Apparently my husband Dosent and " why would I " Hmm
And the Lords Prayer is " all brainwashing bollox anyway " along with his theory That the christian church and the Catholic church are brainwashing bollox that sacrifice goats
I'm actually very disappointed in him
the Lords Prayer was said in primary school by the majority of primary school pupils right ? It was as commonplace as singing hymns
Admittedly I don't know the WHOLE of the National Anthem but I know the first verse at least
I find his attitude just fucking pig ignorant and down right rude
He's 46 years old for Christ sakes he's not 20 where it's probably not the done thing now

I know the Lord's Prayer from my non religious primary school, I then learned the slightly amended version at my Catholic school. I also know them all in Welsh - Ein Tad, Henfych Well Mair, and whatever Glory Be was in Welsh!

I know the Welsh and British national anthems - we learned the Welsh one aged 5 in assembly after practicing it for weeks on end. I assumed the English did the same with theirs/ours but apparently not. It's not exactly a tricky anthem..!

GherkinSnatch · 06/08/2017 22:54

Apparently it's renowned as the party town of pilgrimage sites.

That made me snort in the most undignified manner, and woke up DD who I've been trying failing to get to sleep for the past 3 hours...

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:54

Triskel I think you're Edna O'Brien! Grin

Good woman Edel O'Rourke finding carnal pleasure on a LoM outing.

JasmineGreen · 06/08/2017 22:54

I wish they would change the national anthem.

Ellie56 · 06/08/2017 22:55

I went to a C of E school. We learnt the Lord's Prayer, The Apostles Creed, The Venite, the Te Deum and the Nunc Dimittus, all of which were mind numbingly tedious.

At secondary school we only had to say the Lord's Prayer My friend thought it was:

"Our Father who art in Heaven
Harold be thy name..." Grin

Buthewasstillhungry · 06/08/2017 22:56

Ellie I though it was Harold too!!

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:56

I had a friend who went to Lourdes and said she was out partying every night. Apparently it's renowned as the party town of pilgrimage sites.

Grin Grin

I love that there's a secret league table of these things!

Lourdes - 10/10 hole guaranteed
Fatima - 7/10 too many nuns standing guard but worth persisting all the same

Medjugorje - 5/10 only action is from auld lads of 60.

Backingvocals · 06/08/2017 22:57

I know both but I think that's standard for my age - 48. At least the LP. We were taught it in primary school as the one prayer you had to know. It's very deeply embedded - I'd forget my address before I'd forget the LP. And I am an atheist.

GOd save the queen - well I know it well enough to sing the first verse. Not that I ever have.

Surprised so many don't - obvs not those who had other religions or don't think of themselves as British. But I would have thought your average Brit would know them, like me. Times are changing.

TriskelArts · 06/08/2017 22:58

I know Edna slightly. She is more than 40 years older than me and has nicer skin. Edel O'Rourke is now a highly respectable primary school teacher -- possibly with a lingering kink for those holy water bottles where Our Lady's blue plastic crown screws off. Grin

Balfe · 06/08/2017 23:00

Sorry Gherkin. Hope she's off soon.

Rome must rank up there with the fast set of pilgrims. The only time a gentleman I did not know personally has felt up my bottom was in the line to the Vatican.

NameChanger22 · 06/08/2017 23:00

I know both of them. I really dislike both of them, they're so dreary and sinister.

GherkinSnatch · 06/08/2017 23:03

The Vatican was good, I went with school when I was 13. Not much option for shenanigans though, other than sunbathing in the square rather than doing the full Basilica tour.

I'd say it gets a 6/10 - with two points being added for proximity to the Pope, and four points being added for the abundance of ice cream vans with JP2 on them.

DaviesMum · 06/08/2017 23:05

Neither being a god or queen to me (as an athiest and republican), I wouldn't know the words to either.

Now, unclutch the pearls before you asphyxiate, OP.

Fresh8008 · 06/08/2017 23:11

I know the first line, "God save the Queen", the rest fuck knows.

The lords prayers? I am in my late forties brought and up christian but haven't the foggiest. Hasn't been force fed to children for a looong time, and thank god for that.

Probably could have a stab at the star spangled banner though, its on TV all the time.

ellestyle · 06/08/2017 23:12

What a load of crap the national anthem is, why are we asking God to "save our queen", she's no more important than any of us.

Balfe · 06/08/2017 23:17

I was 15. Remember being traipsed around Rome in full woollen school uniform. You must have been able to smell us before you saw us.

Now has anyone been to Guadalupe?

GherkinSnatch · 06/08/2017 23:18

elle saying that in front of royalty is how an existential crisis happens.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 23:21

Triskel I love Edna, well her early stuff at least. Haven't read much of her more recent works.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 23:23

I suppose they're conflicted, pious and demure on the one had, red blooded Italian on the other. They're bound to lapse at times.

PeachPearPotato · 06/08/2017 23:24

Dosent? I really hate pedants usually, but does he understand what you hate?

IJustLostTheGame · 06/08/2017 23:24

Does Madonna know about the Lourdes being a party town?

thegreylady · 06/08/2017 23:26

7 of my 9 grandchildren know the Lord's Prayer . Of those 7 five are Roman Catholic and the other two go to a CoE primary school. The remaining two are one Muslim living in Turkey and an eleven year old with asd and speech delay.

Zarah123 · 06/08/2017 23:26

You're disappointed that he doesn't know the Lord's prayer and thinks the Christian church and Catholic Church is bollocks but you take Christ's name in vain? I'm not even Christian but I think that's ignorant and rude.

skinnymalinkmalojin · 06/08/2017 23:30

I went to a Church of Ireland primary and a Catholic secondary. The nuns were horrified that I carried on with 'For thine is the kingdom.....'. I didn't know it was different. I only learned the Irish National Anthem in secondary school as well as the Hail Mary and the Our Father in both French and Irish Grin

raspberrysuicide · 06/08/2017 23:38

I can recite the Lords Prayer even now because we said it everyday in junior school. However I know the old version and the new one which is slightly different I have to actually look at and read because otherwise I automatically say the old one. I'm 46 and only started going to church 18 months ago
