Apparently my husband Dosent and " why would I " Hmm
And the Lords Prayer is " all brainwashing bollox anyway " along with his theory That the christian church and the Catholic church are brainwashing bollox that sacrifice goats
I'm actually very disappointed in him
the Lords Prayer was said in primary school by the majority of primary school pupils right ? It was as commonplace as singing hymns
Admittedly I don't know the WHOLE of the National Anthem but I know the first verse at least
I find his attitude just fucking pig ignorant and down right rude
He's 46 years old for Christ sakes he's not 20 where it's probably not the done thing now

I have to say I am pretty surprised that so many people don't know the Lord's prayer/Our Father (but the reasons given make sense) but I'm flabbergasted that so many people not only don't know the words to the 'English' national anthem but don't even know which song the anthem refers to!

squoosh · 07/08/2017 10:39

But then I remember being really surprised that loads of people didn't know the dates of WWI and WWII. The reason usually given being 'I didn't study history in school'. I thought it was near impossible to not know basic facts like that just by living here.

BoysofMelody · 07/08/2017 10:52

Squoosh dates are overrated. I teach history and whilst one does not preclude the other, I would far rather someone had an understanding of the causes of the two world wars and the events that preceded/followed them, than knowing that Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1839.

squoosh · 07/08/2017 11:09

I'm sure you're right but I'm still surprised that 1939-1945 isn't just lodged in British people's heads as one of those basic facts.

zukiecat · 07/08/2017 11:15

I'm Pagan and I know The Lords Prayer

I know the first verse of God Save The Queen,

Word perfect on Flower of Scotland!

Fresh8008 · 07/08/2017 11:16

Have seen several posters saying they know different versions of the gods prayer. How is this possible? I thought he wrote them down on stone and gave them to Noah before flooding the world. Aren't the words literally set in stone?

zukiecat · 07/08/2017 11:18

The headmaster at my Secondary School was obsessed with Lord of The Dance

Had to sing it every Friday morning at Assembly

squoosh · 07/08/2017 11:20

The Lord of the Dance is a good jolly one. Grin

Dance, dance wherever you may be......

squoosh · 07/08/2017 11:20

Reminds me of Michael Flatley now though.

Not so jolly.

DaisysStew · 07/08/2017 11:21

The one I know is: Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

I've just googled and apparently some versions say debt and debtors instead of trespass. I've never heard that one before.

zukiecat · 07/08/2017 11:22

Bemused

I was raised on the music of The Corries, when they sang Lord of The Dance I thought they were singing "I'll eat you all wherever you may be"

Wasn't until I started Secondary that I realised it was "Lead you all"

squoosh · 07/08/2017 11:23

You know the Catholic version Daisy.

I'd never heard the debtor thing either.

zukiecat · 07/08/2017 11:24

Aww squoosh

I like Michael Flatley Grin

squoosh · 07/08/2017 11:32

You like Michael Flatley? Grin

The Lord of the Prance? But what about the peroxide mullet, the silky blousons cut down to the navel, the gargantuan ego, the jigging about?

Grin
To think EVERYONE knows the Lords Prayer and the National Anthem right ?
EmotionalTeaspoon · 07/08/2017 11:32

Just tried to sing the national anthem...it went

"God save our gracious Queen
Long live our hmm hmm Queen
God save the Queen.
Something and orious
Happy and something us
Long to reign over us
God Save The Queen!"

So no, I don't really know even the first verse.

Weird thing to get your knickers in a twist about though. If he's not a Christian it's not exactly important that he knows the Lords Prayer is it? And our national anthem is crap. Second the poster upthread who always think of Billy Connelly in these situations. "Lala lala lala la, dum dee dum dee dido, lala lala lala la, rumtee tiddly di!" (theme to the Archers. Much easier lyrics).

zukiecat · 07/08/2017 11:36

Grinsquoosh

I know, but can't help it,

I know he's a poser with a massive ego, but I still like him

Maybe I should join a support group

squoosh · 07/08/2017 11:37

Oh my God.

You fancy Flatley!

BabyBongos · 07/08/2017 11:40

God save our gracious queen, nernernenerna, God save our queen. Erm..no that's all I know Grin

JennyBlueWren · 07/08/2017 11:41

I'm a Christian and I know several different versions of the Lord's Prayer. Our chapel and school used different versions. When I cam up to Scotland I have found almost every church (slight exageration) to be using slightly different versions.

I know the National Anthem verse about crushing the Scots!

Spudlet · 07/08/2017 11:43

Bemused

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/08/03/escaped-harris-hawks-attacking-runners-walkers-prompting-fears/. Shock

Eagles and their relatives are very pointy creatures, I think your version was more sensible!

horsefeathers · 07/08/2017 11:43

God save our something Queen
Na na na naaa na Queen
Blah something Queen
Send her victorious
Hooblededorious
Something else orious
God save the Queen

Gwlad! Gwlad! Pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad!

And I did pick up the Lord's Prayer from somewhere but it wasn't school.

Elephant17 · 07/08/2017 11:49

I don't know either.

Not religious and singing the national anthem is not something I've ever needed to do in day to day life, so I'm not familiar enough with it to know the lyrics.

paradoxicalInterruption · 07/08/2017 11:53

O land of our birth,
O gem of God's earth,
O Island so strong and so fair;
Built firm as Barrule,
Thy Throne of Home Rule
Makes us free as thy sweet mountain air.

And the British National Anthem.

Lords Prayer - went to a Church School - so yes I know it.

I think I'd expect most people to be able to sing along to GSTQ - as its played so bloody often. Lords Prayer - not so much.

NipInTheAir · 07/08/2017 11:56

Yes I do. And I vow to three my country and Jerusalem.

I'm half Jewish. My father escaped the hocaust arriving here when he was ten. His advice: "blend".

One of my DC is gay. I have no issue with it but I do wish she didn't have an open digital footprint and ignores my advice not to to put prefer not to say on forms. If ISIS take over the world, I fear for her.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 07/08/2017 12:00

I loathe religion, patriotism and the Royals. I am more disturbed by the fact that somehow l know these piles of crap.

I refuse to sing the National Anthem if l'm ever in a situation where l would have to (not that l ever am). The Lord's Prayer never crosses my lips even though unfortunately l know it

My choice of anthem for England would be Jerusalem
