Apparently my husband Dosent and " why would I " Hmm
And the Lords Prayer is " all brainwashing bollox anyway " along with his theory That the christian church and the Catholic church are brainwashing bollox that sacrifice goats
I'm actually very disappointed in him
the Lords Prayer was said in primary school by the majority of primary school pupils right ? It was as commonplace as singing hymns
Admittedly I don't know the WHOLE of the National Anthem but I know the first verse at least
I find his attitude just fucking pig ignorant and down right rude
He's 46 years old for Christ sakes he's not 20 where it's probably not the done thing now

*I would probably say it at a funeral, thinking about it, but i meant more out of some sense of "patriotism" or whatever at an event.

DonaldStott · 06/08/2017 22:36

I know the lords prayer because I went to catholic primary and senior schools. It was indoctrinated. I didn't understand what I was repeating parrot fashion.

Not a clue regarding the national anthem apart from the first verse, as it makes me feel ill. I a republican and the servitude of it turns my stomach.

ZippyCameBack · 06/08/2017 22:36

I have refused to sing the "national" anthem since I was 8, so I probably couldn't manage all the words to that. I can say both (long and short) versions of the Our Father in Latin, English and probably (Scottish) Gaelic.
I didn't so much learn the Our Father at school though, as at Sunday school. The Latin version I found out for myself because I wanted to and the Gaelic I picked up in church.

Balfe · 06/08/2017 22:36

Yes, possibly more the Music Man (what can you plaaay)

I don't know the Lords Prayer, Why would I?

Happyhappyveggie · 06/08/2017 22:38

Like a few on here I can belt out Hen wlad fy nhadau all day long.

And I do know the Lord's Prayer.

God save the queen- I know it but it has no real meaning for me because I see Hen wlad fy nhadau as my anthem

BertieBotts · 06/08/2017 22:38

I roughly know the Lord's Prayer despite not being religious and I don't remember it being said in school (90s) - I think that it's quite a poignant cultural point of reference. A little girl at DS's school was very sadly killed this year by a relative and at her memorial service at school the Lord's Prayer was read out and I found it quite emotional. Not in my language (we live abroad) but it surprised me because I could pretty much follow along. I think that kind of traditional cultural thing is so strong and quite precious actually. It's a shame that it's in short supply outside of religion but it's one of the factors of religion that I get some meaning from.

I don't know the national anthem.

nikiforov · 06/08/2017 22:38

I also don't care a tot about the Queen, just to annoy OP even more Grin

JasmineGreen · 06/08/2017 22:41

Bertie, I find it very moving to witness other people in group acts of faith, despite not being religious myself.

The thousands of years of history behind it and connection to others, both from the past and from all over the world now is a major part of it.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:42

am still word perfect on the Memorare from my distant youth being frogmarched out the door to the Legion of Mary.

A friend of mine joined the Legion of Mary to meet boys. Grin I don't know what she was thinking as the LoM is hardly known for being populated by hot teenage boys. Grin

So she left and joined the St John's Ambulance instead where she was more successful in getting her hole meeting some nice young men.

*DAH DAH de du di di di DAH DAH DAH DAH

Isn't that the dambusters?
I think it's Here Comes the Bride.*

Honestly! Can none of you read music?

The Dambusters goes:

DAAH DAH di DAH da di da da

While Here Comes The Bride is:

DAH DA di DAH

What we have here is clearly Lavender's Blue Dilly Dilly

(I know both the LP and GSTQ but then I am 55 and you did learn these things at school then. Kind of surprised someone of 46 wouldn't have learnt them)

LuluJakey1 · 06/08/2017 22:44

I know The Lord's Prayer and God Save the Queen- only the first verse and chorus.
I think they are just some of a list of things I said so many times aloud or have heard so many times that I have learned them - like the Hail Mary, I Vow to Thee My Country, Jerusalem etc

alltouchedout · 06/08/2017 22:44

I know the first verse of GSTQ. I just checked to see if my memory of the Lord's Prayer was right and ended up spending too much time reading about all the different versions and translations and traditions on Wikipedia. I remember the version I was taught, anyway.

Cuntysnark · 06/08/2017 22:45

If it matters to you, then it matters to you. Otherwise live & let live. I don't give a flying fuck either way but could probably recite with a gun against my head but only if...

GrumpyOldMare · 06/08/2017 22:45

I don't know either,I'm Pagan so that could explain the prayer and am not bothered about ''god'' saving the Queen either.

squoosh · 06/08/2017 22:47

Oh I love Jersualem and that's definitely not one I grew up with. Gorgeous tune and I love all the satanic mills imagery. Vow to thee my country is lovely and soaring too.

Balfe · 06/08/2017 22:47

A friend of mine joined the Legion of Mary to meet boys.

Oh that's made my night Grin Grin Grin hilarious Grin

Parker231 · 06/08/2017 22:49

I'm sure we did the Lords Prayer at school but can only remember joke versions. I know the first couple of lines of God Save The Queen.

stillvicarinatutu · 06/08/2017 22:49

i know the lords prayer, but the only version i know of god save the queen is the sex pistols version - im quite happy with that!

TriskelArts · 06/08/2017 22:49

No jollies at the Legion of Mary, squoosh. Grin We dared each other to hold our fingers in candle flames for the duration of a Hail Mary, sold the Irish Catholic to nuns after Mass, prayed for the St Joseph's Young Priests' Society, and went to Knock with the altar boys once, where Edel O'Rourke got some tongue from a Mayo boy behind a gift shop, the hussy.

foodiefil · 06/08/2017 22:50

I know the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary. Not catholic but went to a catholic school. Think I know the national anthem. Not obligatory - depends on your upbringing

Hermagsjesty · 06/08/2017 22:50

Definitely didn't say prayers at my school - just a normal state school - I'm 35. And we're half Jewish so didn't learn the Lords Prayer at home either. I did have to read the bible during my degree weirdly enough but still not to recite from memory.

And I only know the first couple of lines of God Save the Queen.

AgentCooper · 06/08/2017 22:50

I know the Our Father (Catholic version) but could not sing you beyond the first line of GSTQ. Have never sung it, never been in a situation where I'd have to and would be strongly contradicting my republican beliefs I did Grin

Balfe · 06/08/2017 22:52

and went to Knock with the altar boys once, where Edel O'Rourke got some tongue from a Mayo boy behind a gift shop, the hussy

Trollop.

I had a friend who went to Lourdes and said she was out partying every night. Apparently it's renowned as the party town of pilgrimage sites.
