it gave me food for thought Sad

Apart from that I really feel for the people of North Korea. They deserve a good, normal life just like everyone else but the man at the top has such control that I cannot see how regime change could come around. Bizarrely enough perhaps the only hope is the craving for cheap plastic tat - Chinese tourists are allowed to visit North Korea and I am hoping that seeing their relative affluence will make North Koreans think that perhaps all is not well in their country and that things could be better without their Dear Leader.

Fossilshavenomemory · 08/08/2017 21:45

Thank you Caenea. Hope you are right with it being a 'cocks on the table scenario', which in itself is a gruelling thought Envy

ItsNachoCheese · 08/08/2017 21:47

Fuuuuck! The world as we know it is over if these two fannies start playing WMD tit for tat

MargaretTwatyer · 08/08/2017 21:48

May I please ask more politically savvy posters here, how come the UK and US cam down hard on Iraq's alleged WMD but stand by as NK is launching missile after missile and allegedly close to being a nuclear power?

Because NK is backed by China who are a major power and who the US are not prepared to take on. Iraq didn't have a powerful protector like that. NKs shenanigans are also useful for China as it means the US have to play nice with them to get them to lean on NK and keep Kim Jong Un on a leash.

I agree with posters saying this is an over reaction. This is putting pressure on the Chinese to deal with him rather than a genuine threat. NK is actually thought more realistically to be 10 years away from actually developing missiles which will hit the US mainland so there is no imminent danger.

CockacidalManiac · 08/08/2017 21:50

If you think that it's bad that washing gets darked on, wait until it gets radiated on.

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 08/08/2017 21:50

The Economist isn't known for being alarmist yet this week's edition is running a leader "It could happen" with another terrifyingly plausible article alongside Everyone Would Lose: How Nuclear War In Korea Could Start And How It Might End

Caenea · 08/08/2017 21:51

No worries Fossils

And the problem with assassinating Kim Jong Un is that it would be the same issue as began in Iraq after Saddam's removal...

The power vacuum left behind by the toppling of a despot is frequently filled by extremism - witness the Taliban, ISIS and Osama Bin Laden. We can't charge in and take out Kim unless we're prepared to commit to helping the country rehabilitate afterwards and of course we won't be bothered with all that.

See you up on the moors. I'll be the one in the Traffic Warden outfit with a bandage on my face.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 08/08/2017 21:54

I think that the reason nobody is touching North Korea is because it's too volatile. Any attack, invasion or ideological infiltration could trigger a meltdown by Dr No which would mean missile attacks on third countries (Japan) with serious loss of life.

In Iraq there were several factions and at least part of the population supported foreign intervention. Very different in North Korea. also they have no oil

wrenika · 08/08/2017 21:55

Not worth worrying about. It's dick waving on all sides and lets face it, if they start something, there's sod all we can do about it.

I doubt we're all going to be wiped out. And if we are, you can find my ghostly bits and say 'I told you so'.

PoppyPopcorn · 08/08/2017 22:03

It's weirdly quiet on social media apart from Jack Monroe on twitter

Although Jack Monroe thinks she's a legend in her own lunchtime I hardly think she has inside information or a hotline to either Donald or the Kim bloke.

Trump is all hot air. As my dad would say, he opens his mouth and lets his belly rumble. Congress aren't going to allow him to do anything that stupid.
