To think family should have shown concern?

Out for afternoon tea and somehow spilled hot tea on my hand.

I squealed and jumped up. A waitress came over as I was still crying out and took me to a sink where I could put cold water on my hand. I screamed several more times as it hurt.

When I got back my family were all just eating cake and chatting!

I sat down and said "I'm fine."

AIBU or could they have shown some concern? Hmm

Do people really go into shock when they've accidentally splashed tea on themselves?? You must have led a charmed life to have such little resilience Confused

IHopeYourCakeIsShit · 05/08/2017 16:19

pax Grin

IloveBanff · 05/08/2017 16:22

pinkblink "Op hasn't come back.... maybe dropped a biscuit on her toe"

Yes, and when she's stopped screaming and recovered from the shock, she'll think "Oh well, at least I can now legitimately park in the disabled spaces"

TyrionLannisterforKing · 05/08/2017 16:22

Have you ever heard the story about the boy who cried wolf?

Two weeks ago, a collegue was involved in an accident involving HCl. She exclaimed that it had poured over her hand, drawing the attention of the professor. The professor then helped. She was fine. Remarked it burned.

BlurryFace · 05/08/2017 16:28

The instinctive cry and jumping up is normal, but the rest of this drama is only really understandable if your skin was peeling off which is what would have happened if it had actually been scalding hot. I mean really, OP, have you not spilt tea on yourself or cut yourself with a knife or got a bad bruise before?

IHopeYourCakeIsShit · 05/08/2017 16:33

I'll have a brave sticker if there are any going?
I sliced my thumb whilst trying to cut a sourdough loaf, it's on the bendy bit so keeps bleeding profusely.
I didn't squeal although I did say fuck quite loudly.

mogulfield · 05/08/2017 16:43

tofutti you were in shock? The serious medical condition, relating to loss of blood that can lead to potentially deadly loss of oxygen.

Aducknotallama · 05/08/2017 16:46

YABU and sound over dramatic to me

Tofutti · 05/08/2017 16:47

Of course I put my hands under cold water! But both hands had been drenched and they were red/swelling.

Colleagues insisted on A&E. I expected A&E to send me home too.

It was a shock. I never thought I'd react like that. Someone else spilt the tea on me, it was a full mug.

Salmotrutta · 05/08/2017 16:48

I've been burned by steam, the iron, the oven etc.

I don't scream and squeal though - I usually hiss "Fuckingfuckingbastardwanker" whilst running my arm/hand under cold water - all by myself.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/08/2017 16:48

I burnt my hand on the grill while my fil was in the kitchen with me. It fucking hurt, it went septic and I had a scar which took about a year to completely go. He didn't even notice it had happened. I made less fuss when I fell down the stairs and hit my back badly when carrying dd as a baby in my arms. I now have scar tissue as in the muscle fibres were damaged and didn't mend correctly.

I also don't know how people can have had such a charmed life that a bit of hot water sends them into shock. All I can think is they suffer from extreme anxiety already.

How many brave stickers can I have btw?

mogulfield · 05/08/2017 16:53

tofutti that does sound bad and I'm not trying to be unsympathetic but you were not IN shock, you were a bit shocked. One is a medical term and serious condition, the other is not.
It annoys me when people say 'so and so was in shock' when they mean they were anxious/panicked/stressed/dazed... it's the same as when people say someone has had a 'nervous breakdown' but that's a thread for another day.

Loveache · 05/08/2017 16:54

Yesterday the handle broke off my hot cup of coffee and it smashed on the floor. Splashed my foot a good bit. I swore loudly and then got down and cleaned it up. I was very brave. I think I deserve a sticker too.

Questioningeverything · 05/08/2017 16:58

I thought this was a reverse, I can imagine op sitting there rolling her eyes at her family whilst the idiot makes such a fuss. I think ops not come back cause they're satisfied everyone thinks the same as them

MerchantofVenice · 05/08/2017 17:02

Lots of showing off on this thread about how stoic people are... Yawn.

I think this is one of those threads where the first one or two posters are quite rude and everyone thinks 'ooh, goody, it's ok to be dreadful to OP because everyone's doing it' and in you all pile. Yuck.

Maybe she was being a drama queen, maybe her family are all dead inside - who knows? One thing's for sure, though: there are some nasty blighters on this thread.

Hellagoodhair · 05/08/2017 17:09

Rambling in to ask has advice not changed to treating burns with warm water rather than cold?
Wink

Billben · 05/08/2017 17:16

I would have been embarrassed if somebody who was with me behaved like you did and wouldn't have given you much attention either. Seems like you are craving it.

Coconutspongexo · 05/08/2017 17:21

A shock and being in shock are very medically different

Tofutti · 05/08/2017 17:21

Mogulfield, I can understand that, but A&E also said my reaction was due to shock.

My first and hopefully only time in A&E.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/08/2017 17:22

t's on the bendy bit

Worst possible place to cut your thumb. I hope that
a) you are lying down
and
b) you are dictating your posts to a secretary - take no risk of accidental thumb activity

MadMags · 05/08/2017 17:23

Merchant, no it really was a ridiculous overreaction.

Nothing to do with mob mentality.

Babyblues14 · 05/08/2017 17:25

I recently got hit full force in the face with extremely hot oil after the spring rolls we were deep frying decided to explode. Caught me in the eye too.
I remember screaming when it first hit me but I don't recall screaming and carrying on after that.
Was a bit miffed at the splash burn marks on my face afterwards though, looked like I was covered in spots Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/08/2017 17:25

I usually hiss "Fuckingfuckingbastardwanker" whilst running my arm/hand under cold water - all by myself

My personal swear is "Shitfuckpigdamnwank" Salmotrutta. It does evermore good than the cold water.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 05/08/2017 17:26

YANBU if it was me I'd be concerned about your general mental state and be sure never to take you out in public ever again

I'd imagine they were embarrassed by your nonsense tbh

TyneTeas · 05/08/2017 17:29

No, not warm water

Cool or lukewarm water, but not ice cold water
