Just returned from holiday, we stayed in a hotel in a popular resort area. We usually go for something else but I didn't have dh with me this year as he couldn't take the time off so I had to go somewhere simple which didn't need driving.

  1. 95% of restaurants were British Food
  2. Everyone was British
  3. Felt like a British town with hot weather

I can't understand why on earth you would bother going somewhere so similar to home. I know weather in uk is poor but who really likes going on holiday somewhere so similar to home.

Not only was this place a British enclave, but it was full of brits complaining about signs being in Spanish (in Spain). The British were the most drunk. The most overweight and greedy when it came to buffet.

I can see the reason why people with children prefer something with familiar food because they can be fussy.

Aibu to think this is a bad trait we have

way too much generalisation OP - there are boorish loud people of every race, creed or class (or even age) so enough with the bashing of the British
Just avoid where you know this sort of person (in your opinion) will be enjoying themselves loudly and you will be fine Hmm.

ZaraW · 02/08/2017 16:54

Daemon yes I've travelled and worked extensively in the ME and Africa my ex was Lebanese. I've done a lot of socialising especially in the ME. Families are large and people often have to be quite loud to be heard. Thanks I do realise Africa is a continent.

GahBuggerit · 02/08/2017 16:55

Id rather be in a resort filled with Brits absolutely smashed out of their heads over (most) Germans or Turkish people ANY DAY of the week.

Terrible experiences of both. It was actually a loud rowdy knobhead Brit who rescued me from a Turkish group of men who couldnt understand why dragging me down the street to go back to their apartment wasnt my idea of fun Hmm

Aeroflotgirl · 02/08/2017 16:57

Yes Yes Yes its embarrassing and disgusting. You can only see a Friday or Saturday night in a busy town, to know what can go on abroad. Shagaluf, Marbs etc. We are not all like that, but it does tar us with the same brush. Of course tabloids like the DM or Sun report this behaviour, and way hay all brits are like this.

MsHarry · 02/08/2017 16:58

Depends where you go abroad.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 02/08/2017 17:00

We're in Lanzarote in an adults only hotel.

Mixed nationalities here but as Brits we've all been thoroughly fantastic and not loud at all, not in the slightest.

Mulledwine1 · 02/08/2017 17:00

It's very true. I don't like British expats at all.

But I'm not generally that keen on other people overseas either.

I think people (generally) behave better in their own countries.

Cailleach666 · 02/08/2017 17:01

I think it's English people abroad that give us a bad name rather than British people.

MsHarry · 02/08/2017 17:02

Some people lack confidence abroad with the language and food etc so purposefully choose this type of resort as it makes them comfortable.

leccybill · 02/08/2017 17:05

I'm in a Greek mostly British 5* resort. It's like mumsnet on holiday- everybody is terribly polite and complimentary to the staff. Children are playing nicely and quietly. It's lovely.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 02/08/2017 17:09

Yy to those who said bad apples from every country. Egypt the Russians have a bad name, in Cuba it was the loud boorish Canadians. (I know!), 20 years ago in Spain it was the Germans. You just get rude people wherever.

SarahJonesS · 02/08/2017 17:12

We went to Cyprus a few years ago. The management were unbelievably nice to us. They admitted on the last night that they were so pleased to have British guests as their clientele was mostly Russian and they thought they were rude and demanding.

I like sight seeing and experiencing local cultures etc however I also enjoy sitting on my arse, not having to cook and clean, and a with a toddler who is incapable of sitting in a restaurant for longer than 30 minutes without fussing an all inclusive buffet is currently my dream holiday and with our low budget it will be at a resort which advertises with British tour operators so I'm expecting a lot of British guests.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/08/2017 17:15

We are in Sicily just now, in a resort because we don't want to drive. There are several Brits where we are staying, but they are well behaved and are here because the like or love Italy, Italian food, Italian wine and Italian culture.

I am struggling to understand why you couldn't find a resort that wasn't "Brits abroad" as there are loads.

Our holiday is even a Thomsons package, yet it doesn't feel like it at all.

There are no nightclubs or karaoke bars, just really good and inexpensive restaurants selling great food and wine.

Trip Advisor is your friend. So YABU because you should have done some more research.

PoppyPopcorn · 02/08/2017 17:15

I think it's English people abroad that give us a bad name rather than British people

Rubbish. Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish people can be JUST as awful. It's just that there's proportionally more English people around.

OhMrsQ · 02/08/2017 17:18

Honey, are you British? And complaining about the British?

I was once stuck in traffic in London. Complained. My taxi driver said, but you are also the traffic.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/08/2017 17:23

British people are LOUD. It's very noticeable compared to groups of say other Europeans

Try being in a water park in Spain at the same time as a party of Spanish school children, or in the late night bars in Seville and shortly afterwards when they start emptying the bins at 5 am. As a nation, the Spanish can out loud the Brits any day of the week.

There are some resorts in Mallorca where almost everyone who goes there is German. You still get Spanish food, and generally no people complaining about Spanish-ness or you don't understand them if you don't speak German. You get to practice your Spanish and German and can start each Guten Morganing to fellow guests in the hotels and telling people Nein sprecken zie Deutche. And despite the common stereotype, no evidence of sunlounger hogging round the pool that I ever notice.

Try Paguera. It has three lovely beaches and just enough restaurants and bars to enjoy a civilised evening out. With almost no Brits to make you embarassed about your fellow countrymen.

IHateUncleJamie · 02/08/2017 17:25

This thread is hilarious. 😂😂

but who really likes going on holiday somewhere so similar to home

Er - YOU, apparently, OP Grin as you're there, aren't you?

And if you HAD to go there because you can't drive Confused why not go to Venice? Vair nice and cultural.

PollyCazaletWannabe · 02/08/2017 17:25

This reminds me of that amazing 'trip advisor revie' thread a while back. Can't remember why they were called revies now but it was a hilarious thread Grin does anyone else remember? I wonder if it still exists, maybe in classics?

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2017 17:27

People are abroad, on holiday and not necessarily behaving ina way they normally do because they are excited, out and about more, tired and maybe hungover/sunburnt/ a bit tipsy. Even a bit stressed.

Foreign people in London and Edinburgh can seem really loud to our ears.

May I just add , Benidorm may be a bit 'boorish' for some but it has an absolutely beautiful beach.

The80sweregreat · 02/08/2017 17:28

Dh and I went on holiday at easter. the hotel was mostly German and Dutch. the Dutch were lovely, really friendly and funny. As were everyone else.
The Germans tended to stick together, were rude to the staff and used to like pushing in the queues. My dh likes the Germans ( can speak german too) but even he said they seemed rude and these were older people. Luckily we didnt encounter the towels on the sunbed problem as it wasnt that full.
Brits do have a bad reputation on the party islands i think - it is a shame. I do hate it when you see them ( usually in the daily hail) and theres been reports of problems. that does upset me. I think that yobbish behaviour should be outlawed. easier said than done i suppose!

PollyCazaletWannabe · 02/08/2017 17:28

Found this one (although I think there may have been another)

Enjoy! Grin

EnglishGirlApproximately · 02/08/2017 17:30

It's not so much being British, any nationality en masse in another country stand out as loud, boorish etc. I've worked in resorts which have been largely a Dutch or Spanish clientele and there really isn't much difference between that and British resorts - the resort caters to its market.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/08/2017 17:31

I much prefer experiencing something different on holiday, so mixing only with Brits and lying by the pool all the time doesn't appeal at all. But that's my choice just as it's others' choice to enjoy those things, and the net makes research so easy that there'd no reason to end up in a completely unsuitable resort

I only really mind if they disgrace us by behaving like pigs, but that's certainly not just a British thing ... watch (some of) the Russians and cringe Hmm

BarbaraofSeville · 02/08/2017 17:31

Actually, don't fly to Mallorca from the UK. Too many people on the plane are going to Magaluf and start their holiday in the Wetherspoons at the airport at 5 am and continue on the plane.

Being trapped for three hours in close proximity to pissed idiots at 10 am going on Gaz's Stag Do in Magaluf takes some getting over.

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2017 17:32

The Brits are terribly well behaved on foreign campsites. Quite at night and quite in the morning. They obediently obey curfews.

I cannot say the same for any other nationality who tend to paly loud music and talk (the horror!) til late at night.

If you are in Spain in an urbanisation at the weekend or during a fiesta period you will hear all about it all night long from the Spaniards leaving the city for a short break.
