To think they way some British people are abroad gives us a bad name

Just returned from holiday, we stayed in a hotel in a popular resort area. We usually go for something else but I didn't have dh with me this year as he couldn't take the time off so I had to go somewhere simple which didn't need driving.

  1. 95% of restaurants were British Food
  2. Everyone was British
  3. Felt like a British town with hot weather

I can't understand why on earth you would bother going somewhere so similar to home. I know weather in uk is poor but who really likes going on holiday somewhere so similar to home.

Not only was this place a British enclave, but it was full of brits complaining about signs being in Spanish (in Spain). The British were the most drunk. The most overweight and greedy when it came to buffet.

I can see the reason why people with children prefer something with familiar food because they can be fussy.

Aibu to think this is a bad trait we have

I went on holiday a couple of years ago and the place was over run with Russians, if you think the Brits are bad....Jesus!!

TheNightmanCometh · 02/08/2017 16:31

I have some family members who are a)Irish and b)twats on holiday. I've often thought before now, I bet the locals assumed they were English.

PoppyPopcorn · 02/08/2017 16:32

Some people are absolutely hideous, whatever nationality they are. The sort of people the OP mention are not people i would socialise with at home, and wouldn't want to be on holiday with.

This is why you DO YOUR HOMEWORK about your holiday destination and avoid anywhere like Benidorm or similar resorts which are wall to wall British pubs and fry up breakfasts.

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 02/08/2017 16:33

Don't forget coming home and claiming thousands in compensation for questionable food poisoning claims. And although NABALT, other nationalities really don't do that.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 02/08/2017 16:34

Different companies and resorts advertise in different countries. The restaurants staff etc then have to have that particular language as a second lanuage. So you might get one set of hotels/town in Spain which caters for Brits so it feels like Spain is full of loud Brits. A few miles down the road, you'll get a town/resort which advertises itself on German websites or in German travel buros, so it feels like Spain is full of boorish Germans. Or Russians. Or French. Tourists from your own nation are a source of embarrassment the world over. People just act differently on holiday.

hollyisalovelyname · 02/08/2017 16:35

It's not just the British.
Sometimes you'd be ashamed to be Irish.
I hate 'the drunken Irish' label the Irish get.
I presume every nationality has people who let their nation down, sadly.

Davros · 02/08/2017 16:35

Living in London I see many people from other countries behaving quite badly. Loud, rude, don't know how to behave in public really. And it's amazing how many go to restaurants serving food from their own country, e.g. Italians in carluccios - really!! We see that a lot.

LittleAnnie1971 · 02/08/2017 16:36

I usually go to Italy and it wasn't money it was because I can't drive so need a resort

MaidOfStars · 02/08/2017 16:37

Italians in carluccios
I don't have a problem with Italians eating Italian food but I'd be amazed if they thought Carluccio's was going to be an authentic taste of home...

Davros · 02/08/2017 16:38

Exactly!

implantsandaDyson · 02/08/2017 16:39

So it suited you to go to this resort for your own convenience but you can't see how it would suit other people to go to a resort which suited them Hmm

MaidOfStars · 02/08/2017 16:39

I usually go to Italy and it wasn't money it was because I can't drive so need a resort
Special pleading.

Ledkr · 02/08/2017 16:40

We've been in Spain and France since the 18th and it's been lovely.
Today though it's generally louder, busier and full of badly behaved kids and entitled sunbed reservers!
I also noticed a huge increase in Brits, which may just be a coincidence but I don't normally buy into the belief that Brits are badly behaved!

LittleAnnie1971 · 02/08/2017 16:40

No I can see convienience but not why it has to be all British

strawberrygate · 02/08/2017 16:40

little annie maybe lots of the other people "needed a resort" really making me laugh that you're slagging off people who are choosing the same holiday place as you did yourself!

personally, I'm very fucking insulted about you slating British people. Would you say the same about other nationalities? shall we slag off all the foreign tourists / workers in Britain, or is that different?

LittleAnnie1971 · 02/08/2017 16:41

Oh and it was not a cheap hotel so this has nothing to do with class btw

OP posts:
waitforitfdear · 02/08/2017 16:42

You sound great company op Hmm

CatThiefKeith · 02/08/2017 16:43

Next time try a Spanish resort like Gandia OP.

Fernanie · 02/08/2017 16:44

OP - I also strongly dislike those sorts of resorts and find the behaviour of some British people there a bit embarrassing. But those places are set up to attract tourists who are looking for exactly what PPs have described - British food and British people but better weather - and they're doing well off of it. If that's not what you're looking for, go somewhere else.
There are plenty of holiday options where you don't have to drive. What about a week in a little cabin by a lake (in a sunny country if you want sun)? Get a taxi there from the airport - stop at a grocery store en route if you need to - then stay put for the week swimming, canoeing, hiking etc. Or a city break where you can rely on public transport? There are lots of lovely European cities that aren't expensive to visit and also are "off the beaten track" enough that they're not overrun with tourists. Or one of those train tours where you just have to get yourself to the first train station and then you go on a scenic train ride for a week and stop off at interesting places en route for a day or two?

DaemonPantalaemon · 02/08/2017 16:45

Lots of cultures are loud especially Middle Eastern and African

Generalising much, ZaraW? Africa has more than 52 countries, why paint a whole continent as "loud"? Have you been to every single African country then or encountered people from each one? And have you encountered every Middle Eastern nationality?

If in doubt, please note that Africa is a continent, not a country, and there is no culture that is called "African".

MTB133 · 02/08/2017 16:46

Some people just like a break from the grind. They don't particularly care where it is as long as the sun is out and the beers are plentiful. I agree though, behaviour can be annoying at times, particularly the selfish sunbed behaviour which Brits are worse than anyone at in my opinion.

OmniwhoreDun · 02/08/2017 16:46

I have friends working in Greece at the moment they adore the Brits as they get drunk but are polite, noisy and fun (their words) they DREAD Russian tourists. Some of the stories they've told me have been shocking.

GahBuggerit · 02/08/2017 16:48

Actual LOL at op moaning about British people being in a resort she went to Grin

SealSong · 02/08/2017 16:49

YANBU

Brits abroad can be hideous, arrogant and embarrassing. But that's only a small proportion of holidaying Brits I am sure.

But perhaps every nation says that about a portion of their holidaying population, who knows.
