To think they way some British people are abroad gives us a bad name

Just returned from holiday, we stayed in a hotel in a popular resort area. We usually go for something else but I didn't have dh with me this year as he couldn't take the time off so I had to go somewhere simple which didn't need driving.

  1. 95% of restaurants were British Food
  2. Everyone was British
  3. Felt like a British town with hot weather

I can't understand why on earth you would bother going somewhere so similar to home. I know weather in uk is poor but who really likes going on holiday somewhere so similar to home.

Not only was this place a British enclave, but it was full of brits complaining about signs being in Spanish (in Spain). The British were the most drunk. The most overweight and greedy when it came to buffet.

I can see the reason why people with children prefer something with familiar food because they can be fussy.

Aibu to think this is a bad trait we have

I think people from any nationality, when they congregate together, they make a lot of noise...small groups tend to be quieter Smile

But Michael McIntyre does make me laugh Grin

BoysofMelody I get where you're coming from
I work in Edinburgh and at this time of the year find the crowds quite intense and frustrating. Bashing you out of the way with their enormous Woolen Mill bags!

The difficulty is that I think a lot of people subconsciously assume that because they are on holiday, so is everyone else and so they behave less considerately. It usually takes me 10mins to walk from Waverely to work. In tourist season it's 20 because they simply will not get out of the way, milling around, taking pics, sitting in the pavement- especially the big groups of all nationalities. I imagine London to be similar.

We travel to Dublin a lot because OH is from there and I would say that the British tourists on stag and hen dos are the least pleasant. Loads of Americans and Canadians but the Brits are by far the ones you see hammered and being sick all over the street. It's embarrassing.

I entirely see why someone would want to go away simply to relax somewhere warm, but there's no need to demand things to be "just the same as at home" while you're there. We have done a couple of lovely zero-effort holidays in Spain and Italy but certainly didn't expect pints of bitter and English language newspapers

I made the mistake of going to the Clarks shop on Princes Street last summer. Queueing up for a shoe brush a Russian bloke literally barged me out of the way and got the assistant',s attention by waving a big wodge of cash around.

I used to work at a tourist attraction in Edinburgh as a guide during the university hokidays and collectively, wealthy Russian tourists are amongst the rudest, crassest scumbags I've ever had the displeasure of meeting in Edinburgh. Well apart from Italian school groups, where the teachers ignore bad behaviour that should have been nipped in the bud, before the entire group would descend into anarchy and the teachers would start screaming like banshees amongst the chaos. As I say, the English don't have a monopoly on bad behaviour on holiday. Nor are Scots abroad universally well behaved and loved by the local population. Just ask any European town that has had the displeasure of accomodating Rangers fans during their European fixtures.

I live and work in Edinburgh. I love it at this time of year. I've got loads of things booked for the official Festival , some Book Festival events and will book Fringe events once the reviews start coming out.

YANBU, the "little englanders" as I call them are a sight to behold. Before kids DH and I used to avoid popular family resorts and preferred to do more non-commercial European holidays to random little towns, we loved it. Now we go where there kids discos and entertainment are and more than once I've seen British sunburnt people SHOUT TO SPANISH PEOPLE VERY LOUDLY IN ENGLISH as if the language barrier can simply be solved by turning up the volume Hmm I don't know if these kind of people don't realise, or just don't care, how ridiculous they are. Off on another jolly family holiday to a Very British Resort in 2 weeks. Looking forward to sun and playing in the pool. Not looking forward to searching high and low for somewhere that has non-British food on the menu

It all depends where you go. Usual brits resort yes brits are pains. Certainly tho people from Germany can be just as bad. Worst one ever for me were Americans on a short (piss up) break on my dream holiday to the Caribbean, loud leary rude and v v demanding. I love American people and have many friends and family over there. But on that holiday they were possessed.

It can be annoying when I go back home and drunken, entitled tourists are all over the place. Braying loudly. Talking at you loudly and verrrrrry slowly in English. I remember being in town and seeing a British woman in her bikini perched next to a mannequin in store window, chilling out for a bit. I mean if you were in London and wanted to get off your feet for a bit you wouldn't decide to do that in say John Lewis, would you? When in Rome/cultural norms n all that.

I was in Ibiza years ago and got talking to a couple who said they hated that their DCs had to go to and from school and see drunken louts lurching home from the night's rave, pools of vomit, swearing and loud/sexual behaviour etc

& no it isn't all tourists. But those that display that behaviour it does affect locals. Even if they may not tell you.

I love a holiday in Europe, the bars/partying is ok although Im mainly there for the sun - but you'd choose where you go/stay if you don't want to be surrounded by Brits wanting everything to cater for them wouldn't you?

Cherry you don't have to take your children to a "Brits abroad" destination. DD isn't scarred for life because we never took her to such places.

When she was younger we took her to low key resorts in Corfu, Croatia, Crete, Lanzarote and Italy.

Recently back from.Croatia.
It was the people on cruise boat tours and "do Europe in a week" type people who go up our nose.
Some countries love a selfie stick. Hundreds of the fuckers looking at Dubrovnik thru a lens. Pushing, shoving, shouting at all and sundry to get the perfect shot for Insta. (My husband got so angry with them he started photobombing their pictures)
The big American man who remarked loudly to a Croatian woman in an ice cream shop, "What do you mean you don't accept American dollars? What kinda third world country is this?" Angry
The German women in a bar who shouted at the poor barman, "You serve us shit. This isn't good beer. We are German, and have the best beer in the world." (I don't expect to go to Croatia and be served cheddar cheese, so this attitude pisses me off).
The people who reserved places at a table on a pleasure boat tour with their sunglasses. The people who reserved chairs on the same tour with towels. You may go to hell now please. Thank you.
The Croatians have the patience of saints. We saw how poorly they were being spoken to in their own country. A couple were rude to us, but after all we had witnessed, we understood. The rude lady in the bakery was ok with me in the end because I said, "Some English speaking people are assholes" which actually raised a smile. People forget WE are guests in THEIR country, and we should give them respect.

Are you British? If so why did you choose that resort knowing it was full of Brits?

Lonicera I know but they enjoy it so much at the kids discos, kids pools, soft play etc and the variety of activities those kind of resorts have (water parks, safari parks etc) and ask every year for those kind of places. My children are quite superficial and would be bored silly in anything less 😬 I don't mind them really, I wouldn't choose to go there if we didn't have kids but as long as there's sun and a few good restaurants I'm happy. I do miss authentic local cuisine though.

Also I think if you don't do research and end up taking children to party resorts - Magaluf, Malia, Kavos etc - you only have yourself to blame if there's hoards of people being sick on the streets at 7pm in front of you little ones (I've been to all the above in my youth and you'd be surprised at the number of families there)

The best tip I read for avoiding party resorts if you don't know where they are is to get the Club 18-30 brochure and check that where you are planning on going isn't in it.

Happily that is the experience of many who live and work in Edinburgh. It has got such a vibe. Of course people working with big groups of Italian teenagers will have a different experience. To be fair, their behaviour is pretty bad. Grrrr!

On the quieter side but there was a very rowdy street that was chaos at night

Turns out we were in the dutch ibiza

Cherry DD has never been to an AI holuday or a resort with kids entertainment so she has never asked to go somewhere like that. She is now 17 and really dislikes small children so we actively avoid destinations who cater for families with small children.

What a bizarre post. I love being British - yes, EVEN British although I think of myself as Scottish first and foremost. I cannot believe you wrote that when there are so many things to be proud of and grateful for. Wow.

you know the locals see you coming

We are like different types of holiday - like a specific type does not make you superior or a lower class of human being

Agree what a bizarre post. Goodness, I'm a middle class , Europhile, Edinburgher and as big a snob as you could hope to avoid but I agree with nina2b, there is nothing wrong with being British and plenty to like.
