AIBU to think the people up the road were going to keep my package?

I'm a new poster here but have been a long time lurker.

I had a package delivered on Thursday, got an email notification to say it had been delivered while I was out and posted through my door. I came home to find the package wasn't there and the driver had signed on my behalf.

I called up the courier to find out where it was to be told that the driver did deliver it as he also made a delivery to the house 2 doors up. Now I live in an lmost identical cul de sac to the one up the road, the last name of the road is different but the beginning is the same as the one l live in.

Anyway after going back and forth with the courier and the online shop, I posted a note through their door up the road to say I know my package has been delivered to you as your name also received a delivery from the same people. Please could you contact me or pop it down the road. So they've had it since Thursday, and got the note from me yesterday. They've just text to say they have it.

AIBU to think that they were going to keep it? Just about to pick it up now, sorry for the long message!

YABU. They were probably waiting for you to collect it. Have you been round??

CommonSenseIsNotAllThatCommon · 06/08/2017 11:08

That's quite a leap. They more than likely were waiting for you to pick it up.

Tasteslikecandy · 06/08/2017 11:08

I've just been round and they also had. A package from July 8th

OP posts:
SeekingSugar · 06/08/2017 11:10

Yes you're probably right. Was the July 8 one intact?

Phosphorus · 06/08/2017 11:10

They were waiting for you to pick it up.

If I accept a delivery for a neighbour, I don't hound them to come and get it.

I assume they are away/busy/unwell, and will be around in due course.

PinkHeart5911 · 06/08/2017 11:11

Have you thought Maybe they were busy with life and couldn't reply to you straight away?

No you assume they are thieves, why?

Go and pick your parcel up and forget about it

MissMalteser · 06/08/2017 11:11

Yes yabu, they probably thought you'd had a card through the door and where waiting on you to collect

Tasteslikecandy · 06/08/2017 11:12

The package from July 8th was an Amazon one, it was opened but they said that's how they had received it. I didn't know any of the items had been delivered there until the second time as the driver was able to confirm that he had delivered it to 2 doors down from them also on that Thursday.

Our cul de sacs are a1 minute walk apart.

OP posts:
biffyboom · 06/08/2017 11:12

Well surely they were waiting for you to come pick it up.
You have a useless delivery service if they haven't put a card through your door to say where they left it.

Supermagicsmile · 06/08/2017 11:12

Had they opened the one from July 8tj?

Tasteslikecandy · 06/08/2017 11:14

If I had a card through the door it wouldn't say that it's been delivered upthe road though? I've not had a card on either occasion as both couriers have assumed that they had delivered them correctly. Both packages were from differnt retailers.

OP posts:
SeekingSugar · 06/08/2017 11:15

It arrived open? Ok
I don't understand why the courier cannot just deliver to you?

Tasteslikecandy · 06/08/2017 11:15

Yes the package from July had been opened. I'm not a mind reader I had guessed that the most recent package had been delivered there.

OP posts:
Tasteslikecandy · 06/08/2017 11:17

Our cup de sacs are very similar looking but come up separately on he sat nav, I think both times the couriers have been slack. My usual courier is excellent. I was just surprised that they had one from such a long time ago.

Anyway I have both now, I can't do anything about the couriers which are both big companies.

SpartacusSaiman · 06/08/2017 11:19

Seems weird that someone in a different cul de sac keeps getting your packages.

Tbh no i dont take people their packages. I wait for them to come to me.

I once contacted amazon about a package that had been pushed through my door, that wasnt mine. Amazon couldnt trace it and asked me to open it.

Or the person assumed it was theirs, not checked the name on it and opened it. Or it did come damaged.

The fact that they gave you the one from july when they didnt have to suggests they were going to steal your packages

RoseGoldEagle · 06/08/2017 11:29

If I took delivery of a parcel for a neighbour, I'd expect them to come and get it once they're home. But in this case they didn't take delivery as a favour- it was posted through their door mistakenly, so presumably they realised it was a mistake, and that the true owner wouldn't even necessarily know where it was. So in that situation, I would have taken the parcel round to the correct address.

Tasteslikecandy · 06/08/2017 11:33

The thing is they are a separate cul de sac up the road from mine. Mine has 9 houses on and theirs 8 or 9 as well but we live in a city so it's not hard to find. I just think it was bad luck on my part.

It's not like they were left with a neighbour and a card put through my door. The first one I assumed hadn't been posted but the second one cost more and is a present for my daughters birthday. I'm cross at the delivery man for reading the label properly and seeing that mine is the next one down.

Still a little puzzled as to why the packaged had been opened. Anyway it's all sorted and I asked if they accidentally receive anymore could they let me know and I'll do the same if it happens to me.

OP posts:
Time4Tee · 06/08/2017 11:37

Don't be puzzled. They're selfish package opening gits.

Urubu · 06/08/2017 11:44

How could they know you didn't get a card? Obviously they were waiting for you to collect it...

crazycatgal · 06/08/2017 11:47

They should have taken it round if they knew it had been posted to them by accident as you wouldn't have known where the parcel was.

Around Christmas time a gift that I had ordered was marked as delivered by Hermes but I had no parcel and no note. A couple of days later a woman from the next street knocked on the door with my parcel as it had been delivered to her by mistake. If she hadn't have brought it round I would never have known where it was, I was just lucky that she was an honest person.

Tasteslikecandy · 06/08/2017 11:48

Our addresses are almost identical barring the last part of the name of the cul de sac so they would have known that it was sent in error. Let's say I live at Lloyd Crescent but had a package from Lloyd Close I would know it was posted in error so there would be no card as it wasn't a "left with neighbour" type. Both drivers just posted it to them without looking carefully. I can't help that. They would have known that it wasn't meant for them and that I wouldn't have known.

OP posts:
BoomBoomsCousin · 06/08/2017 11:57

It does sound a bit dodgy since the Amazon package was opened, but if they had intended keeping it, why tell you they had either of them, especially the Amazon package?

They may just not be very neighbourly and be a bit pissed off that they keep accepting packages they think are theirs only to find out they're actually yours (again!). And can't be bothered walking around to you because the courier made a mistake. If you haven't received any packages for them in error, then may be they don't order things much and so are even less inclined to do anything proactive to rectify it?

kath6144 · 06/08/2017 11:58

Urubu, but why would she get a card - from what I understand, the driver seems to have delivered it to an alternative cul de sac eg 8 Holme drive rather than 8 Holme close, so he wouldn't have left Op a card. He thought he delivered it correctly!! As Op says, he didn't read the label!!

Given that the receiver would see the correct address on the label and realise it had gone to them by mistake, I do think they should have delivered it.

We live in a cul de sac off another road. We occasionally get post for our house no but the other road. I wouldn't expect the other people to know that the postman had cocked up and posted their letters through wrong door. I just deliver to correct house.

Tasteslikecandy · 06/08/2017 11:58

I order things that are needed or necessary, sometimes I can't always get to a shop as I work full time

kath6144 · 06/08/2017 11:59

Cross post with Op. but saying same thing. She didnt get a card as driver delivered it incorrectly.
