I live alone with my children. I am a single mother. My baby is quite difficult ATM and seems to be cluster feeding so I'm always awake quite late. She finally drifted off about an hour ago so I have been cleaning non stop since. Anyway I've been up and down the stairs putting rubbish out etc. anyway I came back upstairs and my door knocked, this was literally 10 mins ago. Obviously I got quite scared due to how late it is. They knocked about 3 times then left. Didn't knock any other doors. I can't be 100% sure but I thought I heard what sounded like a police radio. Would you have answered?! Wibu? I wanna point out now that a few months ago this same thing happened when I was heavily pregnant. I woke up in the middle of the night went toilet came back and lied in bed and my door knocked, it was roughly the same time. I know no one that would knock, or who would just show up.

If I heard what I thought was a police radio is have either looked out the window for a car or called through the door to ask who it was.

stella23 · 07/08/2017 00:30

No I wouldn't answer, but I would sleep with the lights on

FoxyinherRoxy · 07/08/2017 00:31

You poor thing! No, I wouldn't have answered. But then I don't answer the door in the daytime either.

Double check everything is secure and make a brew. Spend 10 minutes being calm before you go to bed. It will pass.

Redglitter · 07/08/2017 00:31

If you do think it was the police I'd phone 101 and explain and ask them to confirm if it was police officers

AnnieAnoniMouse · 07/08/2017 00:31

I'd call 101 & let them know, tell them you're on your own & scared, they'll pop past if/when they can.

If you were my friend I'd hope you'd ring me & I'd come and stay the night.

C0untDucku1a · 07/08/2017 00:31

That sould have freaked me out. i wouldnt have answered and would pribably have been too scared to look out if the window too.

amermaideindesguise · 07/08/2017 00:33

that would have scared me aswll op.

Notmyrealname85 · 07/08/2017 00:34

On our old street, burglars used to ring doorbells to see who was home. That was during the day though when people were out!

Please report to the police! Can you afford even a cheap camera for outside? Anything that would put off an intruder

Dancingfairy · 07/08/2017 00:38

I didn't look out the window as the two front windows one is the babies which the light was still on so they would have seen me and the other is my sons room but he doesn't have nets up only curtains. I think I heard a radio but I can't be 100% sure as I froze! Was literally standing in the hall way. I don't get unnannouced visitors in the day let alone at night. It actually woke my son (terribly light sleeper) and so I asked him if he heard it and he said "yes it was a man you know cause you heard it" think he was wondering why I was asking him.

MunchMunch · 07/08/2017 00:38

I'd have looked out of the window.

I have had someone knocking on my door once at about 4am as it was starting to get light. I answered because I'd just had a downstairs extension done which contains my bedroom and my dc are upstairs, dd especially is very anxious so if they carried on knocking they'd have woken her and I know she'd be an absolute wreck!

The two blokes knocking had a can of larger each and thought they were knocking on a relations door, they apologised and left.

rightwhine · 07/08/2017 00:49

Maybe it was the police thinking you were a burglar going up and down the stairs. Then on closer inspection realised it was fine? Or are still watching in case they can catch the supposed burglar red handed?

Ring the non emergency line.

Dancingfairy · 07/08/2017 00:52

I opened the door several times to put rubbish out so they would have seen me. I'm dressed in my pjs with no shoes on. I don't know whether to call or not as don't wanna waste there time.

Think you should check with Police to see if they have called at your house or have something going on in your area.

It might be a genuine person with the wrong number in the street and seeing your lights on thought this house was where they were meant to go. However I would make a point of making sure the doors are all locked and if ground floor all windows are shut and locked.
It is strange that it should happen twice. It is not unknown. Try to find out info from police they do understand that women alone can get scared. They will likely drive past a few times

namechanger2735 · 07/08/2017 00:54

101

Deux · 07/08/2017 00:56

Are you in a flat in a block or a house?

Either way, I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to call 101 and express your fear. I agree with PP that the police are attentive to lone females, especially so with kids in the house.

Pineappleandcheeseonsticks · 07/08/2017 00:57

The police would say it was them if they were knocking. I would phone 101. Do you have anyone who could come over if you're feeling worried?

Dancingfairy · 07/08/2017 00:58

The first time I told a few people due to the time I was pretty surprised any one would knock and someone said maybe it was just a take away delivery guy who got the wrong address so I thought nothing more of it... Until now I think they must be connects cause it was also around midnight.

Its a flat, well maisonette. no entry system you can just walk in. The kitchen light was on so would have been obvious I was in.

Motoko · 07/08/2017 01:04

Perhaps with all the going up and downstairs, and going in and out, you disturbed a neighbour, and they were knocking to ask you to keep the noise down?

If you're worried, ring 101.

Witchend · 07/08/2017 01:04

Leaving lights on isn't necessarily the best idea because they can look like security lights left on permanently while you are away.
That's what the police say round here.

Dancingfairy · 07/08/2017 01:05

There's houses not directly opposite but to the side, there's a children's centre/library opposite across the road.

GlitteryFluff · 07/08/2017 01:06

Would have freaked me out too.
I don't know what I'd do.
I'd just be careful about going outside so late at night. Leave rubbish piled by door to take out in the morning etc.

intergalacticbrexitdisco · 07/08/2017 01:06

Could it be a neighbour? Perhaps wondering about the noises?
