Just returned from holiday, we stayed in a hotel in a popular resort area. We usually go for something else but I didn't have dh with me this year as he couldn't take the time off so I had to go somewhere simple which didn't need driving.

  1. 95% of restaurants were British Food
  2. Everyone was British
  3. Felt like a British town with hot weather

I can't understand why on earth you would bother going somewhere so similar to home. I know weather in uk is poor but who really likes going on holiday somewhere so similar to home.

Not only was this place a British enclave, but it was full of brits complaining about signs being in Spanish (in Spain). The British were the most drunk. The most overweight and greedy when it came to buffet.

I can see the reason why people with children prefer something with familiar food because they can be fussy.

Aibu to think this is a bad trait we have

Loads of resorts would have fit your criteria, you picked badly.

Having worked overseas in many tourist destinations Brits are also the first reserve to sunbeds and complain about anything. It's always odd how Brits get sick and claim compo from food in hotels yet the 150 Dutch or French guests eating the same buffet didn't. Some British tourists are vile, clicking their fingers at Cabin Crew, swearing at hotel receptionists because their bed is too hard etc.

Anecdotal evidence.

You get knobs of any nationality. A 50 something Spanish woman at the airport literally walked through my 11 year old yesterday, no apology or even acknowledgement she was there.

Latin America 5 years ago, No-one came anywhere even close to being as big a bunch of rude, aggressive bell-ends as the Israelis. And they were everywhere.
Snobby I know, but I just don't go AI on principle.

I agree that being a nob transcends nationality.

Perhaps Nob should become a nationality in its own right.

I've observed in Crete, Cyprus and Majorca in recent years that there are clearly resorts that market specific nationalities. The locals aren't dummies - they just
stick up signs saying Biergarten and flog more sausage in the German focussed resorts and flog all day breakfast in the Brit focussed resorts.

I seek weather that will be reliably clement for 2 weeks, in a well-appointed hotel that understands the concept of courteous service, the power shower and has cracked the recipe for ice. This is not consistent with holidaying in the UK. I assume that other British people will be drawn by similar, and if they want to drink mimosas with their breakfast good bloody luck to them.

Iwas chatting to a lady who used to be a rep - her observation was that some people just go on holiday to complain.
I can believe that too.
I think that with the internet now, trip adviser and more people holidaying abroad, its easier to avoid places that are not right for you.
Also, some hoteliers and apartment owners are not always the best at dealing with genuine worries or concerns, its not always the holiday maker in the wrong. It has to be give and take. I can see both sides really.
This is a derail from the original thread, but if you want England with sun , then good for you. as long as your not ruining anyone else's holiday and are polite, then go for it!

So why did you do it then?

The worst customers ever (I witnessed on a work trip to check out a new hotel, I work for a British holiday firm), are the Russians. I have never seen a plague of locusts but the Russians in an all inc hotel at a buffet must come pretty close.
