I get stopped every day by other dog walkers.i get rude comments about my parenting because of my choice. I get shocked faces and utter disbelief when asked do I have a pet!
I have a pit bull!
He was not my choice of breed and I didn't even want a bloody dog!
But.... a family member was treating him very badly he was under weight riddled in fleas being hit and attacked by other dogs in the house being given just left over food from whatever takeaway they had that night I observed this for a few months until I was invited to a barbecue five years ago in 30degree heatwave I could hear this dog crying in a room upstairs. I went up to see the dog who was in a boiling room with NO water!
I lost it! And took the dog home that moment to mine !
Iv now had him 6 years he's now a confident gorgeous family pet and we all adore him and he's amazing with my children he sleeps with my 10 year old every night as he hates being alone (naughty I know) and even lives peacefully with two cats!
He's not got a aggressive bone in his stocky body Smile
But nearly every day people stop me and demand I put THAT dog on a lead ( in a huge field) or how could you own such a monster!. Or omg how could you allow such a dog around your children!
I'm so sick of this it makes me so upset Because he's so lovely he's and been given a second chance to be a happy pouch.
I feel like I have to explain his story constantly AIBU to think that people should just mind their own bloody business or do some research on the breed!

OP, you've tried to keep him out of her bed? Oh well, as long as you've tried. That's alright then.

TakesTheCake · 31/07/2017 20:57

enthusiasm you don't understand. Not all dogs can become aggressive. Not this one. Not OP's one. This one is different from any other dog and it could 100% cast-iron never happen.

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 20:58

I'm so upset that I asked a family friend who's a single man if he would take my dog as I can't stand the horrible comments of people in public anymore even he said he would as he knows him well and loves him but advised me against it as it would break my dd heart and my dogs :( feel at a complete loss I shouldn't care but I do

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 31/07/2017 20:59

Oh silly me

I shouldn't bother with the news obviously it's been sensationalised

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 20:59

Never once said I know best just said I know my dog

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 21:02

bilbobaggi I can't help it I never knew there was so much hatred for my dog it's so upsetting especially when people say I'm a bad parent for trusting him it's not nice I'm considering giving him to a man who I know will handle the insults better than me just don't want more upset for my dog and to be moved on again but it's too much my dd will never forgive me so that's bothering me too

Blanketdog · 31/07/2017 21:03

My whippet has been attacked by two dogs - both Staffies and has also been threatened by a Staffie owner who thought my dog who was barking at a pigeon was actually spoiling for a fight. We know one lovely staffie but the owner was not so dumb as to think that everyone would initially be happy with her dog. So I judge, I judge by experience, if that upsets owners of bull dogs, I don't really care. They can do so much damage with those wide and very strong jaws.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 31/07/2017 21:04

You were going to rehome your dog because of comments people make?

You are sounding more and more idiotic and irresponsible by the second

DixieFlatline · 31/07/2017 21:06

You are sounding more and more idiotic and irresponsible by the second

Sounds more and more like BS to me.

kali110 · 31/07/2017 21:08

Yet its the Labrador that's most likely to bite you ( if you're a postie or delivery worker Grin) so they're bot that innocent!

I came across a muzzled dog on a lead it would cause me anxiety and I would avoid
Or it's a nervous dog being trained?Hmm

TakesTheCake · 31/07/2017 21:09

Yes, a bad parent and a bad dog owner for trusting him. Love him, by all means, but a smart dog owner would not go around trusting their dog. You have to always be wary. Not just because he is a pitbull, but because he is a DOG. That is what experts say. Why won't you believe them? Learn from Alpaca's story (I think it was alpaca). Unblock your ears!

zeezeek · 31/07/2017 21:10

Please don't give your dog away. Just carry on taking the precautions you are taking and showing him love and gentleness and most of all, ignore the nastiness - from on here and where you live.

We only tend to hear about the few cases of dogs attacking children because, for, obvious reasons they make the headlines. What we don't hear about are the millions and millions of dogs and children who are devoted to each other and where the dog never causes a problem.

I used to have dogs sleep with me when I was 10. At most times in my life I've shared a bed with a dog or two (even all three if DH isn't there). None of mine sleep with the girls though - but that tends to be because my girls are fidget arses and it disturbs the precious ones' sleep!

kali110 · 31/07/2017 21:11

You were going to rehome your dog because of comments people make?

You're going to rehome the animal?
You dont need to, you just need to be responsible!
You want to give it to ANOTHER owner, who may not treat it properly?
I've stuck up for you on this thread, but this astounds me.

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 21:13

Thanks for all the nasty comments again all taken on board

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 21:14

Sorry I just overwhelmed with the hatred that I feel hopeless

TakesTheCake · 31/07/2017 21:16

I don't see any nasty comments. Nobody has got personal. There are strong views, but this is an emotI've subject. No need to re-home him, but stop saying you trust him, stop him sleeping in the bed of a child (who trusts you to keep her safe), don't leave him unattended with any children, never let him be off-leash, and muzzle him in areas where you might encounter other people. It really is that simple.

TakesTheCake · 31/07/2017 21:18

And I did all those things except muzzling when I had my labradoodle. They are precautions for any dog, with only the muzzling being for him being a pitbull.

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 21:21

Il try keep him out of her bed il invest in a baby gate that should do the trick and save me a lot of daily bedding washing. And I do all the above out of respect for others and will continue to do so

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 21:24

I don't want to rehome my dog when there no need I just get so upset with it on a daily basis iv even had people ask if he's a fighting dog it's pretty bad dealing with this everyday it drains me it really does but il carry on taking it I suppose it's almost bullying behaviour

HooplaLoopla1 · 31/07/2017 21:24

OP has decided that anyone voicing a different opinion is wrong. No one is going to change that clearly.

OP all I can say is I genuinely hope your faith in your dog is never tested in any way. For your childrens sake or anyone else's. Your naivety and determination to be right also pose a risk tbh - you are so resolute in proving your point that you are right and everyone else is a dog hating idiot, you cannot/will not see that your explanations are discrediting your own points.

Good luck, I genuinely mean that, I honestly hope your faith never proves to be misplaced.

Eastie77 · 31/07/2017 21:25

My childminder's brother had a dog, not a pit bull. He was a friendly, docile and loved being around the children in the family. Wouldn't hurt a fly. One day without warning he jumped on CM's then 6 year old DD and attacked her. She is now a teenager and the scars are still visible.

It's a shame some of the dog owners on this thread feel stigmatised and have had unpleasant comments directed at them but speaking truthfully, I have two small DC and their safety is more important to me than your feelings. I do not like walking through our local park and having to run the gauntlet of dogs off leads who run up to my toddler and knock him over or scare him. I really don't care if your dog is gentle, harmless - please put him/her on a lead. A couple of weeks ago a woman with a barking dog noticed that my DD looked scared as she walked past and brought the dog over to us and tried to make DD pet him to "show her there's nothing to be scared off". I drew a distressed DD away and the woman shook her her and told me I need to teach her not to be afraid of dogs for her own goodHmm

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 21:26

No I agree I think I defensive over him because of his past that's all I'm not naive iv go to big measures to keep him up to standards so to say I don't mean to sound this way I just get such crap on a daily basis

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 21:27

No ones opinions are wrong I shouldn't be so defensive of him I suppose

TakesTheCake · 31/07/2017 21:28

what she said She said it better than me, and more succinctly too!

mumzilla88 · 31/07/2017 21:30

He's never jumped up on anyone in public ild be distraught if that happened but luckily he has no interest in strangers and around people he's leashed as I know ALOT of people are uncomfortable around him so I get that.
Iv always been aware that others don't like him for their own reasons but I have always accepted this
If a dog jumped up at my child ild be furious it's not acceptable
