Apparently my husband Dosent and " why would I " Hmm
And the Lords Prayer is " all brainwashing bollox anyway " along with his theory That the christian church and the Catholic church are brainwashing bollox that sacrifice goats
I'm actually very disappointed in him
the Lords Prayer was said in primary school by the majority of primary school pupils right ? It was as commonplace as singing hymns
Admittedly I don't know the WHOLE of the National Anthem but I know the first verse at least
I find his attitude just fucking pig ignorant and down right rude
He's 46 years old for Christ sakes he's not 20 where it's probably not the done thing now

The Dambusters March would make a good national anthem imo.

Most national anthems are a bit of a dirge, when I think about it. The Marseillaise is good (especially the rude version) and the Italian one has a nice jaunty tune, but most of them are just dull.

Amanduh · 07/08/2017 07:35

There's no official English or Scottish anthem. Just the National (British) one. Anyway, I can see why someone wouldn't know the Lord's Prayer. I'd expect them to know the anthem

OnionKnight · 07/08/2017 07:36

I don't know the Lord's Prayer and I'd struggle to recite the national anthem, my family isn't religious and at primary school we didn't really recite anything like that.

BroomstickOfLove · 07/08/2017 07:40

I agree that they are part of basic general knowledge that I would expect an adult raised in the UK to know.

I have happy memories of sneaking off for illicit drinking with some Belgian scouts when I went to Lourdes, but it was an (atheist) family holiday rather than a school trip.

TheNaze73 · 07/08/2017 07:43

Know the national anthem but, not a clue about the Lord's Prayer.

Quick q. If your dc go to Church of England school do they know the Lords Prayer? Say it everyday in assembly? Dd aged 9 will be going to a Church of England in September. Should she crack on and learn it?

cdtaylornats · 07/08/2017 08:08

Your DH is right about the brainwashing.

Brainwashing is standing up every day and pledging allegiance to the flag.

orlantina · 07/08/2017 08:09

We did the Lords Prayer at primary and secondary. So I know it. Not a Christian.

God Save the Queen. Ex RAF kid - so it was regularly sung. We even had it at the end of the cinema after the film finished. Don't like it but I know it.

Jerusalem - because I was told to write it out 10 times as a punishment. That kind of school.

And the formula for quadratic equations. Very useful now for teaching maths.

orlantina · 07/08/2017 08:10

Should she crack on and learn it

I am sure she'll pick it up.

gamerwidow · 07/08/2017 08:14

I know both but I'm not teaching them to my DD because I'm an atheist and I'm not a royalist. Why would you care about either unless Christianity or the monarchy is important to you.

Eolian · 07/08/2017 08:37

You don't have to believe in something to know about it. Being an atheist and a republican doesn't mean that it's a good thing to be ignorant of culture and history - and religion is part of that whether you believe in god or not. I want my children to have a rounded education, and part of that education is knowing about what other people believe and about human culture and heritage.

Wheelycote · 07/08/2017 08:41

Nope n nope. Know the jist of them

hackmum · 07/08/2017 08:44

The very first thing I learnt off by heart was the Lord's Prayer in Welsh. I still find it strangely soothing in times of trouble. I also know it in English, of course.

God Save the Queen hasn't got very complicated lyrics. I'd be surprised if most people didn't pick it up at some point.

MidnightAura · 07/08/2017 08:45

I have no idea what the Lord's Prayer is. Never did it at school. I don't know the words to God save the queen as I've never actually been in a position where I've had to sing it luckily. My mum would have killed me!

skibop · 07/08/2017 08:52

This is hilarious. Why is it 'down right rude' that he doesn't know them? Rude to who, the Queen?!

StepAwayFromCake · 07/08/2017 08:54

I'm not Christian, and I went to my religion's faith primary (in Britain), and then to a non-denominational secondary, yet I know both the LP and the first verse of the NA.

This is because I live in England. We were taught the NA at primary. We were expected to be fully British citizens, and knowing the NA was part of that. As for the LP, obviously I never even heard of it at primary, and it was touched on in RE in secondary. But it's part of English culture: something you hear so often, at weddings, funerals, commemorative services, in films, read in books, etc, how can you not absorb it?

RitaMills · 07/08/2017 09:09

I know the Lord's Prayer, we had to say it every Friday morning in assembly at school so it's kind of stuck.

I don't know the national anthem though, I'm actually sitting here trying to get the tune it's sung to and all I have in my head is the Sex Pistols shouty 'God save the Queeeeen, she ain't no human beeeeing' Blush

I know Flower of Scotland though.

Elphame · 07/08/2017 09:18

Yes I know my national anthem - Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.

The LP was taught by rote in my primary school - I know my version which doesn't bear a lot of resemblance to the "correct" version. Luckily I don't have to know it - in fact haven't thought of it for decades until this thread.

StarryCorpulentCunt · 07/08/2017 09:39

No Confused I know the odd line if the lords prayer but not in the right order and nowhere near all of it. Why would I know that? I think all religion is archaic bollocks. Don't know the national anthem either. Never had reason to sing it and it's an unbearably dreary song.

BoysofMelody · 07/08/2017 09:46

I know Flower of Scotland though.

After 10 years of living in Scotland I can sing the first line and hum the rest and join in when Ronnie the Corrie shouts 'C'mon'

That said, I think Scotland's real anthem is Daniel Boon's 'Beautiful Sunday' which I know all the words and can do the Slosh too.

cushioncovers · 07/08/2017 10:02

Lord's Prayer. Yes

NA. nope don't know one word of it

DaisysStew · 07/08/2017 10:29

Is the Lord's Prayer the Our Father? I know that one (Catholic school) but I didn't even know what our national anthem was called until I read this thread, let alone know the words.

reuset · 07/08/2017 10:33

Yes, it's the Our Father

Bemusedandpuzzled · 07/08/2017 10:37

We said the Lord's Prayer in school. As the child of atheists, the first time it happened I had no clue what was happening and just tried silently moving my mouth to make it look like I was reciting it, when I had no actual clue what was being said. It was only about 3 years after this that I realised it is 'deliver us from evil' not 'deliver us from eagles'.
