Wedding First Dance

Getting married to DP next July.

I feel doing a choreographed YMCA, Macarena or ShaddapaYaFace would be spectacular. He disagrees.

We have discussed the possibility of omitting it entirely, but are still looking for common ground.

AIBU or is he BU? Any alternative suggestions?

Oh it's an just an inexpensive bit of fun to amuse your loved ones!
Who's to say it's any better or worse than the love shuffle.
Both are either hilarious or awful but really not harming anyone.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/08/2017 19:50

Went to a wedding recently where the couple did this.

It was as cringey as hell.

Charlesroi · 04/08/2017 19:56

Waterloo - in a 'Muriel's wedding' stylee
Tiger Feet (Mud) - reckon you could give that some welly

I like the Time Warp suggestion best Grin

PS don't forget to insult anyone who won't join in

TheCatOfAthenry · 04/08/2017 20:04

To all those complaining of cheese and tack, that's kind of what I'm going for. And with every pirouette and bigfishlittlefishcardboardbox, I will cringe in solidarity with my guests.

It will be tasteful, insofar as cheese is a taste.

There's a version of Uptown Funk based on Lord Voldemort that could do nicely.

Ooh, that sounds like a plan Smile

Eminybob · 04/08/2017 20:33

I think you should do a choreographed break dance to Its Like That by Run DMC.
You need to start by ripping your skirt off to reveal a pair of hot pants.

Violetcharlotte · 04/08/2017 20:41

Tacky. Sorry.

TheCatOfAthenry · 04/08/2017 20:44

@Violetcharlotte it's actually going to be extremely classy. I might even wear a monocle.

I'm going to a wedding next week (as a guest) with a choreographed 1st dance.

I know it's not going to end well, it really isn't. Groom is a 6ft 8 22stone rugby player with all the grace of a hippo on speed!

Mrscropley · 04/08/2017 20:47

Me and exh did the hoki koki with the dc for our first dance!!

elQuintoConyo · 04/08/2017 20:55

Hammer Time?

Cotton Eye Joe?

Saturday Night?

alittlequinnie · 04/08/2017 21:05

I'm a bit scared to admit this..... my husband and I did a "choreographed " dance at our wedding. I am so self consious I didn't want to just shuffle around while everyone filmed us.

We danced to Buddy Holly True Love Ways - we danced a very very slow rumba that was adapted to fit the tune.

I really hope now that it wasn't "cringe" like everybody says on here - it was just a bit more polished I think.

The tune really meant something to us and is v.short.

Were all my guests cringing at us? I feel really deflated

(10 years ago if this helps)

TheCatOfAthenry · 04/08/2017 22:20

@alittlequinnie I have no objections to others choreographing their dances.

I would like a little cheese in mine, but I hope that will come from YMCA and the already famous dance.

The obvious choice is the I've had the time of my life dance from Dirty Dancing including the lift!

Nobody puts OP in a corner!

winobaglady · 04/08/2017 23:00

Why not learn a 'proper' dance like a waltz or foxtrot? I think that would be pretty cool.

goldopals · 04/08/2017 23:02

Is the Nutbush dance popular over there? Or, is it an Aussie thing?

OverTheHammer · 04/08/2017 23:04

We had Lemmy's version of "stand by me". The old folk were rather confused.

greendale17 · 04/08/2017 23:07

YABU- cringed, cheesy and tacky

JWrecks · 04/08/2017 23:11

Take the piss all you want, but I love a choreographed or unexpected dance like that! I'm an unabashed nerd and think it's great fun!

Is there nothing silly or outlandish that he would agree to at all? Maybe ask him if there is ANYTHING like that he would be willing to do?

If not, I REALLY like winobaglady's idea of learning a proper dance and really impressing everyone with that!! A sexy tango sounds brilliant, if you've got the time to learn/practise!! Do you think that would be possible?

brittabot · 04/08/2017 23:51

That Thriller video was all about the groom though, you barely saw the bride!

I hate being the centre of attention and barely coped with a standard shuffle to our favourite song, but if you want to do it you should do it. Though you might find on the day you'd rather hang out with friends and family than be bothered by about learning a dance!

LeMesmer · 05/08/2017 00:12

When I got married 32 years a very long time ago this first dance thing was unheard of, unless perhaps you were very posh. The DJ played Bryan Ferry 'Let's stick together' , quite apt really . I had no idea where DH was, just grapped some random mate of his to dance. It doesn't really matter that much years later. But if it really is important to you try and reach a compromise, there will be one somewhere.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 05/08/2017 00:18

The Mi-nute Waltz or even the theme tune of "Just a Minute" Wink

WiganPierre · 05/08/2017 00:24

CRRRRIIINNGGEE.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 05/08/2017 00:37

CRRRRIIINNGGEE.

I'm confused now.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 05/08/2017 01:06

Some friends of mine had a handful of basic ballroom dancing lessons so that they could actually move around the floor to their first dance. She was a musician and her friends who were a string quartet had offered to play for the first dance, so they waltzed. It was lovely.

Anything other than that sort of thing I'd be away to the bar to avoid having to watch.
