To think family should have shown concern?

Out for afternoon tea and somehow spilled hot tea on my hand.

I squealed and jumped up. A waitress came over as I was still crying out and took me to a sink where I could put cold water on my hand. I screamed several more times as it hurt.

When I got back my family were all just eating cake and chatting!

I sat down and said "I'm fine."

AIBU or could they have shown some concern? Hmm

I'm just place marking for the dripfeed / reverse / reveal that it's written from the perspective of a child.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 05/08/2017 13:14

Bless you OP, you clearly are a 'fuss' type. Hard to unlearn wanting attention, but do try.

If they are used to you making a song and dance about nothing, then they probably assume it's nothing when you start. (And yes, most adults might shout out at the time, but then act like a grown up when having their hand put under cold water - which kind of suggests you've missed the "this is not how anyone over the age of 8 behaves" lesson.)

BoysaDearyMe · 05/08/2017 13:15

We're the screams for attention?

BMW6 · 05/08/2017 13:26

Be honest OP - do you have form for histrionics?
Anyone would exclaim at the initial scalding, but to scream (and more than once FGS) while your hand was being held under the cold tap is puerile and embarrassing. Get a grip woman!

supersop60 · 05/08/2017 13:26

I'm sure it really hurt, and the waitress did the right thing by putting it under cold water.
YABU for the continued screaming.
Your family IBU for not even the slightest "OK now?" - or perhaps they did, but you were expecting more??????

Coconutspongexo · 05/08/2017 13:28

I would have ignored you, I'd have felt embarrassed.

Do you want a brave sticker?

TidyDancer · 05/08/2017 13:30

You can definitely understand an initial reaction but most people are a bit more grown up after that.

Screaming several times and then being passive aggressive when you don't get the attention you want from your family is not normal behaviour OP.

PoppyPopcorn · 05/08/2017 13:33

Gosh you sound like my kids OP, everything is a drama. Screaming as you run your hand under hot water? Seriously?

No mention of having to seek medical attention for this burn so obviously minor. Family probably mortified by OP's screaming and shrieking.

melj1213 · 05/08/2017 15:14

YABVU, not even my 9 year old makes such a fuss about getting injured!

Crying out and jumping up when it first happens is a natural and automatic reaction to the shock of spilling hot tea on yourself ... but rather than crying out and waiting for a waitress to come and take you to the sink, why didn't you take yourself straight to the bathroom to run it under cold water immediately? If I ever get burned, once the initial moment of shock has worn off, I often find I am already making my way to the kitchen/bathroom to run cold water, almost on autopilot.

If you're then crying and screaming while your hand is being run under water you've gone from a natural and automatic reaction to unnecessary histrionics and a reaction purely for attention, which your family chose to ignore so as not to encourage your behaviour

karalime · 05/08/2017 15:29

A few weeks ago I spilt boiling oil on my arm and I ended up in A&E with a 2nd degree burn. I now have a permanent scar on my arm.

At no point did I scream. I did swear once or twice but you sound very melodramatic.

HolgerDanske · 05/08/2017 15:34

I'm not talking about the scream, it's natural to react that way when you're scalded. But what on earth were you expecting people to do? Run around flapping like maniacs just so you could feel suitably assured of their concern? Of course they were sitting and chatting, you said yourself that you were fine!

Honestly it just sounds like you're some kind of attention-seeking drama queen.

BlondeB83 · 05/08/2017 15:37

It sounds like your reaction was way over the top but they could have showed some concern I suppose.

paxillin · 05/08/2017 15:40

OP could also have come back to the table apologising for the histrionics.

Tofutti · 05/08/2017 15:46

I did this with tea at work and was stoic for 5 minutes before the shock got to me and I started crying silent tears. Colleagues took over and administered cold water and first aid.

I was told it was shock. Went to A&E and they saw me instantly and they kept my hands under a cold tap for an hour.

I expect it was the shock for you too.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 05/08/2017 15:48

Were you expecting a 'brave girl star? Hmm

JustMumNowNotMe · 05/08/2017 15:48

I would have flat out ignored you too OP, i have zero tolerance of histrionics.

In fact, if you really screamed several times I probably wouldn't have been at the table when you got back......

Littlechocola · 05/08/2017 15:51

Why are people being so rude?

pinkblink · 05/08/2017 15:52

Op hasn't come back.... maybe dropped a biscuit on her toe

IloveBanff · 05/08/2017 16:00

Tofutti you should have had the sense to put it under cold water yourself.

Coconutspongexo · 05/08/2017 16:05

Tofutti a&e really? Wonder how much that cost the NHS

IloveBanff · 05/08/2017 16:09

What would you have done if you'd been at home alone Tofutti? Called an ambulance or put it under cold water? Confused

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 05/08/2017 16:12

None of my family would have ignored you after a performance like that OP, you would have wished they would though, my family would never let you forget such a ridiculous performance and would tease you horribly for years. Screaming several times over a bit of hot tea is ridiculous, ok a little squeal of shock as it happened can be forgiven but whilst running cold water over it? unless you are 3 that's just pathetic.

MadMags · 05/08/2017 16:13

Tofutti that's ridiculous!

A few minutes under the cold tap would have been grand.

ConstanceCraving · 05/08/2017 16:15

Sounds painful OP but I'm going to take a wild guess here and say that I bet your family are used to your dramatic ways?
