I'm actually very disappointed in him
the Lords Prayer was said in primary school by the majority of primary school pupils right ? It was as commonplace as singing hymns
Admittedly I don't know the WHOLE of the National Anthem but I know the first verse at least
I find his attitude just fucking pig ignorant and down right rude
He's 46 years old for Christ sakes he's not 20 where it's probably not the done thing now

I know the lords prayer, in a particular class in primary school we weren't allowed to leave at the end of the day until the whole class had said it perfectly.

I have no idea what the national anthem is.. I know the US one though Grin (I'm english)

BartholinsSister · 07/08/2017 00:02

I don't need to know the Lords Prayer, as I don't have an invisible friend.

reetgood · 07/08/2017 00:11

I can confirm that Lourdes is indeed a party pilgrimage town.

I know the Lord's Prayer but that's a bit odd, considering I went to a secular high school and had never been to a church service before I was 16. I've always been interested though. I did have to confirm to my then teenaged sister that Christmas did indeed have 'something to do with jesus'. I think that it's a secular country, and unless you're interested you prob won't pick up on the niceties of various religions.

I only know the first verse of the English anthem. I know most of the words to a number of excellent musicals though...

CanadaMoose91 · 07/08/2017 00:12

We used to sing the Canadian national anthem in English, French and sign language from kindergarten through high school. I don't know the British one(s). And like FindingShark I am also Jewish and don't know the Lord's Prayer.

ApricotExpat · 07/08/2017 00:16

I'm late 30's and even having been made to go to 'chapel' 6 days a week, with an atheist tolerating school chaplain, I can't remember the Lords Prayer (neither do I wish to but I just tested myself!).

However, the National Anthem - no problem!

liz70 · 07/08/2017 00:21

The Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Magnificat, yep, still know them all. They're ingrained from school.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 07/08/2017 00:33

I know the Lord's Prayer although I now attend a different flavour of Church to the one I was raised in and say it differently to the rest of the congregation.

A lot of my schooling was done in British Forces schools abroad so I know all the verses of the National Anthem too. One of our music teachers was obsessed by anthems and deemed learning all the verses crucial to our education.

CancellyMcChequeface · 07/08/2017 00:34

I went to Catholic school and so know the Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, and various other prayers and hymns. We had to say the Angelus far too often for my liking too. I wouldn't expect anyone who isn't or wasn't raised Christian to know Christian prayers - unless they were interested in it, why would they?

I know the first verse of the National Anthem. I remember learning it as a child and thinking the Queen must live a very dangerous life if everyone is always praying to God to save her! I also know there's a bit in it about crushing rebellious Scots. Apparently. As an atheist republican, I don't sing it any more. I do know the words to the US National Anthem and various other songs like 'America the Beautiful' because I had an interest in American history/culture as a teenager.

Scotstar · 07/08/2017 00:35

I'm 35 and wouldn't be able to recite either one. I didn't learn them in school. Same with my husband eho is 32. I think you are the ignorant one. Also just because your his and doesn't share your opinion it doesn't mean he is wrong. Poor man.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 07/08/2017 00:39

How can you only know the first verse of Flower of Scotland?!

I don't know even the first verse. I'm never going to be anywhere it will be sung (and if I were I wouldn't bother pretending awful dirge)

rightwhine · 07/08/2017 00:53

I know TLP from recruiting it every day at school. I don't know the NA or Auld Lang Syne.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 07/08/2017 00:59

^Forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive them that trespass against us^

Neither husband nor I believe in a god but 35 years and counting we still argue about which version is correct (it's this one)

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 07/08/2017 01:02

I don't know the Lords Prayer or the National Anthem...

I also don't know Auld Lang Syne.

But I know the whole of Flower of Scotland. (Really a pretty terrible song to teach kids at school.)

Fluffyears · 07/08/2017 01:15

I went to a non-denomination school so never recited any prayers although we did celebrate Christmas and Easter and got taught about them.

I refuse to recognise a racist dirge as my national anthem, also why does England use it in flirting matches if it is the anthem for the UK? England is not the full U.K. Can we change the anthem to something better?

skinnymalinkmalojin · 07/08/2017 01:35

Having said what I said before, my husband was horrified to see me cross myself with the wrong hand on entering a church, while I thought I was being very pious. I'm not a church goer and find myself embarrassed when I have to attend. Communion time is my biggest conundrum.Church etiquette lessons are definitely required.

Passthespanner · 07/08/2017 01:55

Catholic school (and altar girl!) so know the prayer, but I stopped singing the national anthem in secondary school as I thought it was ridiculous, so can't remember anything apart from the first two lines of it.

araiwa · 07/08/2017 04:50

I just tried both

Lords prayer took a few attempts and is a bit hazy. National anthem i can do the first few lines but i never recall ever singing it only hearing it

TheMaddHugger · 07/08/2017 04:53

Congratulations, You Know the Lord's Prayer but Still use Our Lord's Name as a curse??

sashh · 07/08/2017 06:37

I only know the Lords Prayer from the couple of years I wasn't at RC schools. The Our Father is different.

I know (trying to remember now) the Hail Mary (English and French), Salve Regina (Latin and English) the Angelus and probably a whole lot more.

It's just taking up space in my brain and I don't expect anyone else to know these. My brother also went to RC schools but his was a bit more relaxed so although he still believes and goes to mass I don't think he has ever even heard the Angelus, at my school we had an 'Angelus bell' that rang 5 mins before lunch so we all recited it.

GunnyHighway · 07/08/2017 07:11

Interesting how many people think that there's an English national anthem. Last time I checked it was the national anthem of Great Britain.

LakieLady · 07/08/2017 07:16

I thought I knew the Lord's Prayer, it having been dinned into me at school, but I have just tried and can't remember the last bit, just before "amen".

I only know the first verse of the national anthem, and I'm a republican so would never sing it anyway.

I regard them both as outdated bollocks.

Unihorn · 07/08/2017 07:21

Gunny it is also the English national anthem though. Last time I checked the English teams sang it at sporting events?

Eolian · 07/08/2017 07:23

I'm an atheist and a republican but would consider the Lord's Prayer and the first verse of the national anthem to be general knowledge for an adult English person (certainly one who is old enough to have been a child in the 70s). Not sure why you find his lack of knowledge of these specific things quite so infuriating though, OP, unless you're religious or a staunch royalist. Admittedly though, the way you've quoted him does make him sound pretty ignorant.

GunnyHighway · 07/08/2017 07:29

unihorn The English sing it because there is no official English anthem.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 07/08/2017 07:32

We did the Lords Prayer at achool. Couldn't recite it now; I've long since forgotten it (late twenties).

I also only know a bit of the National Anthem.

Your DH is right about the brainwashing.
