AIBU?
To think they way some British people are abroad gives us a bad name
LittleAnnie1971 · 02/08/2017 16:01
Just returned from holiday, we stayed in a hotel in a popular resort area. We usually go for something else but I didn't have dh with me this year as he couldn't take the time off so I had to go somewhere simple which didn't need driving.
- 95% of restaurants were British Food
2. Everyone was British
3. Felt like a British town with hot weather
I can't understand why on earth you would bother going somewhere so similar to home. I know weather in uk is poor but who really likes going on holiday somewhere so similar to home.
Not only was this place a British enclave, but it was full of brits complaining about signs being in Spanish (in Spain). The British were the most drunk. The most overweight and greedy when it came to buffet.
I can see the reason why people with children prefer something with familiar food because they can be fussy.
Aibu to think this is a bad trait we have
Youcanttaketheskyfromme · 02/08/2017 16:03
Many brits are just vile. I don't know if other countries are the same but yes brits abroad often give us all a bad name.
I've noticed and had smaller things pointed out to my by friends from other countries/cultures.
I've chosen a holiday destination and hotel this year specifically to avoid other brits/those kinds of brits.

Lots of people, obviously.
I'd much prefer England if it had better weather.
Holidays aren't always about doing new things or experiencing new foods or cultures. Sometimes they are just a break from the daily drudge. Sometimes they are just to recharge the batteries worn down at work or home.
As long as they aren't bothering you, what does it matter?
MrsTerryPratchett · 02/08/2017 16:09
As long as they aren't bothering you, what does it matter? Us, and the Americans, have managed to change a lot of places for the worse. So it does affect people. Locals mainly.
Although I go to places with as few Westerners as possible and that's a different kind of terrible because those places become tourist destinations. Then they get ruined too.
MizK · 02/08/2017 16:12
Uuuurgh there are horrid boorish people from every culture. I avoid places like Benidorm because I imagine it to be full of British themed bars etc, but the thought of other people enjoying them doesn't upset me. Resorts cater to specific tastes and obviously lots of people want a nice beach and hot sunshine and would be too intimidated to enjoy a holiday where everything was completely unfamiliar. And this certainly doesn't just apply to Brits abroad. You sound like you begrudge people having a good time unless it's your idea of tasteful and classy.
exLtEveDallas · 02/08/2017 16:12
Oh and I'm on hols at the moment and can honestly say the fellow Brits here are lovely. Much more so than a lot of other guests: they are polite, they say please and thank you, they tip the staff, they queue, they join in games, they aren't shouting or drinking vodka at 10am, they haven't stolen things from the poolside and they don't break the rules making things uncomfortable or dangerous for others.
LittleAnnie1971 · 02/08/2017 16:13
yes but you are flying somewhere which is hurting environment and costing you money why would you want to go somewhere so similar. Why not open your mind and experience difference, since the trip is costing you and the planet it should be at least made worthwhile

Sorry op but why not up your budget next time? Or do a bit of research before you book?
You've got a nerve complaining at all
People are making huge generalisations on this thread too!
It is fine if Brits want to go abroad and not immerse themselves in a different culture!
And what if they go for a change of temperature?
ZaraW · 02/08/2017 16:20
I think you haven't done much travelling if you think the British are bad. Lots of cultures are loud especially Middle Eastern and African. Chinese and Russian tourists have a reputation of being extremely rude and having bad manners. Americans can be loud and obnoxious. It's certainly not just the British.
ohhereweareagain · 02/08/2017 16:20
Middle class bashing threads and now British bashing. Depends where you have gone on holiday as certain destinations are more likely to attract certain types who are more likely to behave in a specific way. I have found some Italian destinations completely free of Brits who behave like this thank you very much although I won't say where as I want to.keep it like that
Edsheeranalbumparty · 02/08/2017 16:21
I think many Brits just want everything to be British, just with good weather. No interest in local food, culture or language. What's the fucking point? Shameful.
They want sun. Have you seen the weather here today? It's so depressing!
Some people just aren't that interested in food, language or culture. They just want a break away from the daily grind. As long as they are not being offensive/loud/annoying then what is wrong with that?
I have been on lots of holidays where there aren't many Brits and it's all been very cultural and mind expanding. This year we are going to a Spanish resort where there is a British pub at the end of the road. I can't wait!
implantsandaDyson · 02/08/2017 16:23
But you also took a flight somewhere that cost you money and the environment knowing it's not usually what you would do or somewhere you would usually go and did you enjoy it - doesn't sound like it. It's a bit rich asking other people to "open their mind" and do something different when you've started a thread with sweeping generalisations.
Yes there are pains in the arse everywhere, magnified probably by being able to understand the complaints and being more in tune with the accents etc because you can understand what they're saying. But I'm not sure I find sanctimony a better trait.
MargaretTwatyer · 02/08/2017 16:23
yes but you are flying somewhere which is hurting environment and costing you money why would you want to go somewhere so similar
Well you went there, you tell us?
They are not my cup of tea, but in summary: guaranteed good weather, pools, better weather, someone else cooks for you, better weather, seeing different faces to normal, better weather, different landscape, better weather, maid services, better weather, beaches with warm water, better weather.
Did I mention the better weather?
Didn't it all used to be lovely when the Costas were for the middle classes and the oiks had to settle for Cleethorpes?
The answer is OP you need to spend more money and go to Italy.
SenecaFalls · 02/08/2017 16:24
Us, and the Americans, have managed to change a lot of places for the worse.
Perhaps, but at least we Americans, for the most part, aren't doing it in other countries. We don't have to leave the US to find warm weather for one thing.
For what it's worth, I live in a part of the US that gets lots of British visitors. They are generally lovely and the only real accommodation that we have to make for them is the provision of electric kettles.
MaidOfStars · 02/08/2017 16:24
Jesus, OP, the snobbery is amazing.
We usually go for something else
Aye right. I mean, I believe you, but to the others tourists in your popular beach resort, you're just the same as they are - a Brit abroad in a place where 95% of the restaurants are British, everyone else is British and it's just like Britain but hot.
How the fuck do you know what the other people have spent their last holiday doing? I take holidays of various types, according to my need at the time. And will even do different types of things on the same holiday.
Sometimes it's exploring rainforests in Malaysia, sometimes it's getting pissed in an Irish bar in Tenerife.
